A little honesty.
I’ve always had difficulty with my addiction to collecting Physical Media (Blu rays / 4k etc). I’ve reigned it in. But recently, old habits are creeping back.
Thanks to AJ ‪@ajsmovieplace‬ and my buddy Glenn for adding some of their experience on this subject that can… at times be difficult to discuss.
If you have had any struggles in the past, let's share below. Its good to talk...

Thanks for your message Daniel. I’m glad you’re finding it relatable. I worry sometimes about posting topics like this but at the same time, I’m glad I post topics like this. It helps me and I hope it helps others with their thought processes a little. I’m happy you’ve found value in this video. There’s more to come that perhaps delve into the uncomfortable things… but I’ll also be doing the videos for the more fun stuff too… there’s still joy to be found in our hobbies, it’s just finding that balance.

Back in the 80s my father would often bring home vhs tapes of our favourite movies, he also had his own small collection of now rare uncut tape before certs existed, which he later sadly all sold off cheap to a mate to make a few quid when he was skint, he sadly passed away about 20 years ago now, so I guess I associate collecting with those times, in late 80s early 90s i counted I have around 250 vhs tapes, which I later sold off as I got married and they were well old and worthless only to start again with dvds which I later sold off again, the trouble was I was always skint as I was my wifes carer, now after devorcing and having more money on my hands and the quality of the movies i loved is getting better and better im back at it again, I have to pop by my local CEX any time im near, i only watch the movies once then just shelve them for years, I recently brought the Bruce Lee at Golden harvest for over £200 from ebay got it felt all excited watched the movies now back on the shelf, there is a high i get from just owning a movie and watching it getting lost in it briefly having my fix and remebering watching them with my father.

I am going through the same thing. Collecting on your own can be fine, but adding social media, KZbin, and treating sales like it's the Super Bowl causes a chaotic dilemma. I have hundreds of discs I have not watched, yet I see over $700.00 of box sets I want. Or I can just go to the thrift shop and buy a box of DVDs 3 for a dollar. As I declutter I still need to buy hundreds of tarifold sleeves. I could just turn off the computer and watch my movies.

@@retrofun41 it’s a funny thing. As much as I pull back I know that I soon get drawn back in. Constantly have to try and keep myself in check. Today I’m in Gibraltar doing the tourist thing. Already found myself wandering into shops that advertise DVDs to see what they have. It’s a learned behaviour that just isn’t easy to escape.

This video really hit home for me...I can totally relate to much of what you described and I am very aware of the problem I have. It's now impossible for me to identify what part of this is a hobby for me with things I actually want to things I just think I want based on my mood, often influenced by seeing someone else unboxing the item and seemingly making them happy/excited. I find myself buying stuff and returning it or just simply selling it on at a loss...ridiculous really.

I was a little worried about posting this video. To me, it just felt completely different from my other videos (think that’s why I went with a more basic thumbnail). But… I did want to touch on what’s ’in my head’ and keep my videos pretty honest. It is difficult when your hobby is also your addiction. Personally. I’ve started to use wish lists a lot. Try my hardest to wait things out. See how I feel after a couple of weeks or so… difficult when it comes to FOMO on those limited editions. Ive pretty much stopped watching many unboxing videos. It’s just temptation all the time (it’s hard enough on social media groups with numerous posts about the same items). It’s good to talk about your thoughts, I’ve find vocalising things for these videos has helped me personally.

@@PhillwithadoubleL appreciate you sharing your thoughts and definitely reassuring for me knowing there are many others who think the same way! I get a lot of comfort from having a collection and my pick ups are quite focused on things I like and not just everything for the sake of it. So it could be worse for sure! I like collecting and knowing I own the movies, many provide a nostalgic feeling for which I never tire of. It also means I feel part of a community who also love physical media and have a passion for a hobby that on the most part…is enjoyable ;-)

@@PhillwithadoubleL I think that if we (as in people in the UK) had gigantic houses with loads of space (as seems more common with US KZbinrs) then I think we'd just carry on regardless. As someone who has filled up multiple disc wallets with DVDs and have stacks of unopened 4Ks and Blus I know I buy things I don't necessarily need. I have over 1K titles I own and haven't seen! I have switched to only buying things I've seen before or only buying vanilla titles when they're discounted but I do get carried away with that. I was the same with CDs 20 years ago but I seem to have switched focus to films. The lack of space is more of a problem for me than a monetary one but I am aware that my purchasing is definitely more of a sign of addiction than me actually wanting these things.

For me recently it’s been more about the space. I’ve found that in having so much, my mind became as cluttered as my shelves. I think all.of us have been there. But once you take notice of it you can change it more easily. You can always remove something from the checkout cart. But id say that when you do make those impuose orders, try to take time to enjoy what you bought. Let yourself feel better cause thats what you needed in the first place. But being self aware is important.

