I saw Lester Holt in the picture and thought I was going to hear something different. You showed a picture of Dion instead of Tommy Allsup. Buddy's hits were on Coral Records and Brunswick. Decca might have been the major owner of these companies but only one album has ever appeared on Decca which had the original version of That'll Be The Day and old cover songs. As for the glockenspiel, it belonged to Norman Petty's wife and Buddy liked the sound so she played it on Every Day, the flip side of Peggy Sue. As for dark secrets, there were none really. Buddy became independent when Petty wouldn't pay royalties he owed Buddy. A lawsuit was pending when Buddy was killed. Buddy's widow carried on with the lawsuit but Petty's name was on all the Clovis recordings so he was free to release any records made in his studio. Love Is Strange was one of the tapes Petty reworked by adding strings and extending the 2 verses to 4 plus adding a bridge . It fits very well with Buddy's guitar. Maria might have had a falling out with Buddy's family but I do know she left them and Norman Petty out of The Buddy Holly Story. Paul Mccartney's Real Buddy Holly Story ,a documentary, is much better as Jerry Allison and the other original Crickets are in the film. So is Buddy's family. Maria is mentioned once. As for the fortune teller...well I have never heard or read that before. But it's possible I guess. ❤❤❤

@@familydogg1234 I've heard that before..Dion was careful with his money so he opted out of paying the 60 bucks for a seat on the plane.. Buddy approached him first. There wasn't any coin toss. And I've also heard that it wasn't true because Buddy chartered the plane for him, Waylon, and Tommy but Ritchie Valens and The Big Bopper who was sick asked to fly instead.. Ritchie lost the coin toss. The Big Bopper just asked Waylon to swap places with him. There was only one coin toss..

His dark side consists of arguing with his brothers (much like everyone ever - that had brothers) and occasionally being slightly naughty at school (much like almost everyone who ever went to school). He also had a say in his own career and did all the hard work himself. Had the link for this video said “Buddy Holly was exactly as great as you always thought he was” I would’ve still clicked. He was someone very special and it hurts to think what more he could’ve achieved. RIP

@@garyfaught3769 Yeah, Roy Orbison died from a massive heart attack while he was flying radio controlled aircraft. after having a triple bypass heart surgery, and along with George Harrison just forming the The Traveling Wilbury's. on December 6th 1988. he was one of the greatest singers of all time and he is definitely missed. (update); just a few months ago Joe Walsh along with James Burton. have mentoring Roy Orbison's grandson, Roy Orbison III. and he made his first stage appearance at just six years old and he was fantastic. !!very impressive indeed!! we could have a new Roy Orbison in the future how about that?

I was riding on a school bus the morning after Buddy Holly's plane crashed. On hearing the news on the radio, I was crushed. I'd become a fan of Buddy. Later in the summer of 1999, I had a business trip to Minneapolis, MN. My drive took me past the spot where Buddy's plane crashed. It was a sobering moment.

J.I. Allison, the Crickets' drummer, was Buddy's friend in Lubbock. He helped my brother get his first record album contract. He was very good to our family, and always spoke well of his long-dead friend, Buddy Holly. I visited Buddy's grave in Lubbock once, and the Fender guitar was in fact carved on it. J.I.'s first wife was the actual Peggy Sue.

Mick Jagger saw Buddy Holly in concert as a kid. Buddy, Elvis, Little Richard, Chuck Berry, Carl Perkins...those are the forces that culminated in the British invasion. Additionally, The Stones' sax player, Bobby Keys, knew Buddy from around Lubbock as a kid, and played on "Return to Sender" for Elvis. As great as Buddy was, and he most certainly was, but to a lot of people, they forget that Valens and Richardson were part of that tragedy. The film La Bamba made people aware for aware, but it's far enough removed from the public collective memory, a lot of people have don't even know who they are. Very sad. And Peterson...forget about it. No one bud us music geeks know who he was.

Well, he was thrown violently out of a crashed airplane, so I don't imagine he had them on when his body was discovered.

