I feel that sexuality in Evangelion, specially with Shinji, is a way to abolish labels. I also feel that nobody ever comes to that conclussion, in my opinion calling Shinji straight, bi, or gay is simply wrong, for a variety of reasons

Some good points here. I also found the theory about Peter Parker being trans interesting. But I do want to push back against the phrasing of "you don't know unless you worked on the show"... there is no answer to the question. Her trans-ness is deliberately left ambiguous, and there is no correct answer to be "known," since she's a fictional character. Art is meant to be interpreted, and the people who worked on the art don't have a monopoly on what's the correct interpretation. People debating their interpretations of the art is valid, as long as they can do it without the hubris of thinking there is a definitive answer to be "known."

Tbh asuka is the most relatable and interesting character in the show,it shows how being mentally ill teenager girl feels being alone with ur own thoughts.When the first time I watched and read Eva I hated her until some episodes I realized how I could relate to her

Listen, I LOVE gay Shinji and trans Shinji, but I feel straight Shinji should be the canon in the og anime (haven't seen the movies except eoe), purely for ending to hit harder, it would mean he is so desperate for attention, anyone who says "I love you" is automatically his "one and only" regardless of their gender (even though it would count if he was "sane")

so, I think when rei had all the younger rei's with her, it was like in the anima light novels where she has several clones after she learns to have her soul in a few bodies or whatever. They all develop their own personalities, like they're their own person

He is bi but repressing it, if you want to take it a step more abstract him being forced to kill Kaworu could be seen as an allegory of a closeted "straight" friend shooting down (rejecting) an openly gay/bi male friend who shows interest. Just my two cents as a queer Eva fan

I lean towards him being bisexual but given his traumatic nature he can't express it in any natural way you gotta realize that he meets Kaworu and assaults Asuka when he's the most desperate for affection, whether or not Shinji held any feelings for Asuka can be called into question but during my watch of NGE, to me Shinji was at rock buttom and Kaworu came in clutch, granted I'm not Kaworu's biggest fan but he gave off "I'm cool with you regardless of what" sort of vibe did he love Shinji? did he manipulate Shinji? why can't it be both? the thing about NGE ships is that none (sans Toji and Hikari) are healthy in the long run for Shinji or anyone else, not too long ago I saw a post on EVA memes (yes, I know) that detailed an issue with Kaworu; he's too enablistic (wheras Asuka is too assertive IMO and Rei and Misato are Rei and Misato) neither of which are healthy in a young teen relationship NGE is a show filled with tragic characters, many of whom would end up in prison or dead even if SEELE's plan wouldn't have come into effect, these people hurt and use each other or don't even make an attempt to understand each other (which is a major theme) Shinji, unlike his adult father who's quite influencial, is noone, he's a kid that like his father walls himself off from others, could Kaworu have helped him crawl out of his shell? there's no telling but I would say no, to me Kaworu was too content with his death that aside, since Kaworu is Adam... does that make it the ultimate daddy kink?

You know... Asuka's struggles are way too personal for me. One of my biggest crushes and eventually partner in life was a girl just like her. Shielded herself from others, was absolutely toxic, and just a small pint of affection was enough to launch her on explosive and unpredictable behavior. But then, just sometimes, vulnerability escaped through her and she let me know how much she appreciated me. I came to realise she was deeply in love with me as well only after we split apart, after high school, and that was the way she used to show it: by showing me what was going on inside her. She had a terrible family, being school mates, I had the chance of seeing them myself. Every time I think I would help Asuka and just try to show her how much I "look at her", I remember this girl and think "Oh yeah... I have tried that before." Loving her has scarred me for life.

Call me sadistic, but i like that mindrape scene. It is the most brutal dissection of a narcissist that I've ever seen anywhere else. (I had an asuka character in my life or rather unfortunately, still have. and to be specific, someone that should've been a parental figure...) I get that Asuka should be pitied, but when someone makes your life miserable just because they hate themselves...it's really hard to have empathy for them. :/

It definitely scarred me when i was like 12 and gave me nightmares for a couple days but i was morbidly interested in it so that's why i kept watching and watched all the way through, then got curious at why the ending was so weird and grand and the portal was cool, the cosmic horror aspect is done WAY too good for anyone that's not an adult though. I only got through the nightmares because i reasoned that it was just a video, but not everyone comes to that conclusion right away. So it is Good and as it should be to take it down. It wasn't a restricted video anyways like it should've been.
