I agree- I can’t tell you the way I feel because the way I feel is oh so new to me - is my favorite line in that song. Liam really is a good writer but constant gaslighting by his brother for decades makes him believe he’s not. Bold is an epic song. So vulnerable and real. Gaslighting is what abusive husbands do to wives, Noel did it to his brother. I think Liam understood this but decided to put up with it as a trade off for Noel doing all the business end of stuff. But every now and again Noel controlling Liam like the guest list situation would finally set Liam off. I mean imagine putting your friends on the guest list only to find out Noel took them off. That’s like dictator behavior over everyone in the band. Sociopath.

A brilliant video, James and a maybe a bit of restorative justice too. I really liked the bit at the end where you acknowledge that we’re all a mix of qualities and no one’s conscience is quite clear. Two things struck me, thinking it over. One was the remark you quoted near the beginning about perceived differences between Liverpool and Manchester band cultures. It’s definitely the case I think that particular places, cities say, foreground certain values at the expense of others. Some places will feel to a majority of people kinder, or more dangerous, or more fun-loving or creative than others. This has a strong bearing on how we all learn to present ourselves. On top of that there are institutions and times. It might be very important to be ‘hard’ in a cell block, but not in a refuge for victims of domestic violence. And the lad culture of the 90s has now in many peoples’ minds started to go the way of flared jeans and flat caps. So in some cultures it might be easier than in others to get away with being a bit ruthless. The second thing is hinted at in your mentions of Alan McGee and that’s career strategy. People who want fame need to make a strong impact and for that you need a very well-defined and simple image. I wonder if at some point early on Noel might have been advised to simplify the story you tell here. Of course now that Oasis is probably over and has achieved global fame, it’s possible to let some of the complexities back in. Led Zeppelin didn’t initially give credit to Willie Dixon, but later they did. Still, it’s a fascinating topic and you open it all up with you usual depth and flair. Thank you.

They lost a lot of their punky sound when Tony was sacked. I preferred him on drums. I’ve read his book and it’s great. He didn’t trash Noel or anything like that. Which he could quite easily have done. Shows what a good bloke he is. The truth is a very good and apt title for his book as well.

Without Noel, Tony McCarrol would never be heard of and would never have played on an iconic album like 'Definitely Maybe'. Is Noel supposed to apologise to Tony for his inability to hold a steady beat as a drummer and lack creativity and timing? If he was a credible talented drummer he wouldn't have been sacked in the first place.

Judging by stories like "Rolexes to the band, Rolls-Royce to Noel" it really feels like McGee has convinced Noel that he is Oasis by himself, even though they already had the sound - which they've lost when the original members left. Liam's contribution is also utterly underrated. Noel has created this image that he's a genius songwriter, but without his brother's delivery I don't think any of his songs would have been noticed. In the meantime whatever Liam sings, the tune sounds like Oasis, whether it's written by Death in Vegas or even Bob Marley. I'm also certain that Liam could have become a great songwriter with some encouragement in the early 90s and the band could have become a relatively successful indie band. On the other hand, I don't see Noel's career ever taking off without the sound, attitude and voice of Oasis.

To be honest I think that Noel always had this hunger of becoming a rockstar no matter what, and without that oasis would've never reached that level of fame and success. I think he was an incredible strategist. He knew that it was not going to be easy, but he also knew how to play his cards and did it great (althought that consisted on wearing masks and blend in with all kind of people , use'em and get away with it). I think that somehow , all that he did was necesary and perfect , and if you think it wasn't , Oasis music is the result of that and it speaks for itself

If every song was as original and iconic as Live Forever, Bring It On Down, Wonderwall and Champagne Supernova, they'd probably be the best band of the nineties. Part of the appeal of Oasis when they first burst on the scene was that they all behaved exactly like a bunch of scallywags, exactly the type of people who'd steal something and pass it off as their own, step over people to achieve stardom, which is why the middle class did and still do despise Oasis. Noel has been open about stealing riffs just as he was open about getting done for shoplifting. Now we have all this handwringing about his lack of decency when he never pretended to be anything other than who he is.

