The dark history of statins - from causing cancer to billion dollar lawsuits

The first cholesterol lowering drug to enter the market, Triparanol, was an unmitigated disaster and left a trail of human wreckage behind, even after it was pulled from the market.
It was replaced by statins, shown to cause cancer in dogs before they even reached the market, and surrounded by controversy ever since. To this day, independent researchers do not have access to the data which could reveal the truth about statins.

I was told by a doctor in Australia, that because my cholesterol levels were above a certain level, by Australian law he had to prescribe a statin to lower my cholesterol. I told him he could prescribe anything he wants, but that doesn't mean I'll take it. After viewing this, I'm happy I didn't take his advice.

When my regular GP of over 10 years retired I went looking for another. One of the GP's I 'interviewed' did not like me questioning him. He said if I would not do as he said he would not treat me and kicked me out of his surgery. Not a loss, I admit, but indicative of the arrogance and ignorance of some doctors.

I worked in a very large internal medicine clinic with 45 doctors. Looking back now, I can see where we had almost every man over 40 on a statin. It was like clock work. No discussions on ‘what are you eating’? No class on nutrition and the benefits of cholesterol. Nope, they were immediately given a statin according to their LDL level. Now, we see that folks with a higher LDL live longer!! We also saw a huge increase in metabolic syndrome!!

In the USA patients over 65 receive Medicare benefits, and part of the benefit is a yearly check-up which is often performed by a Nurse Practitioner. During that check-up the doctor or nurse will discuss the possibility of prophylactic treatments such as flu shots, or low-dose statin to lower cholesterol. In truth, these treatments are sometimes encouraged, which causes me to wonder if pharmaceutical companies have undue influence on the health care providers giving these check-ups.

Lifestyle prevention (prophylactic) approaches are much more important. Medications such as statins are evidence based and often patients find it much easier to take a medication, than actually putting small efforts into improving diets, increasing physical activity, and minimising substance use. However, the evidence base from which these recommendations are made are affected largely by the pharmaceutical companies. This can be very useful at times since they invest billions in dollars to developing new medications. But sometimes it can be a real problems since the pharma companies are trying to optimise profits, which results in imbalanced published studies. Statins is a good example of this.

Same here after a test back in 1998. I had no health insurance and couldn't afford stations, so I complied with Niacin, which made me feel like I was being attacked by fire ants. A new internist took me off the niacin about ten years later. When I learned about the link between stations and dementia, I refused ever to take stations, and I don't even bother to have my cholesterol levels tested. What would be the point? I'm 72 now, and last summer I reshingles my horse shed roof, among other maintenance activities. I think my heart is just fine.

From my own personal history of problems with myself and family members I can honestly state that most UK GP`s, surgeons and so called specialist have been an absolute disgrace and that is putting it mildly. I was told over 10 years ago that if I didn`t take statins I would end up in a wheelchair. Basically I had a blocked artery in the brain. I changed my diet to a keto lifestyle, (fats and proteins.) No breads, white salt, or sugars. No tap or bottled water (only purified through RO system) No junk foods. Meaning anything that is sold in a packet or tin. No processed meat etc etc. Now over 10 years later the blocked artery has not changed and I am in almost (lol) perfect health. DO NOT TRUST ANYBODY THAT CALLS THEMSELVES DOCTORS OR SPECIALIST. THEY ARE SIMPLY PILL PUSHERS FOR THE BIG PHARMA COMPANIES. THE WHOLE UK HEALTH SYSTEM SHOULD BE CHALLENGED AND CHANGED.

I've heard Dr. Sam Bailey exclaim aloud to question if going to a doctor is the right thing to do considering the current condition of the marketing of drugs that doctors do. Unfortunately there are times when they are the only option, like last year when I fractured a bone at my wrist, but even then I only use the one prescription out of the ones offered. Research and study is something we all do. Beside that unfortunate scenario I do the Low Carb High Fat thing to stay out and away from the medical profession.

