There are definitely downsides. People treat you differently, 'friends' that come out of the woodwork, family members you never even met before are now calling you daily. You're not sure exactly who you can trust.

@@lazylightning1197 maybe, but it sure beats the lack of freedom in your life, you don't have to report into a job you don't like or work a set number of hours, you can just focus on existing and enjoying the experience. it means peace of mind. new friends can be made to replace the old ones if they no longer serve you, you can marry and create a new family who will be loyal etc

That lovely lady who was in charge of all the lunch ladies ticket. When she said she would have switched her ticket 🎟 if it was the winner with the lunch ladies ticket, just so that more lives could be changed. I thought that was the sweetest, most humble, good-natured idea. And yet the media thought she would have done the opposite! Just proves that good people don't get changed with money. They still good people.

I knew a guy who inherited $400k. He blew it all in less than 4 years and he was living where he didn't have to pay rent. He barely had to pay for food if he didn't want to. And at the time he could have bought a house with a few acres and a barn in a beautiful area (California) for a quarter-mil. But he ended up living in an old RV and then he hung himself.

I guess it shows that money doesn't necessarily buy happiness (well, it does, but only up to a certain amount), nor does it buy everything. These people sound like they had everything already. They had a house, they had a family, they had friends, they had hobbies and they had jobs they enjoyed. Having money doesn't suddenly change you, so your hobbies go from hitting up garage sales on the weekend to joining a hoity-toity country club and playing croquet with a bunch of people you can't stand. If you want to live it up, it comes with hidden costs. Fancy sports car? You have to insure it (which costs more), maintenance costs more etc.. Want a big house? Bigger property taxes, more upkeep, might need to hire cleaners, what do you even do with all the empty rooms? Want to buy a boat? Where are you going to keep it? More taxes to pay, yadda yadda yadda. There's only so much extravagance you can have before it all starts to add up. Society makes it easier to hoard money, than to give it away. Want to fix houses after a storm? Red tape everywhere, lots of coordination needed to get builders in, and so on. Want to donate big money to your local community group? Lots of tax implications, the group may not be equipped to handle that money, they might need volunteers instead, so on and so forth. Want to feed the homeless? Need to start a charity, hire employees, make sure everything is above board, and eat into your money just to get things above board. You can't just go to McDonald's, say "give me 1000 cheeseburgers" and walk through town handing out free food. It costs money to spend and give money, so people generally don't, and so if you just stay modest with what you have, you end up being happier, because if the government takes 50% of $5 million, you're still content with your ice-making refrigerator and your freshly painted house, and aren't panicking about how you're gonna afford your property taxes on your 30 room mansion.

The problems start because everyone knows you won. ALL winners should be allowed to remain anonymous. If no one knows you have it, you won’t be targeted. You can live a low key life, with ALL your bills paid in full. No need for a huge house and crazy car. Take a nice vacation annually, pay off your mortgage, find a job you love because retiring early can leave you aimless, and above all, SHUT YOUR MOUTH.
