I think a detail everyone misses is that Leo's obsession with being the best was actually started by Splinter back during their childhood, when Splinter used the threat of his death to push Leo past his crippling fear of heights. Despite Splinter's best intentions, this instilled Leo with the idea that, if he wasn't good enough, if he didn't push himself hard enough; those whom he loves will die because he isn't good enough to save them. This fully manifests after Shredder nearly kills them and forces them to basically suicide bomb him in order to get rid of him

The depression arc is in keeping for Leonardo's character. He's the responsible one, the one who always makes sure they come through the battles alive, and this time they were completely outmatched. It's not uncommon for a more serious-minded hero to suffer from this kind of thing after being nearly killed by a powerful villain and only saved by the plot, but rarely does it have such a long-lasting impact as this. The healthy answer is to simply resolve to do better next time, but of course it's hard to tell if or how it's possible for him or his brothers to ever become skilled enough to defeat Shredder in that powerful battle body he was using.

When it comes to leonardo's role, Michaelangelo said it best in this season's episode samurai tourist. "It cant be fun.. always being the responsible one. & we're the ones who really benefit. And that's why it makes me SO mad Michelangelo never gets the credit that's due. He has ADHD sure, as someone with it I can see all the signs especially not being able to focus on something for long periods of time, unless it keeps your interest, but especially in the 03 series, he's VERY observant of his surroundings, of others, of people's emotions. It's why he's so GOOD at being able to tick Raphael off, why he breaks Leo's focus in Tales of Leo (let's be real Leo only pulled that move off cause he was ticked lol) and why Donatello trusts him to handle certain tasks. It's also why he's given the nunchaku as weapons. They take a LOT of focus to use properly, and Mikey HAS that. He just needed an outlet.

Regarding Karai, I have a slightly different take on her. Here's the thing, we already SAW Leo's descent so we didn't NEED to see Karai's. She's been seen enough that we know she was fiercely loyal to Shredder and honor bound to serve him. We also saw that she was beyond pissed off at the outcome of that battle. She ABSOLUTELY went through the same stuff Leo did, but where Leo had family to help stabilize him, Karai didn't. The difference, which is easy to infer, comes from "The Ancient One" I.E. when Leo strikes at Splinter. This is when EVERYONE realizes that there's something seriously wrong that needs to be addressed immediately. Even Leo himself comes to understand that he needs help and seeks it. Karai, and we know this from her characterization to this point, never had that safety net and if anything had even more time to stew in her emotions and less people to tell her that it was a bad idea. But unlike Leo, the root cause of the whole thing for her; the Turtles, are very much active. Their existence all but taunts her. It is kind of appropriate that we pick up with Karai RIGHT after Leo gets over himself. We get to see the divergent paths they take. It's almost as though Karai continues down the same path Leo was on and the end that path brings. It's not a coincidence that Leo tells her "you remind me of a turtle I used to know" He's talking about himself.
@GeteMachine3 жыл бұрын
Considering Kurai didnt have anyone on her way, and she was already the leader of the foot, she wouldn't have any emotional resistance or conscience to feel insecure with, but rather her going even more aggressive and trying to emulate the Shredder seemed pretty logical for her to just immediately do. She was his second and adopted his enemies as hers and her own fall into it, would be her overcompensating herself for how much the image of the Shredder's skill and respect made him feared.
@CarbonRollerCaco3 жыл бұрын
@@GeteMachine I think Shredder's philanthropic front may have further suggested to Karai that he may have had a good side even though she knew it was a ruse, and perhaps the stress of continuing that work to at least stay in the public's good graces may have wore on her as well while the Turtles, even Leo, had less outside pressure. Maybe she also felt she now had a chance to make up for Shredder's sins by acting as what she wanted him to be. She's quite the curiously conflicted character.

Karai going on a revenge rampage isn't out of the ordinary either way. This was the only outcome. Like you said, we know she was devoted to shredder, she never cared about being a good guy. She only worked with the good guys when there was a larger threat to everybody. Now that the alien thing is over, it's just personal beef. What was out of character, was her defending Leo when shredder was gonna kill him. She can't be stupid enough to think they could ever coexist. At some point they were gonna fight again, and if shredder had his way, he and karai would kill the turtles.

The 2003 series is better than the 2012 series in ALMOST every way. The two exceptions are Splinter's backstory with Shredder and Miwa/Karai and Shredder's character. Ch'rell was great and I liked the fact that he was an utrom, not to mention Scottie Ray had one of the most intimidating voices I've ever heard. I can completely buy that the Shredder was once a demon who rose from the depths of hell because of Ray's voice. The problem is that the character was bland. Even his relationship with Karai brought no depth to Ch'rell because he was almost as shitty to her as he was to everybody else, with the only difference being that he didn't slice her to pieces if she screwed up. Compare that to the 2012 Shredder. He was an arrogant, prideful man who always projected his flaws and mistakes onto other people, especially Splinter because he could never admit to himself that he was the bad guy. He just kept doubling down, refusing to admit that HE was the one who was in the wrong. Furthermore, I actually bought his relationship with Karai as he was a tough father but still clearly cared about her. That's far more compelling than Ch'rell, who was just evil for the sake of being evil.

