Do you wanna know how I got these scars? My father was a drinker, and a fiend. And one night, he goes off crazier than usual. Mommy gets the kitchen knife to defend herself. He doesn't like that. Not. One. Bit. So, me watching, he takes the knife to her, laughing while he does it. He turns to me, and he says, "Why so serious?" He comes at me with the knife. "Why so SERIOUS?!" He sticks the blade in my mouth-"Let's put a smile on that face!" Aaaand... Why so serious? (Heath Ledger 2008)

Everything about this film works. However, no movie is perfect. If I could give one negative, the love triangle could have been more well executed, but still a very good movie. 10/10, go out and buy it and watch it.

It’s your opinion and you’re entitled to it. But objectively, it is beyond amazing. Like he said, it is a near perfect film with an amazing plot, amazing characters, amazing philosophy and views on morality. Also, the execution is flawless. The practical effects are insane, the score is exhilarating, the makeup is iconic and the minimal CGI (mainly Two-Face’s face) looks great. Edit: I forgot to mention the acting. Oldman’s great, Cain’s great, Gyllenhaal’s great, Bale’s great. But Eckhart and Ledger are just absolutely incredible.

It’s just chalks down to personal preference and things like impact on the industry, the quality of the film itself and improv, character traits, etc. But since the Joker is an amazing character in an amazing film, I’d say Heath Ledger’s Joker is the cream of the crop.

He was an amazing writer (Pulitzer Prize winner) and his movie reviews were so respected because he took the time to give serious details about what he liked. He didn't look at movies as just "entertainment" but films, and film as an art form. And that's the perspective his reviews came from. I like that you go into deep, significant analysis of the scenes, motivation of characters, etc. Of course I'm here because of The Batman and I wanted to look at older reviews of the Christian Bale trilogy.

I think the argument that there are too many coincidences that need to happen to fit Joker's plan is fair; however, I think the film does a good job at addressing this in the scene where Joker tells Harvey that he isn't a schemer and simply plays with the hands he is dealt. To me, I think that the Joker didn't need everything to happen a certain way, I think that his actions would adapt to whatever it needed to. If Batman saved Rachel instead of Dent, I think he would have adapted his actions to make that work for him. So I don't think he is planning for all these events to happen, rather he is adapting to whatever does happen.

The Joker came to the fundraiser to find Harvey Dent. He kept asking people whether they knew where he was. Then, later on, The Joker says in the interrogation sequence that when Batman jumped out the window to save Rachel, he actually thought that Batman WAS Harvey Dent. So he had no reason to hold those people hostage, since his motivation for being there was finding Harvey, who he thought, jumped out the window. So I think there was no reason for The Joker to remain at the fundraiser. That's what I understood from the movie. Harvey dents madness was already foreshadowed when he was torturing the Arkham prisoner after he saw Rachel Dawes tag on him. He also told Gordon about working with corrupt cops (the same cops who kidnapped them) and it bit him back in the ass. Moreover he didn't team up with the joker, he left it all to chance.

This being a living legend in comic book movie history, The Dark Knight is AMAZING!!! Christopher Nolan's direction is so well done. Christian Bale was once again great as Batman and every one of the supporting characters from Batman Begins were especially well written to their respective actors, especially that of Gary Oldman as Jim Gordon. Maggie Gyllenhaal was so much better than Katie Holmes as Rachel Dawes as well. Heath Ledger's Joker was not anything I was expecting from start to finish and he did not disappoint me at all. And Aaron Eckhart as Harvey Dent/Two-Face is partially the driving force of the story in the movie and he did a fantastic job (much better than Tommy Lee Jones did in Batman Forever). Christopher Nolan has done it with a superb Batman movie and ironically The Dark Knight delivers!!!

I do agree with most of the negatives but the harvey plotline was exactly what it needed to be for this film to work. they painted him out to be the most well respected DA which is exactly what the city needed. however he was easily corrupted, which played in perfectly to the jokers plan (even though he said hes not a guy with a plan). at the end of the day the joker knew he couldnt win it with a fist fight, he won it by truly breaking batman, he broke harvey, he broke the city. true infinty war style villain wins it in the end. best movie of all time.

