Battles to protect lives and Battles to protect honor” - Kaien to Rukia in Ep 160. Yet another episode that was foreshadowed and called back to. About half of this one being an anime original flashback did complete justice to Ukitake revealing why he was always sick and therefore on the sidelines awaiting his true purpose here now more than ever. Mimihagi is a sentient entity that was once the right hand of the Soul King in Bleach, and it governs stagnation and stillness. It has the ability to halt the progression of anything and can heal ailments by attaching itself to those who request its aid. Orihime not being able to heal the Soul King and Yhwach not being able to see Mimihagi shows that the Soul King is beyond Reason, Concept, Space and Time. Even reversing the events couldn't fix his body and Yhwach couldn't use his Almighty against him. One last thing “We’ll see each other soon” - Ukitake to Unohana, remember that line. Iykyk Bleach ain’t going nowhere.

This also falls in line with why Yhwach lost his eyes back at the meeting with Ichibe 1000 years ago. Yhwach's almighty is limited with anything that has to do with the Soul King. He was not able to foresee that Ichibe would give up the Soul King's left arm just to close his eyes, which led to the demise of Quincies in the first war against Soul Society.

I absolutely love that both Ukitake and Unohana get these extra scenes! Ukitake having a parallel moment akin to Unohana's is really cool! Her line saying that she's satisfied and happy to be able to finally fulfil her life's purpose and here we see Ukitake fully content to achieve his life's purpose. The two types of battle part is a great callback to when Rukia was taught that during Kaien's death battle. Here we see Ukitake being honored to do this final act and protect the honor of Soul Society, and we see Shunsui throwing away honor to let Aizen out. It's really cool to see their duality as they were effectively brothers who both studied under Yamamoto, someone who was so bound to honor that he didn't question Rukia's execution, nor want to accept the help from humans on multiple occasions, but Kyouraku full on willing to accept any and all help at the cost of his honor is a great character distinction (also kind of honorable in a different way)

Yeah Ukitake did what he did for protecting SS honour and what Shunsui is doing ( Aizen team up) is for protecting the lives. They were always equal but opposite thematically. I wonder if Ukitake knew Shunsui will ask Aizen for help or if Shunsui waited for him to die so that he could do this dishonorable act without his friend knowing in his last moments. Either way a beautiful ending to such a great character.

[Tidbits & Clarifications] - Here we finally get the reveal as to why Captain Ukitake has been sick throughout the entire story (which further shows just how thought-out certain plot points in Bleach are). - If you go back to when Aizen is leaving the Soul Society he speaks directly to Ukitake saying “Since The Beginning, no one has ever stood in the heavens, neither you, nor I, not even God himself” which now makes tons of sense seeing as though Jushiro houses part of “God” within himself. (This is also why I believe Wonderweiss immediately aims for Jushiro in Karakura town, as a creation wonderweiss was offensive against those who could be deemed a threat to Aizen’s ambition, but that’s just my theory) - Ukitake mentions “East 76 Rukon District, Sakahone” Interestingly enough, in Cour 1 of the TYBW we got to see the Original Gotei 13 Captains, one of which was a devious-looking, extremely old man who was the 13th division Captain (same as Ukitake) and his name is “Saizou Sakahone”. - It may seem like a throwaway line but it’s important to remember all we learn about the hands. The Left-Hand embodies Evolution, while the Right-Hand embodies Stillness and the Mimihagi deity they worship is the Soul King right-hand. - We already see that Yhwach’s broken ability has some blind spots. Yoruichi notes that Yhwach didn’t see the shadow coming (The Right-Hand), the question now is why? And how can they use it to their advantage if that’s even possible? - Pay attention to what Yhwach says will cease to exist, he intentionally named almost every single place in Bleach lore except one “Soul Society, Precipice World, Hueco Mundo and The World of the Living”. - Sidenote: Many aren’t aware of this but both Ukitake & Shunsui are from noble families. They aren’t from the great 5 Noble families but Ukitake is low nobility and Shunsui is high nobility - Sidenote 2: The scene with the guard and Aizen is a reminder that Aizen is a transcended being who has a ridiculous amount of Spiritual pressure, most things that come into contact with him will be obliterated. - Sidenote 3: It's been some time so many forget that the "there are two types of battle" line is in reference to what Ukitake tells Rukia when she plans to help Kaien in his fight with Metastacia. The reason why Yhwach couldn't see the right arm of the Soul King coming was never explained but I think there is a very simple and logical explanation: The Soul King is just stronger than Yhwach, he also has 4 eyes, while Yhwach has only 3 eyes. Clearly anything the Soul King or his body parts do, "The Almighty" Yhwach's power can't foresee.

I think it's more than that - being the son of the Soul King and the Almighty effectively being an SK power, I think that the Almighty just completely overlooks all aspects of itself. That includes the SK and his parts, but it means that other things tied to Yhwach himself would also be a blind spot - a very important distinction for later.

In the anime, we learned that Ichibei used to have the left arm of the Soul King but Yhwach took it away (the flashback of their meeting before the 1st Blood War). Jushiro is the vessel of the Soul King's right arm, which has the power of Stillness that allows them to stop progression, most likely stopping or slowing the process of the Soul King's death, just like how it stopped the progression of Ukitake's sickness. Quick to note, not only did Aizen refused Yhwach's offer in the 1st cour, but remember he got affected by Kyoka Suigetsu's ability because his perception of time got altered as he had to retreat from Soul Society during his fight with Ichigo in the 1st Invasion. We will see if that can effect Yuha still after regaining the Almighty.

I believe all the Ukitake fights and Shikai appearances are filler and video game related, but the abilities are cannon. While we don't know what his Bankai does, his Shikai's ability is that it turns into 2 swords, just like shunsui however its abilities are that one blade absorbs energy and the other redirects it back at the target ❤ Edit; we won't see it I'm like 90% sure unless something new happens (but I don't think it will for this) so I'm really not sure if this is a spoiler or not but I didn't feel like it was since even though it maybe cannon information we don't really see it except for filler and video games 😅

Hey look, sure Ukitake is dead but this isn't the end for him 👀. It can kind of be seen as a blessing. The talk between Unohana and him hints at their faithful/doomed meeting. Both know they're about to die with the final tasks they've been given by Shunsui(that's why Shunsui says he never knew given orders would be this hard). Ukitake tells Unohana "I'll see you soon" this isn't a spoiler since the Arc is known, but that's a set up for Hell Arc as both are in Hell 👀. Now that Ukitake is freed from his sickness we'll finally see a healthy and prime Ukitake... Remember, Yama hyped him and Shunsui up as being able to surpass him 👀. Without that lung/organ disease he can finally let loose... In Hell 😈.
