I think it's foreshadowing Exodus. Shredder's plan of conquering the Utroms is implied to have happened here so it's a way of saying "this is what will happen if he wins" which raises the stakes.

What is surprising is that in this reality, when Leo went on a journey in his absence, the lair was destroyed, just like in this reality, if Leo had not returned, they would have suffered a similar fate

Might I say, that THAT future wasn't some alternate dimension sort of thing, no, it was an actual future that exists and for at least a little while WAS the original story's future. Until Donnie returned anyway... But like those turtles had the exact same history as the ones we've been following. Not only was history the same, but they WERE the original turtles

My only problem with this episode is that it was just ONE episode and not an arc. They could’ve stretched this out and explore the new relationships between the adult turtles and April.

My biggest problem with this episode is that after it finished it was just never addressed afterwards. If you ask me going to a future where you practically disappeared off the map,then finding all your brothers again,then watching them all die, I think that would leave an impact on you long after you left that future.

That's not entirely true, sure we don't see the personal emotional fallout as 2k3 was definitely plot not character driven in its story telling. However three episodes later we have them all agreeing on a murder suicide attempt on the Shredder. Don told them what he saw they knew it was now or never with this. There was no question in any of their minds about what they had to do to stop the future Donnie went to.

As a kid I remember watching this and it was the first tmnt related thing I cried to. The turtle death scenes are the definition of "Its enough to make a grown man cry."

First off, Donatello is indeed King. Mikey used to be my favorite turtle because he reminded me of myself as a kid, but Donny is the best and my overall favorite. Second, between Same As It Never Was and Insane In The Membrane, SAINW hit me the hardest. Perhaps even of all TMNT episodes, that one hit me the hardest. Sure, IITM had some crazy body horror and it did have some sad moments, but SAINW makes me cry every time. And it’s one of my favorite episodes.

I think that Donny is the only turtle in 2003 TMNT, who witnessed all of his family (and most of the friends) died and somewhat overcome it. I personally like Leo more, but dear God Donny is the second strongest character in these series.

Being more of a superhero guy, I gotta say this episode sorta reminds me of that Teen Titans episode where Starfire goes to the future (albeit with a happier ending), so... Starfire is queen? 😂

Turtles is SUCH a great franchise and is near and dear to my heart much like the worlds of DC and even some Spidey stories when handled correcty. It's a fun brand to dive into! Lol, Starfire is Queen!!! I'll accept it!

I argue that Donatello is one of the 5 smartest comic based beings. Unlike: Black Panther, Batman, Beast, Prof X, Norman Osbourne, Reed Richards, Lex Luthor, or Dr. Doom Donatello is poor & is entirely self taught. This guy learned how to do: time & space travel, inter-dimensional science, computers, tech, chemistry, biology, alien tech, etc. all by himself with no money nor fancy education. Keep in mind that nobody helps him much when it comes to tech & it is all on him. He is perhaps even smarter than Baxter in the 03-07 Turtles. When it came to the mutation/bad genes Baxter was unable to fix the situation meanwhile Leatherhead was able to finish the work. Bishop said that Leatherhead might be smarter than Baxter but earlier in that episode/arc Leatherhead said that it was Donatello who did most of the work

I could imagine this episode scaring kids. It seems there's a comic now "The Last Ronin" which has a similar premise Donatello was always my favorite. Hope to play as everyone in Shredder's Revenge later

Donatello is king. And yes, this episode was pretty goddamn dark. I guess that in order for it to occur Donny was willing to sacrifice himself to stop the Shredder as well, but didn’t take into consideration the consequences. Another reason of mine is that he was so humiliated by Shredder’s escape and knew exactly it’s consequences and just ran away. But even that… it’s just not Donny’s character to just abandon his family. So if he wasn’t around Honeycutt couldn’t have hacked into the ship’s door, and the Turtles would be out of options. There is still the whole Bishop matter, but I assume Chaplin was smart enough to get Ch’rell and potentially Karai to safety.

As someone who watched the episode for the first time after seeing so much fanart and hype for it, all I can say is… DAMN. This is TMNT at its strongest and most compelling. Donatello really is king, the amount of pain and trauma this guy has to go through not only in this show, but in EVERY version, is heartbreaking, but he grows and becomes stronger as a result of what he’s learned. This just proves Donnie really is the best 😂

Definitely give 2K3 a watch as soon as possible! While 2012 has become my favorite after its run, 2003 is responsible for getting me into the franchise as a hardcore fan. That was my show coming up! SUCH good television. You won't regret it!

Man, This episode was one of the best in the 2003 series I mean this episode was so violent and dark its crazy. I mean The TMNT 2003 just goes more intense and violent from this point. Its a damn shame 4kids lightened up the tone and tone down the violence in last two seasons tho. I also surprised this show got away with of things. 4kids needs to start taking lessons from this show but they just won't listen, because they kept editing most of their anime especially yu gi oh. Tho the kirby dub was surprisingly good tho, since the censorship didn't go over the top compared to most of the 4kids dubs.

This episode is very good and, probably both SAINW and Insane in the membrance are worth to be remembered: not only because of it's features but having Donnie and April, two biggest pacifists as main characters as well. Personally, all TMNT apocalyptic stories strengh not only in showcase of situation but in Turtles fate and their family bond challenge There is an interesting idea:do you guys think Civil War in TMNT is something valuable to explore? I'll certainly explain concept if necessary

i remember at the time i just looked at it as a surprise episode featuring the current run of the turtles from when i was a kid i think i was in animation school then i knew a girl whos father was working on the series which got me watching it but it reminded me of when the turtles comics have a specific artist for months and then Eastman does an issue lol

Moments before watching this video, I was thinking to myself about how I don't like the dark takes on the Ninja Turtles and I also said in my thoughts that TMNT 2003 was my favorite and in my opinion the most definitive version of the Turtles because it perfectly blends dark with light heartedness. Then this episodes came to mind, because this episode, SAINW, is actually one of my favorites in the series, despite being so dark. I wanted to remind myself why, and the quickest way of doing that was searching up a video on KZbin about this episode to see if anyone else felt the same way. So I typed in, and I quote "tmnt 2003 darkest episode" as I didn't remember the name of the episode and I'm sure someone would have made a video discussing this episode with that as the title and your video popped up. I don't really know why I'm writing this comment, I just thought someone might find it interesting or whatever. Also, kinda a quick correction, but I remember hearing that 4kids wernt the ones who wanted to censor stuff when dubbing anime and such. It was actually Fox that were mandating the censorship for whatever reason. I don't know if this is true or not, but assuming it is, I kinda feel bad for 4kids, as people still believe them to be the bad guys, but even if they aren't, nobody will care as people have already firmly planted in their minds that 4kids was the problem.