How are the turtles likely to respond? • Mikey would goof off. • Raph would want to skip to the part about punching things. • Donnie might consider his more practical/technical knowledge a substitute for learning the lesson (though to be fair he's the second most disciplined turtle and I can't think of many examples of this happening) • Leonardo would listen or at least engage the lesson on its own terms.

I swear Leo's arc is the best thing happened to this brilliant show, thus making s4 my favorite by far. You said most of the things, but oh how I appreciate him pushing himself so far you can see how his fighting style becomes better and better. You start to get glimpses of that in the fight vs the rat king where he got focused, started anticipating steathy attacks and punishing them with unorthodox counters... later down the road he's good enough to absolutely destroy his brothers 1v3... and by the time he teaches fro the ancient one, accepts himself and gets his cool together, he becomes so damn out of this world, such a master improvisor he basically becomes the strongest martial artist of the show's entire history, ultimately becoming the only turtle that outskilled their master (with some glimpses of Mikey having potential to do that as well). I had Mikey as my favorite turtle throughout my whole childhood but this season just said: no, it's Leo now. And still is.

Season 4 of TMNT 2003 is what my friend and I call the "moody Leo" arc until the episode "Ancient One". But I could understand and sympathize what negative emotions Leonardo is going through. Feeling as if he let down his family after the season 3 finale. Thanks for going into such detail of the fourth seasons J's Reviews.

To me the best part in S4 is Leonardo's character arc, I mean I can understand what they were going for Leo's character, He's very much still scarred in his mind in the aftermath of Ultron Shredder 'Yes I'm still calling him that' and his by 'Prodigal Son' 'To me anyway' his character arc does come to a conclusion there, If it weren't for the Ancient One, His actions would have been the end of him, You may dislike with me everyone, But it's just a point I wanted to address.

I saw Insane in the Membrane on TV in Canada. I remember enjoying it. The gruesomeness grabbed my attention and raised the dramatic stakes for me. It brought a greater sense of horror, and made the decomposing body into a much more frightening element. It grabbed my attention, and didn't scar me for life. haha

its interresting to see that the 2003 had a similar problem as 80's version,but in reverse: the 80's was mix of action and comedy in the begining,but in the latter seasons started to become so goffy and corny that stoped having any stakes,and then in later seasons they tried to overcorrect by making them more "dark and edgy",yet failed the 2003 started as mix of action and comedy ,but in the latter seasons started to become too dark and edgy that started to make it fells to gratuitous,and then in later seasons they tried to overcorrect by making them more "funny and family friendly",and also failed

It honestly reminds me of what happened to Tim Burton's Batman after Batman Returns where toy companies put their foot down on doing any more products due to the darker tone, and asked for a lighter tone with Batman Forever and Batman & Robin. The same may also apply with Secret of the Ooze following the first live-action film.

Season 4 was my first full season. I think it’s honestly the next best after Season 3 if not the best. There is a golden run of episodes from Dragons Rising, Still Nobody, Samurai Tourist, and the Ancient One that I still adore. That was the peak of Season 4, and those were the last episodes before the winter 2005 break. This was also the first time I ever experienced hype from foreshadowing, even more than the Battle Nexus foreshadowing. That scene where the Tribunal tells the Ancient One that the Turtles have been chosen was soooo cool and mysterious, and then that freaking amazing hype ending of Good Genes where the Mystics are set free. That was HYPE! And the season finale was the first time i ever experienced a cliffhanger ending. Infinity War was the Empire Strikes Back of the 21st century, but this was my first real cliffhanger ending and it was crazy.

The show's dedication to continuity was really strong in this season. I love that so many of the episodes' plots are as a result of things that happened in previous seasons. For example, Grudge Match and Trouble With Augie both follow on from season 2 episodes (Big Brawl and April's Artifact). I like the writers referenced Leonardo's depression throughout the first half of season 4, even in episodes when he wasn't the focus of the plot.

Ah, so that's the reason. I remember being so confused when TMNT seemed to suddenly stop after the S4 finale, then picked up again a while later with the Turtles suddenly back in their lair with no reference to what happened with the Tribunal. It wasn't until years later when I decided to rewatch the series on KZbin that I found the missing season. Anyway, Good Genes is my favourite set of episodes since Donatello is my favourite character so stuff focusing around him is interesting to me. Though, Insane in the Membrane is the episode that has stuck with me the most. Part of it was the body horror (who could ever forget the image of Stockman hammering his own arm back together), but the mental degradation the guy goes through is really impactful, going from his plan to torture April to thinking he's a teen at his mother's bedside and then to thinking that he's still April's employer and working on the Mousers.

I am the kind who allways loved drama. I loved this show for daring to touch these themes and show these scenes... and fun fact: I never thought that Stockman lusing his body piece by piece was funny. Ever. I saw it as horifying from the begining, and 'insane in the membrane' feelt like preasure relief. Like finally geting some clousure for this tragic character that was evil but did not deserve all of that. Stockman felt to me like a lesson on arrogance: he was briliant. He didn't need to be a criminal nor the help of the Shreder and he couldn't see how bad he had it until his second body was falling to pieces and even then he blames someone else. It was a huge relief when he finally gets a happy ending.