Buddy's glasses were lost in the crash. A few months later as spring approached, the farmer was out preparing his field for planting. Since the snow had melted, he found the glasses and turned over to the Sheriffs office. They were placed in a manilla envelope marked 'Charles Hardin Holly'. There they stayed for a little over 20 years until a new sheriff was elected. That sheriff decided he was going to clean out the courthouse. In a file cabinet, in the basement he found the aforementioned manilla envelope. He gave the glasses to Buddy's parents. Then the widowed sued and won.

I always heard the same . Buddy's glasses were found by the farmer. He turned them in to the Police but it was years before they were turned over to the family. In a way,I think the family should have got them but Maria donating them to the museum was probably the right thing to do. That's better that what Yoko did with John's glasses She sold them which outraged Paul Mccartney..I heard later that Paul had got them and placed them in a museum but it was probably just a rumor.

I was 15 when Buddy Holly died. He was my idol, more so than Elvis. I was in a singing duo in Brooklyn, NY called the Taylor Kids, with my partner Carl Pace. We were Everly Brothers wannabes. We had a manager called Jay Fishman. He phoned me and said, "Did you hear he news, Buddy Holly died?" I told him I was very sad and cried about it. He came back with this unbelievable statement, "Well, look at it this way, there's more room at the top now." We fired him.

Buddy was immensely talented. Not to knock Elvis, as he was GREAT, but he never wrote one song. Never produced one either. Buddy did it all. Also, he was a MASTER guitar player, in the same class as Hendrix, Clapton, and Page for his time. The guitar, for Elvis, was mostly just a Prop. I was too young when he died and only learned about him after years and years. Every year, he is honored in England as he has his very own "Hollyday," where his music is played exclusively. Paul McCartney has attended this event, and credits naming "The Beatles" after the success of "The Crickets", both insects. Also, The Hollies were named after Buddy. Both are honors that Elvis cannot claim. His Legend will live FOREVER.😀😀😀😀

It’s been said that the very few people who’ve listened to The Velvet Underground formed their own bands. Well, some talented people who’ve listened to Buddy Holly formed the GREATEST rock acts of all time, like Bob Dylan, The Beatles and The Rolling Stones to name a few (the first Beatles recording, still in their teens as The Quarrymen, was a rendition of ‘That’ll Be The Day’) . The Crickets were the blueprint for every subsequent rock band to this day, Buddy Holly was the first true complete artist in rock history and ‘The "Chirping" Crickets’ was the best rock album of the 1950s.

My Son is an Awesome musician. His Dad was a Music teacher. I sing & played some piano a long time ago. My brother played guitar & sang. Both My Dad & My Husbands Dad were self taught musicians. So I guess that makes him a third generation musician. He was doing really well with it too but he got married , adopted his wife’s little girl. Two years later they had a baby boy. He was offered a very lucrative job as a President of a college. He says he rarely picks up a guitar. It makes me sad. We used to have sing alongside all the time. Wow!!! I guess the thing that surprises me about Buddy was the mysticism. I’m not real surprised , I just never thought about it I’ve also been interested in things unseen myself. Since I was a child I’ve had dreams at times that later happened. It wasn’t ever anything I sought out or had any control over so I could never predict anything by it. But,,,, probably the first one I ever had ,,, we lived right by the rail road tracks. The depot was just down the street. Back in those days passenger trains came through there at high rates of speed. So I woke up early one morning just crying my eyes out. I told Mama that I’d dreamed the train ran over an old man. And his eyes were hanging out. It was so real and i can still see it. A little bit later an old man up the street who worked graveyard shift was coming home from work, fell asleep & ran right out in front of the train. My older brothers ran over there with Daddy. And one of the younger boys, a real tough guy, ran to Mom flipping out because he’d seen the man & his eyeballs were hanging out. CRAZY!!! Granny said I had the gift. Moma said it was coincidence. She didn’t believe people should delve into such things.

Buddy Holly lived a straight-edge lifestyle during an era when journalists did not investigate the lifestyles of performers. Performers had a lot of privacy compared to the mess that started in 1974 after Clare Boothe Luce launched People Weekly magazine. For example, during Buddy’s lifetime and for many years after the plane crash, people who never met him were clueless about his interest in paranormal topics.