Statins are poison. While taking them for three months, they made me ill, with three (known, obvious) side effects - extreme fatigue, erectile disfunction, rhabdomyolisis. I always ask doctors these questions. If they cannot answer then I refuse 1)What is cholesterol 2)Why don't cholesterol clog blood vessels, veins, capilaries 3)What lipids comprise all cell membranes, precursor to active Vitamin D, sex hormones, bile acid 4)What is the brain made of 5)Does red blood cells require it 6)If it's so harmful why do the liver and brain produce it Sadly most doctors cannot answer these questions

@Juha Look into what a Fractionated Lipid Panel is. Here's the thing, two scenarios can high LDL numbers and the context matters. 1) High processed food/sugar & little exercise over decades because the liver is supposed to re-absorb LDL after it's done it's job. If it's been damaged by a poor lifestyle it can't and it can float around the blood and create an arterial blockage. And 2) Dave Feldman's self termed 'lean mass hyper responder' who are low carb eaters who are physically active, this happens because LDL also transports triglycerides (fat energy) which is demanded more in a high fat diet. A fractionated panel will tell you which profile you fit, hope this helps.

Measuring LDL without measuring the oxidized vs non-oxidized fraction and then prescribing statins is simply criminal negligence or outright malice. The real medicine involves controlling blood sugar and insulin. Glycation of LDL makes it more prone to oxidation and thus accumulation in atherosclerotic plaques. But that is not even most of the story. It is reactive oxidation species (ROS) damage of the arterial walls and the ensuing inflammation aggravated by high insulin levels that is driving the disease that this toxic "medicine" is supposedly trying to treat. But statins do exactly zero to reduce this ROS damage and inflammation.

I am on Lipitor and since I started 5 years ago I am borderline diabetic, I have cataracts and cognitive issues Oddly I never had glucose issues as my sister had me check many times and it was always in the 80s, I didn't have a hard time remember things but now every day it is a problem Seems none of the doctors I see want me to go off the lipitor, I eat predominantly a vegetarian life style I went from 265 lbs to 195. My annual screenings have been normal for the past 4 years with the exception of the good cholesterol which is always low and it is my understanding the the lipitor causes that to happen.

Dear Dr. Mason, very grateful to have great person like you with wonderful excellent teaching. I sincerely wish to get your kind help in the following issues which bother me for ages without answers. (1) in your lecture, elevated LDL is not necessarily bad, and evidence shows saturated fat with elevated LDL linked to longer lifespan. Could you elaborate the special group called familial hyper cholesterolemia with highly elevated LDL and total cholesterol, aren’t they at lower risk of death than general population? (2). Ketones generated from ketogenic diet or time scheduled fasting is metabolically beneficial. On the other hand, the ketones that generated from diabetic ketoacidosis due to inter-current illnesses or those diabetics on low carbs diet or doing intermittent fasting yet taking SGLT2 inhibitors or insulin may put them at risk of death. How to explain the same ketones yet giving two sides of extreme medical conditions? Very very thankful

hi laura, a low carb diet results in a lower risk of heart disease. you want to lower intake of all seed oils and other sources of omega fatty acids which have been oxidized. clean sources of fresh food like fish are the best of fatty acids. kzbin.info/www/bejne/b5-koH6DrJWeh6M (timestamped at 8:21). for your cholesterol, high LDL is absolutely fine, but high HDL is bad, i think paul recommends checking triglyceride in blood to find HDL to triglyceride ratio, ask a good doctor who is interested in learning and not just exerting power over other people, maybe a 'functional medicine' doctor who is actively researching and learning. i have been fasting and experimenting modifying my diet for a few months now and ive learned that you should take some care in eating carbs/sugar toward the end of the day, its important to feed your gut microbes before you feed yourself, so vegetables are good in the morning (so is fat and protein) but the easy way is to take a fibre supplement (metamucil) in the morning. and the easy way to look at this is to realise that carbs and sugar are so easily absorbed by your body, you ever felt lethargic from eating something really sugary? thats from spiking your blood sugar. anyway, if your muscles havent been worked (like when youve just been sleeping) then you shouldnt eat sugar cause the liver then has to do the work and store this glucose as fat. when your muscles are tired, your muscles also do some of the work absorbing this glucose. i hope this helps. insulin can be kept low and sensitive by following a low carb low sugar diet and that lowers your risk of heart disease significantly

I am mostly following a carnivore diet, In an other video you talk about dairy which I also use. But I am wondering what you think about cheese and how that affects your gut. Somehow I've been told it is glue for the bowel but I really like it and I would love to hear what you think about it.