4:55 One of the best episodes in the show. Trying to fight the Purple Dragons when they can barely even stand, so simple yet so brilliant. 8:52 Truly a tragically entertaining episode. Like Heart of Ice from Batman TAS. 15:32 It probably went on too long but it never really bothered me that much. I think it was actually a good arc for him and lead to some good moments with him and an interesting look in his psyche. If you're reading this and are going through something similar to Leo, take it from me we can't dwell on what ifs, it's just not healthy. 22:02 Mine too, and I think the lessons in the episode are really good and taught rather clever. 24:17 I agree I loved this show as a kid, but rewatching it as an adult it's a lot better than I remember, It's kind of like Snow White. You love it as a kid because it has nice music and pretty colors, but when you rewatch it as an adult you see there's actually rather deep themes in the story. 31:05 This is another great episode, intense but also giving his some good insight into Stockman's character. 35:15 I agree, while not exactly as well structured as season 3 season 4 is not without it's charm. Or really good episodes. 36:50 One I like from this season is Grudge Match where Mikey has to fight the guy he beat in the finals of the Battle Nexus, it's a fun episode that shows Mikey is a capable warrior when he puts his mind to it.

The most important part of a story is it's characters, the plot can't work if the characters don't make it and you fail to care about a setting if the plot doesn't matter. All this to say this show knew where it all started and pulled it off more than successfully. The characters were amazing.

"It can't be fun, always being the responsible one, and we're the ones who really benefit. Raph's free not to think 'cause Leo does all the thinking for him; Don's free to dream; and I'm free to take it easy, all because Leonardo is busy being _responsible_ enough for all of us." Mikey made this speech to his brothers & Casey in 'Samurai Tourist', the episode immediately before 'The Ancient One', and honestly I think it's the most profound in-universe (i.e is only such in context of the show & can't be externally applied to real life a la Uncle Iroh's wisdom) speech in the entire show because it really hits home how much pressure Leo is burdened with, given that he's essentially his brothers' caretaker when Splinter isn't there.

Leo’s arc in this season always meant a lot to me. The writers didn’t try to make his depression attractive, or quirky, or something you would ever want. It was raw, it was ugly, it was hard to watch. They didn’t sugar coat it at all.

Thanks for doing a retrospective of this series. The 03-07 is my favorite incarnation with this series having revived the franchise as it seemed over. I don't really count Fast Forward & Back To The Sewers as separate. I place only 2 "kids" shows above this: Avatar the Last Airbender and Batman. When done with this retrospective perhaps do a retrospective on one of the other all time great kids shows: Marvel, DC, Avatar, etc.

Only thing that I wished you would have mentioned was that Donnie's mutated form is a call back to the Mirage comics when Raph turned into a monster. The look is identical and definitely a call back to the original comics. As well as the title "Adventures in Turtle Sitting" is from the 80s cartoon when all the turtles but Mikey turned into kids and Mikey had to watch them until they turned back to normal. The animation of Donnie mutating also scared the hell out of me as a kid. Definitely one of my favorite episodes in the show. Love the video and can't wait for Season 5!!

Leo's depression arc is so good because you as the viewer are supposed to be frustrated with his behavior so many shows will have a character act like this but just not acknowledge how miserable it is to be around a person with this attitude or the show will expect you to side with them

I grew up with 2003 version. It being dark wasn't a problem and not how I remember the show. It was dark at times but as a kid, i mostly glossed over it. The show overall was captivating, compelling. All of the arcs and storylines what I remember. The 'dark' scenes only amplified the seriousness but it didn't overdo it, in my opinion. It what made the show so good and why I remember it better than any other show. When they changed, I lost interest. Same time I was growing up but still today, I enjoyed the show and can rewatch, even with the 'i watched this as a kid?' I watched all the seasons. Early seasons was the best.

Great video! One of the things you touched on that I appreciate is Casey’s flashback in Dragons Rising. I always found the scene more impactful for the way the writers used young Casey, which was more so for comedy in season 3’s The Lesson. The tone shift and how Casey’s lines are delivered make such a short scene really memorable.

Great video but i do wish you gave grudge match a segment as well as I thought it showed how Mikey was getting too full of himself and Raph finally get to see what’s coming to him only to get serious and then everyone would do everything in his power to help him but they couldn’t. It also showed one of my favorite interactions between Leo and Mikey as Leo didn’t want Mikey to get hurt so he trained him himself (though i do wish we got to see that). It showed when Mikey gets serious he’s very capable and nobel at heart and even thanked Leo for his aid. Mikey was always my favorite character but most of the time he interacts with Raph and Don. I think it was great seeing him interact with Leo and that Leo was there for Mikey whatever he deserved it or not. Mikey might be difficult but they really do love him all the same.

Bishop has to be a parody of the post 9/11 American sentiment going after everyone perceived as ‘other’ in the name of justice, only to end up hurting the very people they were supposed to protect. I just can’t see it any other way at this point (11 min into this vid).