💯 absolutely. I’ll be taking the time to watch the things I picked up for sure. They weren’t ‘bad’ pick ups really. Just sparked of TMNT thought process of ‘why now’ ‘what happened to make me NEED these now’ I’ve started to use the wish lists more. Over time, some things will just get removed. Others eventually ordered. Using it to be more thoughtful about what I’m ordering and why rather than the normal impulse of just ordering. I think more struggle with these sort of issues than they care to admit. Think I started to pull back when I found that I just lost the excitement with what was arriving because… it was just “normal”.

I'm on the other end of the spectrum, as in, I'm a minimalist. It's my belief the more stuff you own, the more it owns you and the less free you are. This is because everything IMO comes with a maintenance fee (time, money, space and/or effort). Everything you add to your life has it own unique maintenance fee, but regardless whatever it is, it will always result in your losing some freedom one way or another. Also, people often don't realise the thought of having the said product is way more powerful than actually owning it. This is because your imagination is the best sales man you'll ever meet because it knows the exact emotions and what-if scenarios to create to make you desire the product even more. However, when you actually get the product, it can often be underwhelming because it simply couldn't compete with what your imagination created of you using the product. Anyway, good to hear you've recognised you have a problem and doing something about it... I see other people here on KZbin who are in similar situation as you yet they're so lost in the moment of wanting the next big thing they don't even realise they may have a problem themselves.

Honestly, I’ve been watching some KZbinrs based around minimalism. I think it’s partially what’s helped me take a better look at things as I’ve been on this journey. While I’ll likely always have a collection I now grasp that I don’t need it all… or at least don’t need to keep it all. Gaining some space back in my office helped me along the journey. As my space cleared… so did my head. It’s given me a certain amount of clarity. It’s going to be a long process to change years of habits but… I’m doing better at it.

It might be covering old ground or unrelatable to some, but it's important to make people aware of these impulses, habits/compulsions/addictions as it can help break the cycle. I have fallen into the trap many times and managed to reign it in, to only repeat the same irrational behaviour. We justify these purchases whatever they be to ourselves knowing we are not fooling ourselves leading to extra finnacial burden and feelings of selfishness and guilt. Good on you for being honest with yourself and hopefully helping others face their reasons for overspending.

Setting rules/goals can help. For instance, only procure what you will watch again with enjoyment each year, possibly two years and work out how many you could watch in this period, that is your limit. If unsure, use streaming or go to the cinema to vet movies before buying them physically. When you reach your limit and you want to add a film, then remove a film of lesser watch value. You could also limit your storage to your reflect the number of films you can watch in a period, so nothing can be added unless something is removed...

At least I had a phase ”gotta get my 2000 rated movies milestone done while I’m at it.” Then there’s the whole ”oh this and this one is a high rated movie, gotta get and see those, old/new movies” before you know it you have accumulated a list of 100 movies/shows to the imdb watchlist So, in a imaginary world where imdb did not exist.. would it mean less hoarding?

I’m not sure it would mean less hoarding. IMDb list is a way to go for some. I’ve been drawn into collecting for directors before now. Trying to complete a directors full catalogue. There are a couple of directors I’ve completed and a couple more that I was approaching completion on. Then realised… I was collecting (some) movies that I just wasn’t that interested in. I’ve seen others collect for certain actors too. Although, I do think that IMDb perhaps does encourage that need to fill your shelves with the top ‘must haves’ that they list.

It's ultimately about being disciplined . Yes, we can all buy things when our mood is low, like you say, go for a walk, do something else . The hobby is supposed to be fun, but if it's becoming an addiction, then it's time to pause and reflect. I didn't get caught up in the Abyss 4k pre-order nonense, i still haven't brought it because i knew it would come back in stock. Most of this stuff can always be found on the second-hand market anyway , and patience does help . Do you need everything always on day one of the release ? If your collection is becoming overwhelming, then it's time to sort and sell that can be a good way of tackling it and helps clears the mind and fill the pockets.Another warning sign is getting into debt this is a big red flag. Collecting should not be impacting living costs, budget , discipline, and patience are the best advice i follow but help is out there for those struggling. Great vlog

I have been disciplined recently. This was something different. Something that pushed that discipline to one side. When I was younger I did get into debt from the collecting, quite badly. That’s all behind me now. But, the old habits are still there. I’m sure we all still buy stuff we don’t really ‘need’ anyway. Just something a little different hits when you get into the psychology of the whole thing.