I saw it once in the cinema. Bought it on blu ray saw it once. Now have it on 4k. Will watch it soon. Thought it was overrated both times. And I love inception. Will watch it a third time to see if I enjoy it more.

I think the Joker’s character makes up for the plot conveniences, cause it’s established that the Joker makes up a plan as he goes. For example, he didn’t plan Two Face. He could’ve died in that hospital scene. But he doesn’t care. He improvised and does the most psychotic thing he can think of.

The Joker in this film is in my top ten favorite villains in movies. He is pure evil, he's scary, you don't like him, and you want him to be beaten. This is what makes the scene in the final fight where the people don't blow each other up so good. The people, the cops, Batman, and the mob were playing Joker's game the whole time and Joker was winning. However, you can see the look of "Oh shoot" on Joker's face when there's no explosion. The people had said "No!", and Joker lost his hold over them.

Hey Sean, big fan of yours and I thought this was a great review. This movie easily an A+ for me, it still is and probably forever will be the greatest comic book movie of all time. That being said I do disagree with some of your complaints: Like your BB review, you said you didn't like the fight choreography, the fight choreography is not meant to be flashy and super choreographed where Batman takes out 200 men, yes in the comics, BVS and the Arkham games etc it is like that but this trilogy's fight scenes are supposed to be raw, gritty and realistic, in the sense if Batman actually existed in real life, he would fight like this. Then again this is just my opinion. Another thing I disagree on is your Two Face complaint, I didn't think it felt out of place structurally, Harvey was constantly conflicted throughout the movie between Batman and Gordon's sense of Justice and Jokers chaos and destruction. He just wasn't in his "final form" yet. In regards to Bruce Wayne wanting to retire and be with Rachel, I do agree it's a subversion of the comics but like you said it's fine if a movie deviates from the source material at times and the MCU have done it many times as it fits the story they want to tell.

I have to agree when you talk about the film going from full screen to wide screen. That’s always been very distracting to me and it’s very annoying. But the movies is amazing!

Every time I watch this film, and the more I consider it not only alongside Nolan’s other work, but the superhero genre in general, the more I think, “No, it’s not overrated. It’s the best comic book film of all time, up there with Spider-Man 2.” I love that the good guys are pushed to compromise their morals, to keep the streets clean. The battle is for Gotham’s soul, and the Joker knows how to push Batman and Dent (who the movie is ACTUALLY named after). The ferry scene is my favorite in the entire film, because of all the reasons you mentioned. The production values and IMAX action sequences like the opening heist and convoy are wonderful. The humor is incorporated just enough, including from the Joker. Nolan succeeds at pushing the violence to make us uncomfortable, post-9/11. The cast is stellar, but Aaron Eckart doesn’t get enough praise as Dent/Two-Face. The returning cast is wonderful, but I think Maggie Gyllenhaal is the only weak link. Seriously, though, this film belongs to Ledger, who can be terrifying, subtly funny, and totally engrossing. They probably shouldn’t establish him as an “Agent of Chaos” if they always put him in convenient situations. The more intimate fight scenes here leave quite a bit to be desired, too (see: the climactic tower fight). Gyllenhaal is by no means a bad actress, but she lacks the tough persona of Katie Holmes’s portrayal. The suit would be better if he could close his mouth or turn his head. Finally, the ending is something I’ve never bought into. Why not blame the Joker for the deaths instead of lying? Batman and Gordon only make things worse by lying. I’m not gonna say this is a perfect film, but there is no such thing. Again, so many times I’ve questioned if it’s too overrated, and for me it’s still the best superhero film and Nolan film of all time.

Fantastic movie. Heath Ledger couldn’t have portrayed the Joker any better and it’s a tragedy we won’t get to see any more performances like this from him. I still prefer BB just because I’m a sucker for origin stories but this is right next to it. Batman Begins and The Dark Knight are my two favorite Nolan movies by far
@andrewhoward44712 жыл бұрын
When Batman Begins was in production the working title was called unnamed Batman prequel inferring that it was a prequel to Batman '89. I remember always checking in on updates. So the Dark Knight is a truly original stand-alone sequel and not pre-planned after Batman Begins.