Very nice presentation. If your doctor advises a statin ,look into niacin (vit.b3): the original anti-plaque drug. Both safe, cheap and effective,if you do not mind the skin flushing effect( I like it ) .

Yes, I read "NIACIN: the Real Story" and learned about its use as a cholesterol lowering drugs before statins. It has other benefits too. I've been taking 50mg niacin with meals. After the first couple of doses, I stopped having a flush as long as I take it consistently. I started using it and thiamine to help with ATP production and gut function. I'll never take a statin.

11:47 "Now consider for a second what would happen if we flipped this kind of mischievous reporting data on its head.". If the graph at 11:27 showed the percentage of NOT myocardial infarction, the 2 bars would be almost to the top of the chart and would be almost identical in height. Comparing those 2 bars would result in a much lower percentage decrease.

I am not a fan of statins, but I believe Dr Mason makes leaps to causation that the literature does not support. For example, the study he cites to claim that statins cause osteoporosis was not a RCT or even observational study. It was an analysis of osteoporosis diagnoses over 1 year in Austrian patients taking different statin doses. In fact, the conclusion of the study was that statins might be associated - not causal - with osteoporosis at high doses but INVERSELY associated at low doses. Furthermore they concluded more rigorous studies were necessary to reach any firm conclusions. This study did NOT prove or even suggest that statins “cause” osteoporosis. Dr Mason unfortunately damages his credibility by misstating what the data actually show and by assigning causation where only association has been established.

There should be a law obliging to publish the results of a study, even if it doesn't confirm what it was supposed to prove. This is how I see it : BEFORE starting a study, it should be clear what it is about, how it is financed, and what the methodology is. This announcement should be published in all medical journals. If it was not published beforehand, the authors should not be allowed to publish the results. But also, if those results were NOT published, everyone would know, and could suspect they were not favorable to those who commissioned the study.

Hi Paul, My total cholesterol is 7.3 Triglyceride 1.8 HDL cholesterol 1.8 LDL cholesterol 4.7 I am 70 years old male with absolutely no health conditions none whatsoever and my doctor has put me on Rosuvastatin 20mg. Any comments about the above stats
@zhangjason2263

Look at this Rosuvastatin side effects muscle weakness in your hips, shoulders, neck, and back; trouble lifting your arms, trouble climbing or standing; confusion, memory problems; or. liver problems--upper stomach pain, tiredness, loss of appetite, dark urine, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes) If I am you, I will NOT consider any statins because the side effects purely damage your body and make your health worse. Do low carb, Or at lease do get rid of sugar and processed carbs and do IF, they are free, you will save your health and money.

Hi mate I'm not a doctor but have done a load of reading on the subject - and am 65 and on a low carb diet. My only comment would be your Triglycerides are high which to me looks like you eat a lot of carbs. Ideally you should aim to get the TG's below 1.0. And as for the statin - look at the presentation again! As a comparison my TG's are 0.8, LDL 4.5, HDL 1.4 and have been that way for years and my doctor tried to get me on statins numerous times - luckily he retired (and I told him it ain't happening anyway) and now I generally go to doctors as little as possible - definitely not for advise on diet and nutrition.

My NP wants me to take a statin for my "high cholesterol" that she says is only 16 points to high! I have refused twice so the last time I was in to see her (once every 6 month) she brought it up again, looked at me and said "you're not going to take them are you?" I once again said "nope!" She smiled and said "when do we do blood work again?" I'm thinking at some point she'll give up or fire me!!!
