What farmer, other than a psychopath, would deliberately abuse or destroy his most expensive "tools" his very livelihood depends upon and on which his wealth is officially based? Oh, it did, unfortunately, happen on rare occasion, but not enough to define it anywhere near being "normal". Indeed we know about today it because it was so unusual to be "News" even then.
