When there's a touch of sadism present, you learn NOT to let them know the effects of their behavior. Eventually, that is... after you accept the fact that THEY WANT TO HURT YOU. Learning that makes it much easier to detach emotionally, and do what you gotta do.

Modeling empathy at every opportunity. Verbally acknowledging "I see you have an owie... that must really hurt, I'm sorry that happened. A band-aid and some ointment always makes me feel better... wanna try it?"

Lots of people think "dangerous criminal" when they hear "psychopath". Most are probably aware that they could be if they wanted to live their lives like that but why not change the 'curse' into a blissing? Make a free will choice to not be typical.

She would fill the lamp with gas, and he would empty it. Or she would notice it was getting low and then see that it was full. Basically fucking with her head, then telling her she was crazy when she asked about it.