It's really weird this situation because although all this was going on at the time, especially 1997 with Don't Go Away, Noel, ocean colour scene and the two Griffiths brother played day tripper together on a night of OCS's tour. You can notice that the Griffiths and noel don't really look at each other during the song, but I can't understand why they would play together considering what was going on.

im so glad to hear people are talking about this again, I've been good mates with Tony and Chris for many many years, was a member of the band for a few years and spent a good few years in there studio with them helping them record a great many records with so many different artists and all that time "that cheque was on the wall the whole time". they are without a doubt the most prolific and melodically wonderful songwriters, ive heard those Reels many many times its so overwhelmingly obvious, and to be fair when the first oasis record came we all knew those songs were Realies songs its so obvious, made ever harder when knowing all the parties involved . it certainly was a shitty thing to do. Noel always seems to be a fair and although highly disagreeable he's usually jovial and fun to be around most of the time but damn would I love to see his face if Tony and Chris walked in the room, I think they are owed a sit down and a hatchet burying as one thing I know about the Griffiths brothers is they are Honest to a fault and no matter how hard they try they can't hold a grudge they are far to big hearted for that. Lets hope one day it happens

My opinion is Oasis were originally Liam's band formed with his mates. Noel was asked to come down and audition with them and play some songs that he'd written over the years. However there is a good 5 years between Liam and Noel in age and whilst Liam wanted to be a rock star Noel had already lived that life to an extend from his days working with The Inspiral Carpets. Noel didn't have the same feelings of goodwill towards Liam's mates the other members because there weren't his mates they were Liam's. To Noel they were just hired hands and ultimately Noel is quite a shrewd character. Ultimately Oasis were a vehicle to showcase his song writing skills and a way to try and get rich and his ruthlessness and occasional wickedness showed he didn't care who got in the way. An increasing ego and drug consumption probably didn't help and drugs and alcohol can often bring out the worse out in people. I'm not trying to suggest Noel is all bad mind.

Excellent video, James and really interesting as I wasn't aware of this story myself. In a way it doesn't surprise me that Noel would have done this as he always did have that dark side to his personality and maybe it was ego and greed that took over. One thing that stands out to me funnily enough about Rockin chair is the chorus sounds quite similar to the pre-chorus of Tiffany's "I think we're alone now" the "running as fast as we can" bit in that song. So perhaps he should credit Tiffany too for that one lol. Great video anyway, James as I always enjoy your Oasis analysis back story ones.

Discovered and loved The Real People and Rain in my mid to late teens, about 1991. Proper rootsy bands. When I heard Supersonic for the first time on the ITV chart show I thought, that's brilliant, sounds like The Real People. It does resemble the magnificent Car Outside you gotta admit. I do wonder how much of Marshmellow Lane Noel had heard in the run up to Definitely Maybe. There's such a similar sound to The Realies throughout that first album

The real people were recording marshmallow Lane around 92 I think. I'm guessing Noel heard a lot of it when they were touring with the inspiral carpets. Also Chris and Tony probably played them their songs in the studio. That album looks to have had a massive influence Noel a prime example being feel the pain which he lifted for don't go away.

Noal is a great tallent but there's a reason I'm not into his High Flying Birds stuff but was a huge fan of OASIS. It may well be Noel who drives the genisis of these songs and gives these songs their colour and depth, but, clearly it takes a band to make them, and the sublte nuonces are as important as any other part of any song. Maybe copyright law should be changed to reflect this.

James, if you go on the Real People's Wikipedia page, you see that Anthony Griffith's is credited for providing backing vocals on supersonic. Is this the album version? Or some sort of demo? I've never heard backing vocals on that track. Worth a video perhaps?

