Hi! You will just have to wait for a long dry spell, and try the hell lane bit again. Either that or use ice axe and crampons. Colmer's hill looks very handsome. Keep wyrdly walking! Bye!

lovely. I was born in Winchester and I am descended from the Saxon, Norman and Plantagenet kings. I have spend many happy hours in there since I was a little child. What a place to rest for eternity... Thanks

A marvellous, interesting and informative article. Portland is one of my sanctuaries, to where I retreat when I need to recharge. My feet have trodden many of the pathways used by you. Thank you. 😊

St Mary's Church was founded in Norman times but it was burned down by Dutch prisoners in 1653 and pretty much totally rebuilt by Queen Anne between 1706-10. It was also heavily refurbished in 1888. The priory itself butted between the church and walls and that was totally pulled down in the 12th century. With only the walls in the Roman wall made for the toilets still present.

Hi, why do the locals not like the pirates graveyard? Enjoying your video very, it popped up on my recommendations.

Purely because those that are actually buried here were local people who had no part in piracy.

One of my favourite walks with our dog. Abundance of Sky Larks, various orchids, kestrel and deer, at the appropriate time of the year. There's even a prehistoric ammunition dump! It consists of a huge mound of round even sized pebbles for sling shots!

I'm thinking that the so called 'Pirate grave' looks more likely something Masonic?. Skulls and bones, stone working tools, and was that a 🪢 or a serpent, either feature heavily in their iconography.

When the Blandford by pass was built it was cut out from the chalk. The spring following it was covered in red poppies along both sides and the whole length. The following year grass and shrubs started to move in and the highways dept planted up some trees. Within 5 years there was no trace of the chalk. I imagine it would have been the same for the hill forts.

The headstones seem to have lasted well. I am interested to know what the relationship is between Portland stone (limestone) and Portland cement. Anybody? Lighthouses with LED lights? Yes they have. The ecologist in me says great! The traditionalist weeps! Keep Wyrdly Walking! Bye!

I've just watched the video on Holloway lanes, which I enjoyed. I thought you might be interested in Jack Hargreaves videos of Dorset, they're on KZbin. He explores all over and has fascinating historical facts about them. They're late 70s and early 80s, I watched them on TV South at the time before we moved here. I even ended up delivering his post for a couple of years! I'm now going to watch a few more of your videos.

My wife and I walked Shute Lane last year. Unfortunately Hells Lane had a DCC notice closed off across the path. You've saved us a return trip! There can't be a pathway in Dorset that's not been used by smugglers! Blandford Forum has a reputation as having much to do with smugglers. At Steepleton Bends, north of Blandford, there's a lane called Smugglers lane. And, in Shillingstone a Holloway Lane, but there's not much if any evidence now of it being one. Good choice of soundtrack, very appropriate.

I love the stories of smuggling around Dorset. I hope to cover more this year. Hell Lane is certainly a tricky path to navigate! Shute's Lane makes it all worthwhile though, in my opinion. Thanks for watching.

Found your channel via Dorset Paranormal and loving working through your content. Your stories and places you go are amazing! As an Aussie I find it interesting if Lovey's nephew was transported to Australia if there are any family trees to uncover here perhaps! A distant relative of the cricketer Shane Warne even? haha very unlikely but curious to wonder!

Hello Nic. If you thought the church was crammed full, you should have been there on Imber Bus day, when thousands thronged around. The church being the only place open, meant that everyone wanted to get inside. I know. I was there!

We (my parents) had a holiday home in Highcliffe from 1956 -1985. My brother and I used to walk to and play in the old burnt out husk of Highcliffe castle until Christchurch council fenced it all off, from there down the cliff path heading towards Friars Cliff and on to the beach hut on Avon - didn't realise how lucky we were until the parents sold the holiday home and gave up the lease on the hut.

Nic what an awesome video. Just discovered your channel and when i saw this video i had to watch. I grew up in Netley and the Abbey (and the church for school harvest days) was an old haunt. There is some amazing 18th century graffiti in that section that appears fenced off. It really is a fun and serene place to visit, but also very spooky at night. Now living in Australia so this was a trip down memory lane! Thank you

This was beautifully done. ❤ The music selection was wonderful. I have visited there twice this year, and when I went down into the crypt it was flooded which made it extra spooky and atmospheric. There is a connection with Winchester Cathedral in Twelve Step addiction recovery circles, which is why I went there.

Love them views, you had some nice waves at that Winspit Quarry keep meaning to photograph them myself but it is always calm when i go there. There was a sevice about to take place there one sunday in august this year when I happened to be there although not being a church goer myself did not stay, last time I was there a bird had made its nest up in the roof arch supports. I have yet to visit the footprints, maybe in summer.
