Basically the story goes that an apparition known only as 'The Thing' haunts the cells of Alcatraz. It is apparently a dark ghostly figure with glowing *red* eyes. One prisoner who was placed in solitary confinement began screaming for no reason other than there was a 'demon with glowing red eyes' attacking him. He was found dead in the morning with claw marks around his neck. There were other reports of people hearing whispering sounds in middle of the night, along with clanking chains and floating blue lights and figures (inspiration for afterlife in Mob). Not to mention the 'Banjo' step from Blood of the Dead. This is a direct reference to Al Capone who played the banjo in the inmates band. Long after his death, other inmates apparently heard the tune of a 'phantom banjo' playing from his cell I remember watching one of the initial trailers for MoTD where the developers went to the island to recreate it as accurately as possible. Aside from getting the physical side of the island, i imagine they delved into the creepy urban legends that surrounded the island.

Actually hey fun fact about that brief nuke aftermath scene from Cod 4 in the iceberg, there’s actually some unused voice lines for that mission that showed that Jackson was actually supposed to survive the Nuke and the mission itself being a bit longer. You would’ve had to find radiation equipment, find a place to hide from the aftermath fog, and contact a commanding officer to I guess come and evacuate you by helicopter or something. Yeah this idea I guess was scrapped very early on cause there’s basically no leftovers from this version of the mission at all outside of those unused text lines

My favorite theory that I believe is that Harper is Woods biological kid, and knowing of his father from his mother but never knowing his father ended up sort of following in his footsteps either accidentally or on purpose. It was the worst story. You said it, poorly explained. The way you tell a story is as important as the story itself. If it makes no sense to the player then it's a bad story. Maybe it's interesting if you dig deep, but if you just play it it's not memorable at all, compared to most other CODs (especially older cods).