I don’t know if I picked up a bit of a collecting habit from my dad. He’s similar with music. Vinyl and CDs take up a large amount of space in his house. Although they’re restricted to just the one room. Not sure he’s touched many of the physical music stuff for a while. He ripped loads onto hard drives so doesn’t really have that need for the physical beyond having that collection to look through… and touch. Sometimes the physical feel of a product is quite comforting / satisfying

On Point 💯 That's Exactly how many of us feels like about our Collection and yes it can be a bad Addicted Hobby but Remember this you don't have to keep up with others Special from those Big KZbinrs of the Physical Media Community they just keeps buying things for the nice packaging only and never watch the damn Movie so what's the point of having those anyway if you never watch it 🤔 It should be always about the Movie you love and not how many Physical Copys you have. 1. Buy less. 2. Buy Movies you really love and when you know you gonna watch it more then 1 time. 3. Don't have the fear of missing out things because you can't have everything. 4. Don't have the fear about being a outsider of this Community just because you can keep up with others 5. You don't really need the 4K to show that you love Movies. 6. Be happy about the things you have and enjoy it.

I find the following rules help curb me collecting 4K UHD's i dont need: 1) Is the film a 7/10 for me 2) Is it a film i want to repeat watch - If "No" to the previous then i dont buy it.

Yup, I certainly need to pull back the blind buys. Or make sure I have the time to watch and then sell straight away if it isn’t to my tastes. I have been pretty restrained recently. I’ve even held back on things I actually feel I want, just to allow that time to see how much I really want it. For example, I’ve still not picked up True Lies or Aliens 4k 😱 or The Crow. At the moment I’m considering what time I have to repeat view these. I wouldn’t get to them straight away so trying not to pick them up until I’m actually ready.

@@PhillwithadoubleL Unless something is a sellout type item .. never rush to buy, it will only get cheaper as it gets older. Buying a 4K film just to watch and see if you like it seems a costly / risky strategy, its expensive and even if you resale you have eBay fee's, why not rent it or stream service it, only buy what you know you 100% love the movie.

I guess it’s about taking stock of what you have and enjoying what you have first. Find a way back to enjoying the purest love of film and ease off the collecting for a while, there will always be more releases. Those quick compulsive buys only lead to quick and short lifts of endorphin levels, which ultimately mean you didn’t really need the item in the first place if it’s just going to sit on your shelf! Watch what you have and sell what you don’t really care about. But I feel you, I’m the same with Books and Lego also but I’ve learned to use my hobbies to buy what I consider compulsive purchases, providing there will be some value to sell later so it still scratches that itch, but I set myself a budget.

The process of easing off is in play, as is clearing out some of the items I’ve amassed. Just the occasional slip but thankfully I’m getting quicker at realising what I’m doing. I think we all seem to do this in some way. It’s strange looking back through a collection and realising that you didn’t need to ‘keep’ a large portion.

@@PhillwithadoubleL I think I mentioned before that I jumped on those latest Cameron 4K films, started with Abyss then thought well now I need Aliens and True Lies 😂 think I’ve watched about half an hour of aliens and it’s back in the cupboard! It’s that compulsive collector habit that kicks in. Nothing wrong with having a collection like yours providing you’re enjoying them, I got rid of all my DVDs years ago… apart from my favourites! @@Officiallywilf currently sorting through my collection and realising I didn’t ‘enjoy’ all of the movies I had collected. It was more the compulsion to keep them, like I was trying to prove myself as a collector / movie fan. I'm a selective collector, I buy films I love and rewatch. A lot of which are nostalgic to me, personally. I don't buy into hype, or if it's limited edition, or released by a certain label. That's not what my collection is about. Everyone collects for different reasons. I don't over do it, but I have spent a lot in the last six months.

I’m trying to get back to your way of collecting. Doing it for the films I love. My habit sucked me into a pattern of anything and everything, even if they weren’t getting watched. I want to be at a point of enjoying my collection rather than amassing for the sake of collecting

@@PhillwithadoubleL I’m a cinephile first and foremost. Don’t get me wrong I’d happily pre order a limited edition over a standard edition, if the choice is there. But I’m picky about which films I purchase in general. I like to look at my bookcase and see a reflection of my tastes. Collecting every Second Sight limited edition, or every Criterion, or every Arrow Video etc has no value or meaning to me. It’s not like I’ve run out of films I actually do want to own, buying anything and everything seems pointless. Collecting physical media is still an addiction for sure, I just know what I like. And if I’m interested in something I haven’t seen before, I tend to watch by other means first, whether it’s renting or streaming before I buy.

@@PhillwithadoubleL Looking at my ebay stats, I've sold 112 items in the past 90 days and the only thing that I regretted parting with was my Middle Earth boxset. Not necessarily for the films but for the features, (I think I left a comment about this on one of your previous videos) but that regret lasted maybe an hour? If that. I'm more than happy with the theatrical cuts of the LOTR films and genuinely glad to have those ghastly Hobbit films out of my collection 😅🤣. In all seriousness, most of the stuff I've culled I have watched. I find putting things to the side for a week or two after viewing helps with the cull. If it's not something that I have no inclination to revist, it goes.

@@PhillwithadoubleL Indeed they were but realistically, I can't imagine watching them again or the extended cuts. It's hard enough fitting a 90 minute film in let alone 3 - 4 hours.