Buddy Holly was alive then and possibly knew about the criminal libel trial that brought down all the Hollywood Research magazines. If Buddy was in New York City in January 1958, as he often was, he could have seen the New York Daily News cover photo of the crime scene with the dead body of Frances Everitt Rushmore. She was murdered by her psychopathic husband who had written a lot of Confidential stories before the criminal trial had started. He had been editor-in-chief of Confidential. [new paragraph] New Yorkers, possibly including Buddy Holly, learned from the Daily News that Frances Rushmore was the mother of two young daughters. Her gossipy, psychopathic husband shot her inside a taxicab very close to a police station on Manhattan’s East 104th Street. That ruined the credibility of everything Confidential and Hush-Hush had published. They were published by the same company, Hollywood Research, Incorporated. [new paragraph] Hedda Hopper was a notorious liar and unreliable journalist for many years, culminating in her ironically titled 1963 book, The Whole Truth and Nothing But. The book’s assertions included one that movie actor Michael Wilding was a homosexual. Wilding sued Hopper for libel and won. This caused many newspaper publishers to drop her syndicated column. Of the sources mentioned by Robert Telarket - mathematician? - those that could have smeared Buddy Holly during his lifetime, but didn’t, only Louella Parsons’ syndicated column had some items that were believable. Because these KZbin comments are supposed to focus on Buddy Holly, the most important issue about 1950s journalism is that he never did anything that could have brought down his reputation anyway. Buddy was well-behaved offstage. If he smoked cigarettes, so what? Millions of people smoked them in 1959, the last phase of his life. If your point is that everyone believed everything they heard and read back then, you are wrong. Smokers did not believe published reports of the dangers of smoking.

❤ Buddy wasn’t a master guitarist as someone wrote here. He wrote very good pop rock tunes. Some were among the best ever published. Buddy was terrific at being an arranger, and was innovative with sounds long before anyone else in the rock world. Buddy also had a great talent for taking a melody and creating a beautiful guitar solo which was influenced by the melody but was a Variation on it. Before that you often heard a guitarist or piano player simply play the song’s melody, or something very similar to it, during the solo section if there was one. His song structure influenced Lennon and McCartney more than anyone else. And since they were emulated by editions from the mid60s onward we can say that all of pop or pop rock music that would also include southern rock etc., has its roots in buddies ideas. That by the way it’s not an exaggeration that’s not hyperbole it’s the truth.

My Dad was the biggest Buddy Holly fan and in the Summer of '74 packed his 7 kids into our big Pontiac Safari wagon and drove from our home town of Easton PA to Clear Lake, Iowa so we could see where "The Music Died." It was a great family vacation. We headed down to Lubbock, then to Dallas where we visited Dealey Plaza, then down to the bayous of Louisiana to visit our cousins. If I had a dollar for every time he reminded us kids that Buddy inspired the Beatles, and they even coined their name to mimic The Crickets. Mom and Dad were born in 1940, in the latter half of the so-called "Silent Generation" and are considered the first generation of teenagers to be courted by the music industry and advertisers. They were America's first "youth" culture. Dad's love of rock music grew and Mom says he went berserk the first time hearing The Kinks and The Rolling Stones. In addition to being the world's greatest Dad, he spoon-fed his kids a steady diet of pop and rock music and by the time I was a toddler he was deep into Prog-Rock and my childhood was spent surrounded by music ranging from Bo Diddley and Muddy Waters up to the contemporary sounds of the 1970s.

Interesting! He was breaking free from the record companies and then he died. This may have been the first fime a musician was sacrificed but given he wasn't the last; remember there is the 27 club. The same goes for Jimi Hendrix who was going to leave his manager and whose autopsy showed so much wine in his lungs the coroner said he had to have drowned in a pool of wine and Janis Joplin dealer said the "government" came to him and told him that if he didnt sell her this packet of heroin hed spend the rest of his life in jail. Too many musicians have died mysteriously.

