Asuka is a character that is designed to be disliked, she is constantly rude to everyone, and is annoying to the one person she isn’t rude to. They make you want to see her get punished for all her actions. But they don’t punish her. They brutally torture her. This makes you consider how you really felt about this all. It makes you think if Asuka is a bad person or a damaged one. It makes me question her and everything that’s happened to her. Because there are a lot of damaged people out there, and even in the show, like Shinji, who despite going through what he did, still is as nice as he can be to everyone around him. The core philosophical question asked by this show is, “Do we suffer such agony because, as beings with individual consciousnesses, we are doomed to never be fully understood by others?” Asuka’s character is a direct reflection of this philosophy, because we as an audience never ask WHY Asuka behaves the way she does, we choose to see her through a black-and-white lens, that she’s just rude and mean because she’s a shitty person, and as a result we hate her for it. This is exactly what people do in real life. This series challenges us to ask ourselves, is ANYONE simply a bad person? And to notice that when you finally do try to understand Asuka, suddenly that hate you felt for her goes away, and is replaced by compassion.

You know... Asuka's struggles are way too personal for me. One of my biggest crushes and eventually partner in life was a girl just like her. Shielded herself from others, was absolutely toxic, and just a small pint of affection was enough to launch her on explosive and unpredictable behavior. But then, just sometimes, vulnerability escaped through her and she let me know how much she appreciated me. I came to realise she was deeply in love with me as well only after we split apart, after high school, and that was the way she used to show it: by showing me what was going on inside her. She had a terrible family, being school mates, I had the chance of seeing them myself. Every time I think I would help Asuka and just try to show her how much I "look at her", I remember this girl and think "Oh yeah... I have tried that before." Loving her has scarred me for life.

Even though its probably because shes a ghost of her past I always felt it that child Asuka being blue when confronting her present self was her seeing her past self as a doll; as in how she views Rei. She saw a time where she wasn't carrying her own struggles and lived under the thumb of her parents; much like how Rei lives under the thumb of Gendo (A technical father, and unbenknowst to Asuka he is a distant, distorted lover) and lives fufilling Gendo's goals rather than her own. Not only does she hate Rei and calls her a doll to bury the pain of how her mother treated her; she complains to run away from herself. (Ritsuko strangling Rei can therefore be a mirror of Asuka's mother strangling the doll. Both frightened to deterioration by heartbreak) ... Putting all of this into words just made me realize how this interpretation is very miniscule and mostly loops back to the same conclusion. But I guess thats the point of this imagery. It adds without distracting.

Except for Rei, every single characters lies and hides things. Asuka got the worst of it because she doesn’t ask for what she wants. She wants to be treated well and be loved, but wants people to do it in ways she wants on their own, when they can’t know that. She doesn’t think people care about her, because they don’t express it in a way she longs for and when she wants it. This is the tragedy of her psyche and why she became comatose. She is THE character that would benefit greatly from an honest conversation. I wish she had more scenes with Rei and they would understand each other better and became friends. They have a lot in common. But they couldn’t have done that bc if Asuka knew what Gendo was doing with Rei, she would have simply bitten his head off like Yui in EoE. Asuka behaves realistically for a traumatised, mentally ill girl with very shallow and low self esteem, no sense of inherent worth and identity (well she’s 14 so it’s normal), big emotions, destructive tendencies and overthinking.

I have watched all the episodes of EVA. I have to say that my favorite is still the original TV version, which is the version in 1995. This version has only 26 episodes. But I like the stream of consciousness at the end. It was not until many years after I grew up that I really understood that every character in the plot was in an extreme situation and no one had a better choice. Ikari Shinji chose to escape most of the time. Ironically, in the last LCL Sea, Ikari Shinji recognized himself and decided to break away from this false imagination. The LCL Sea at this time truly expressed the inner thoughts of each character. It was extreme, but also very real, and I liked this part. I still don’t like the content of the new movie version very much. It seems like a forced reconciliation. But humans have not reached this height. In fact, the content of the original TV version is more in line with the dilemma of humans. Asuka needs the recognition of others. I have to say that this demand is really one-sided. Her mother abandoned her, so she tried to be the best to gain recognition and motivation to move forward. It has to be said that in the process of fighting the apostles, Ikari Shinji is an unreliable partner, but Ikari Shinji still drives Asuka forward. So the two of them will have a strange ambiguous relationship. At that ignorant age, Ikari Shinji may not really understand what he is doing, and Asuka is also not very clear about what she is doing. Asuka's impulse is very external. There is a somewhat strange love triangle in the old TV version, because Ayanami Rei was copied from the genes of Ikari Shinji's mother, so this role dislocation made Ikari Shinji choose to escape in the end. But on the other hand, the charm of the old TV version lies in that it dissects the darkest part of human nature. There is selfishness, desire, and even sex. This is a height that the current film and television industry cannot reach. It has been degraded now. I still like the extreme human conflicts in the old version of the plot, and people now seem to not want to face this. Humans are sick most of the time. So the state shown in the animation is actually a normal state. There are not so many rational people in this world. Many people will make extreme choices. I still like the analysis of human nature in the animation at that time. Although they don't have the best painting technology, they are 300% invested in their works.

Holy these r two paragraphs Hey, sooo Im writing a main character and Asuka rlly inspired me on her! It'll be of a Shoujo genre but a lil spoiler is that the whole plot was just written during my gore-stan days, meaning that now I'm stuck developing my characters. Im horrible with my attention span and started to write this in the middle of the video lol, and I find that Asuka and my MC is quite common. Its a show with (trust me a good ending), taking the selfishness and immaturity of a teenager, Aka the MC, for the life of every human being on earth! ^u^ sooo basically she grew up an orphan in a government orphanage, leading her to work for the government in years after that orphanage gets burnt down. But before the interview for the selected job she attempts suicide by cutting herself, and literally ending up in a pool or I'd say river? Of her own blood which turns into a cloudy sky thats formed with her blood. Approached by two clones of herself they entrust her with the identity of "MOTHER" or, the woman who'll be responsible for every single human's virtues and misdeeds! She's given the sight and ability to hear people who are dead, their secrets and making them repent for it, since thats the easiest way to repent most of the humans she knows.. Thus making her a global corpse washer
