Machiavelli and his ideas might come across as devious and manipulative and have been espoused by the most influential political figures of our past and our present. Knowing and understanding certain tactics used by politicians can be a crucial step forwards in redressing the balance within ourselves and, eventually, within our political system.

Great video! The more you read Machiavelli, observing politics and politicians, the more nuance and prescience it has.

A manger in the last company I worked for kept a copy of the Prince in her office along with 48 Rules of Power. Neither of them seemed particularly well thumbed, so I've always suspected that they were there to be seen. The person in question was a remarkably insincere and superficial individual, so I would not be surprised if that were so, but I suppose is serves as a lesson as to the influence of Machiavelli's writings .

They are very mainstream books so many superficial individuals will suggest them. They are important reads nonetheless.

Thanks for the information here. I only really knew of him because of the phrase often thrown around. I’m intrigued now though to read The Prince.

Great video, as usual, Adrian. Thank you. I often wonder how high-level youtubers like yourself or 3blue1brown create the visualisations. Unity programming? I can’t imagine the time spent on just one of these. They are gold.

Every video I watch makes me love the channel even more! I share your views on a many things... I used to call Obama Machiavellian for his “pragmatism,” people really didn’t like it. I needed this video 7-10 years ago.

And you are one of the Star seeds, the World needs. Thou shalt No Kill, but it’s ok for the Evil Spirits To Kill Each Other in their Mirrors. This will happen, when GOD opens up Portals that look like Mirrors for all the Deceivers marching in step like Nazis - , As they will be Pointing at Them selves to Shoot at the Truth. As the Meek Shall inherit Mother Earth, after this Cleansing Process of Aliens who Are marching in Human Vehicles Taking Orders To Kill Others they don’t know. As our Brother once forgave them - but this time, they must forgive themselves to be Free.

I think it was apt to chose The Borgias and Game of Thrones to backdrop this one considering that most people would consider a number of the characters in those shows "Machiavellian" to some extent. Whilst I'm no Machiavellian scholar, I have read The Prince and I did pick up a pragmatic vibe about him, but more so in the sense of this IS how the world/man is so go about political life in this manner rather than try and shape the world/man to how it OUGHT to be. And while I don't believe Machiavelli necessarily chooses "evil", I think he accepts the fact of the inevitable part that evil plays in political order. However, there is no political order without violence (and we do well to minimise violence), but it's utopian to think that we can get rid of violence entirely. I think if we look deeper into the "it's better to be feared than loved (if you can't be both)", it sort of more out a poor view of the average person and a legacy view of the ruler. Because there are bad people out there, inevitably some will want to do bad things to you, it's ok for you to do bad things to prevent these bad things from happening to you - not in any moral sense, but a pragmatic one. This comes to serve/protect your reign which to me is the primary goal of the person/party in power, not necessarily to do what is in the best interest of the people (though if they align, all good and well haha). I remember the point in The Prince, and I'm glad you brought it up, about loyalty and how ambitious people and will eventually try and usurp you so Machiavelli advises you effectively take them out and make public that this is something not to do - once again, to protect the reign of the person/party. Though, perhaps, one man's pragmatism is another man's immoral action - however, context is incredible crucial as is nuance.

We can't live without people. Feeling of I-ness is so amazing in itself, that demands recognition of one-self as the centre of the Universe, and that's why worthy of supremacy. The problem is that to this amazing consciousness of I-ness attached a body with cravings, weaknesses and unlimited desire for sensual satisfaction without which happiness is unable to be perceived. The solution of the problem isn't in the climbing to slippery and most of the times unreachable top of dominance pyramid, but in gradual detachment from the fleshy appendix of the I, achieved by fulfilment of one's duties (whatever they maybe) without anticipation of enjoyment as a result of that action.

Basically a price is a ruler and the ruler needs to follow the "rules for rulers": kzbin.info/www/bejne/qITXfWqknrdqndU I just have to say though that even though all those ideas show how to "win" the finite game of ruling by staying in the "ruler" position, it would be beneficial for all of us to play the infinite game instead (or in addition to that maybe), which is not about the person who rules but about the act of ruling and its benefits in the course of time. So I feel (from what I heard in this video since I have no prior knowledge of Machiavelli) that Machiavelli's prince seems more of a strategic book rather than a philosophical one.

He was more of a pragmatist, a realist who suggested a very practical system of government as a temporary instruction manual rather than how the world should be as most people believe. He himself didnt believe what he wrote in his infamous book The Prince. He was writing to a Prince how he could most effectively maintain rule and unify the disjointed Italy at the time. The book was simply about how the world works, and what method in history worked, to the Prince. His discourse of Livy is the REAL viewpoint of his on how the world SHOULD be, The Prince is how the world IS and what historically worked and didn't work. People conflate this and think The Prince establishes his political outlook. Outside of Nietzsche, he was probably the most misunderstood and wrongfully demonized philosopher out of misunderstanding. It doesn't help a term relating to unscrupulous is derived from him.

People are resistant to change. When a prince aquires power whether politically or militarily he should change only that which is necessary for her to maintain his power and more importantly ORDER!🤔😀😁