When I had the box set entitled, The Complete Buddy Holly with 6 LPs in the liner notes it mentioned he formed his band while in Junior High. He was permitted to play at school assemblies even then he was gaining popularity. While in Junior high at a school assembly his band decided to play and sing 🎤,” To Old To Cut The Mustard.” The song was dedicated to the oldest teacher at that school. If anyone was able to do something like that it was Buddy Holly and his band. If he did something like that he also had a humorous side to him. That means he was human just like everyone else because everyone one the planet 🌎 takes risks does things that are outrageous. Buddy Holly wasn’t any different he was human like everyone else.

My oldest sister-in-law was present for that final concert at the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake. Tour schedules seem to have an iron grip on artists, with no allowance for bad weather or break downs. This is just wrong, as it is inhumane. So many have perished from accidents or become addicted to drugs because of the relentless pressure and little time for rest.

I was at the 2009 "50 Winters Later" Dance Party on Feb. 2nd, 2009 at the Surf Ballroom. It was quite a party. Went to the crash site the following day. It was a sad and somber occasion. Buddy will not be forgotten any time soon, not should he be.

elton john had perfect eyesight as a kid, but wanted to imitate buddy, so he wore glasses. a year later he couldn't see without them. hollies and beatles were named after buddy and crickets. elvis costello modeled his look after buddy. in behind the music around 1998 it was stated that over 700 musical performers recorded his songs. the biopic with gary busey was flawed but still good, and on, and on.........

One things that wasn't mentioned is that Buddy Holly was ahead of his time in his music. He experimented with new sounds because he was a music innovator. When the Crickets recorded the song Everyday Norman Petty's wife sat in on the session playing the Celesta. It's a keyboard that sounds like a glockenspiel giving that song a unique sound. When him and the Crickets had their falling out he decided to merge Rock and Roll with symphonic music. Perhaps ELO was influenced by this by merging the symphonic sound with Rock Music. The only difference is that synthesizers weren't around in Buddy Holly's day but the concept is the same. He changed the sound of music and just about every Rock performers were influenced by him. Being a Rock and Roll performer since he wore glasses he made the statement that it was Ok to wear glasses.

Been a Buddy Holly fan since the days of 78 rpm records, and I truly believe that if Buddy hadn’t been killed 8n the plane crash he would have been bigger than Elvis Presley! Owing to the fantastic songs he wrote. Perhaps he would have been blown away in 1964 because he wasn’t from Liverpool when Merseybeat hit USA, but I like to think that my first musical hero would have continued to write and perform these great songs!

the fact that he was into mysticism, surprise me a little, made me think of the Beatles when they went to India and George Harrison’s devotion to the belief system. In fact i always thought when that the song “Listen To Me” sorta foreshadows George Harrison’s Indian style songs like “Love You Too” and “Within You, Without You”. The style of “Listen To Me” is very India-based to my ears. Makes me think of that Eastern-Mysticism that influenced George so much.

What surprised me the most is that at 4.02 instead of Ritchie Valens, this video shows Dion (Di Mucci) of Dion & The Belmonts; he was the 4th headliner of the Winter Dance Party. And the narrator seems to like the word "iconic" a lot without understanding that it applies only to images and not to songs, by definition: it comes from the Greek "eikon" (image), as in the word "iconoclast" (destroyer of sacred/religious images). James Dean was "iconic", not a song like American Pie. The darkest secret is why this guy narrated this since he seems to know very little about anything... 🙄

I love so many of Buddy's songs, but you may laugh here, when I tell you my all time favourite, Buddy didn't write it, it's an old standard probably from the 40's. titled "Wait Till The Sun Shines Nellie" there is something about this song, not well known by him, but his version grabs me every time I listen to it. It was sung by many different singers over the years. Check it out if you haven't heard it and if you are a fan of Buddy's, i think you might like it.

I've heard Buddy was the pioneer of using two guitars, bass, and drums. My Buddy faves are True Love Ways and It Doesn't Matter Anymore. It's well-known Buddy influenced the Beatles but IMHO Ritchie had at least a little influence on the Beatles. The opening riffs of Labamba and Twist and Shout are very similar, just Twist and Shout is slower.