Great video James. Yeah the Real people were shafted by Noel I don't why he did it when they helped so much in the early days. On a plus side though I bet a load of Oasis fans when hearing these stories go check out the Real people back catalogue and might become fans of theirs and go and see them live. Also Tony's book is excellent I got it when it first came out and I did think at first some of the Noel bullying stories where a bit exaggerated but over the years I've changed my mind. Does anyone have a link for the song that sounds like rocking chair.

Concerning "Rockin' Chair": In the booklet of my edition of "The Masterplan", the song is credited to Noel Gallagher and C. Griffiths. This is printed on both the CD and the booklet. I bought the album in 2001.

Great video! i think part of is it to do with the wider issue of selling the oasis myths that was so important in their early success. The myth that the band were plodding along and then noel walked in with a bunch of songs and took over the band was massive at the time. that would have been undermined by a shared songwriting credit. maybe noel had to wrestle with the truth and the creation of the legend there are many other myths involved in the creation of the band that were sold to the press and helped fuel their rise.

It’s been said by quite a few people in the band and close to the band that Noel changed after they got the record deal. Not for the better either. The Real People were on the Definitely Maybe DVD documentary though. Never understood that considering what had happened in the past.

@@deanmurphy8915 it seems very strange to me. The Definitely Maybe documentary came out in 2004 and Tony’s book came out in 2010. The Real people interview is very recent and there’s still animosity there so I don’t know what to think. Was adding the Real People on the documentary an olive branch?? I was certainly surprised that they appeared on it.

Another great video. One small nit-pick, which I may well be wrong about, is that comment from Supersonic Noel made about Tony. I interpreted that as being specifically about the manner of Tony's departure from the band which Tony has discussed many times in the past, rather than anything else that he might've written in his book. I really don't think Noel was saying that everything in Tony's book was true.

Completely fits Noel's character. If he can absolutely thrive on cutting his own brother out of his life and not have even an ounce of remorse about it, it would be incredibly easy for him to fuck over a bunch of guys he met and worked with for a time. Noel is only about Noel. Everything else is expendable.

it's not that simple..I'm no huge fan of Oasis anymore..Used to be as a kid but I'm still interested in some of their music etc..I heard that Liam had been slagging off Noel's wife and child. No matter how pissed off you are, that is not on. Not at all. No matter what you think of Noel, his family are innocent. Noel adores his wife and children, and I can see he is protective of them. I admire that. Liam comes across as more grown up these days, and that's cool..but to say all that shit to innocent kids...Just wrong.

im not surprised TRP got pushed to one side and weren't credited. i'd followed them until their first album, and saw them live shortly after it. they'd looked very promising, but afaik a lot of ep tracks were reused and it took the momentum out of it. not a surprising way to construct the album, as the eps were quite under the radar. NG has long pushed other's contributions or emphasised his own. i actually didn't know TRP were involved in oasis at all.

I used to have the Encyclopedia of British Hit Singles ( Mike Read Johnathan King & more DJs on the cover ) printed before Britpop. There was an existing act called Oasis - a light entertainment group a bit Swingle 2 if I’m not mistaken. Had the brothers gained their approval before using the name I wonder ? Makes sense when I remember how early they had All Around the World and Don't Go Away was written. this is important since people assume Oasis lost their edge either because Noel wanted to write ballads or because the original members left. this suggests it was a more natural progression that was in the works from the beginning

Hi I don't know where the Bootle studio was but I believe Supersonic, with Real People backing vocals, was recorded in the old motor museum studio on Lark Lane. The first gig I went to was the Real People in the Lomax. Their parents ran a butchers on Hawthorne Rd, lovely people.

I haven't followed Oasis' actions from mid 90's and don't know much about their work, but I find myself looking at my 4th video of this channel. Seems they were as troubled as Kinks, one of my favorite bands, and as in the case of Oasis much of the turmoil seems to be caused by the brothers as in Kinks. Great work!

By the way, If you haven't already you should listen to the story of Big Un and Oasis, I don't agree with most of what he tries to display but it's a good read aswell I believe Tony shared some of it in his book.
