The back stories of all these old west folks is what makes history really interesting to me. They were not just some two demisional cutout characters from a dime store novel, but real flesh and blood folks who were just trying to live in a time & conditions were not so easy

Hi John! While there are a number of sources that make the claim that Billy bragged about killing 21 men by the time he was 21, I haven't been able to find definitive proof that he actually ever made that claim. According to quite a few historians, including David T. Kirkpatrick (www.lascrucesbulletin.com/stories/did-billy-the-kid-really-kill-21-men,4299), he actually killed four men by himself, and participated in the murder of five others.
