It's amazing to thin Maumbury Rings is a 4000+ year old monument that has been used on and off up to the present day and is still occasionally used for festivals - even the Coloseum in Rome is a youngster by comparison!

As a boy in the 1960s, I spent a lot of time at Maumbury with my pals, as we lived nearby. We believed the amphitheatre theory but knew nothing else. Before the bypass was built, we would sit up there and watch the traffic jams heading for Weymouth! Of course, we were also lucky to live within walking distance of Maiden Castle.

Those particular rings seem to have offered a certain type of entertainment, death and suffering. I wonder if alternative forms of popular entertainment existed, and have they just been lost to history? Much like today on KZbin there is a strong presence of macabre entertainment, and it too is quite popular, thankfully there is also more, lets say wholesome options. Were people back then that much different? I know the broader availability of education and information has had an affect on our laws, but I also know there seems to be a human curiosity with death and suffering. Enjoyed the video by the way, thanks.
@walkingthewyrd3 ай бұрын
Thank you, William. I agree with you, there has seemingly always been a human fascination with death and dying. Even today, as you say, with the rise of true crime shows on mainstream television, it doesn't seem to be going anywhere.

Don't you mean 'some' of our ancestors, others have never believed in such things! There was only one Bloody Assize, following the Monmouth Rebellion.

As regards the intentions of the neolithic builders, the lengthways orientation of the site with the axis through the entrance would be extremely relevant. I suggest, without having researched further, that the entrance faces North-East, towards the rising sun at the winter solstice or South-East towards the rising sun at the summer solstice. The axis would be common.
@walkingthewyrd3 ай бұрын
I believe the entrances are indeed North-East and South-West in alignment.
@judewarner15363 ай бұрын
After a quick Google, it turns out that my first guess, N-E to the winter solstice sunrise was correct for the main entrance. Thus the celebration of Yule is indicated. N-E entrances were common even in domestic architecture as late as the Iron Age, if memory serves?

Hi Nic Thanks for video and the information! Did Mary do it or not ? You’ve left us with a cliffhanger 😂 Did you camp there overnight to check out the dream story ? Is that your own Drone footage? If so , can I ask what Drone. Also while you were in Dorchester, did you visit the Roman Villa ? It’s in a very odd location and not very well signposted , the Town Council Offices car park ! Take care Alan
