Stef visits South America's tallest building in Santiago, Chile's capital. The tower was originally built as a symbol of development, but now it symbolises the evil side of that success story: high rates of depression and suicide.
The tallest building in South America rises from the fog of Santiago, a symbol of the country's powerful neoliberal economic system. However, someone jumps off it roughly every month. Depression rates are higher nowhere else than in this metropolis of exceptional economic success.
TRACKS publishes unique, unexpected, and untold stories from across the world every week.

Chile may be wealthy, but wealth does not provide immunity from mental illness/depression. Anthony Bourdain had wealth, traveled the world even stepped foot on Antarctica's ice. He even lived his passion of cooking and trying all kinds of cuisines from around the world. A dream life didn't save him. Its just that real.

Funny how several people here say that Chilean economic progress is to be thanked to the military dictatorship, totally disregarding the *fact* of the thousands of unlawfully imprisoned, tortured, exiled, murdered and disappeared, as if that were acceptable for the sake of wealth - for a few, not for the whole nation (Don't forget the difference between average and mode). Ignoring the *fact* that indeed depression indexes are higher in Chile. And, at this point, ignoring the struggle for ending the socioeconomic system leading to the 2019 protests and a possible new constitution. Suggesting that Chilean people doesn't realize how great their lives are because they have been brainwashed by leftist propaganda, or that they should be thankful because other Latin American people are having a worse time, or directly saying that Latinos are incapable of economic progress without dictatorships because we are (culturally? genetically?) lazy, show deep and varied degrees of ignorance, condescension, patronizing and racism. Today is September 11, 2023. 50 years after the coup, people are still looking for the bones of their loved ones, companies still can charge you whatever they want for everything you desperately need and you have no defense, you know that your retirement pension won't allow you to have a modicum of dignity in your last years while the owners of the pension funds get profits even when there are international economic crises. Still, the place you are born determines how far you'll get, as if we were in pre-revolutionary France. And then you come and ignore the fact that people went to jump from the highest tower in South America, or, more commonly, they jump to the subway line. The most frequent reason for interruption of the service. The Costanera Center tower had to install fences and defenses to stop the suicides. All because Chileans cannot understand how happy they are thanks to the dictatorship, right?

Sad to know that this is the result of capitalism and globalization many economies of the world ended bankrupt because of staggering debt. Our only hope Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior who redeemed the world of our sins. Open our hearts to God Almighty calling in Revelation 3:20, John 3:16-17, Romans 3:23, Romans 6:23, Romans 5:8. Prayers for Chile and all South American countries suffering from health and economic turn down. God bless us.

The representation shown in this film is entirely wrong. Chile had a AAA rating a Standard and Poor's until Bachelet screwed it all up. The best country in Latin America to live. Least corrupt, best services. Ask any Argentine, Venezuelan, Peruvian, Bolivian, Colombian. Chile has seen a massive immigration from those countries and even Haiti. Why, because it's better than the others, why, because of the economic reforms of the Chicago Boys.

@@chilesauce7248 that is the opinion of a right wing guy. He is normally only able to think about development, money in the pocket and “only the feat will survive in the jungle”. Also, you are naturally afraid of the evil socialism and equality of opportunities for equal people. Fortunately what you write is pure nonsense , and your friends, the “Chicago boys”, Pinochet’s good friends, are gone for a long, long time ago. So, go back to Florida where you belong.

People being in debt? That's their problem... What country in the world doesn't have people living on the never never? This whole vlog is a total misrepresentation. Awful. I have lived and studied Chile and her history from pre-Columbus to modern day for 21 years, this 26 minutes, is the worst half hours description of a country I have ever seen.

It is spelt Chile not Chili! The truth is there where many social programs during the military era, Pinochet even having a good relation with the Mapuches. Chile has the best public systems in South America, though they could be improved. What the people talk of in this vlog is nothing different to any other country, poverty, long work hours are evident in most countries, these people think life should be free! The population in Chile has been told capitalism is bad by far left forces for soo long, they actually believe that the system that bettered their lives is bad. Not true, that's why so many immigrants come to Chile, because it's better than other Latin countries! This is thanks to the economics of the Chicago Boys.

@@TheLuis0087 Where do you think South Korea's edge in technology comes from? From the institutional seeds from a dictatorship. A dictatorship doesn't necessarily mean the regime is evil. Rulers can be corrupt but so can entire societies. People who deal only in absolutes are unreasonable. A lot of European history, the countries were ruled by monarchs. The problem with Latin America isn't capitalism. There isn't anything more capitalistic about Latin America than say the United States or Britain or Japan, whatever modern economy. The problem is...the people themselves. Sometimes the people themselves are corrupt and backwards that a (beneficent) dictatorship is necessary to correct them. Latin America wants to avoid the real world of progress. This is why the outsourced jobs are going to people like the Chinese. Why the Chinese and not Latin Americans? Or Indians? Because the Chinese know that the easy life does not provide self-improvement on par with their standard. Just look how much progress the Chinese have accomplished in a very short period of time.
