The Chrissiest Chris Im a fan of the show, although sometimes I don't find it funny but pointless yet I have the patience to sit through a few bad episodes IMO in order to enjoy the really well done ones but I wouldn't call myself a fan of Seth MacFarlanes if that makes sense? Two main reasons for that are 1. People act like he's some type of comedic genius or pioneer, we wouldn't even know who Seth MacFarlane is if he wasn't so good at putting himself in the center of everything which is why he got so much press coverage which caused many people to become fans and many people to straight up hate his guts because he acts like he's some type of Mike Judge, Trey Parker or Matt Groening when he's clearly not. Seth MacFarlane had one hit Family Guy and Fox milked him and the show for all it was worth which isn't fair to Seth but he needed a paycheck at the end of the day. Plus the effect Family Guy has had on Cartoons that have followed is minimal when compared to Bevis & Butthead, early seasons of The Simpsons and SouthPark. At the end of the day Seth MacFarlane didn't do much for comedy on TV, he's funny don't get me wrong but I feel he's very overrated and #2. Every single movie Seth MacFarlane has made is horrible. I honestly don't know how anyone found Ted, Ted 2 and the worst movie ever made A Million Ways To Die In The West funny at all. Apart of me feels that because Seth MacFarlane is soo good at goading people into the response he wants from his writing that time is the best way to tell if he's as good as some say he is or a hack like some say he is. I believe the truth is somewhere in between these two camps. I mean let's be honest we all know at least one person you can get a reaction out of when you tell him Family Guy sucks and most people enjoy seeing someone spaz out over you not liking what they like I think that plays a role in it as well. I'm definitely guilty of it, simply because I'm a jackass and I don't think you should put anyone's work on a pedestal but that's a different debate for a different time. I hope my explanation of how I'm technically a fan of the show but not a fan of the cult of Seth MacFarlane shed some light on how his fan boys have literally created people that "hate" Family Guy or Seth MacFarlane just to see someone spaz out over it when it's not a big deal at all. It's simply an opinion

Also doesn't help that every member of the family is a completely different person from what they were in the beginning. Meg went from being just simply unpopular and relatable to being straight up hated by her entire family with the weirdest ridiculous issues (tentacles on her body for example). And the episodes around her always go the same way. They start tormenting her for basically no reason. She calls them out. They learn a lesson and suddenly appreciate her and them seem to forget all of it by the next episode. Lois went from being the loving mother to a raging psychopath that despises her family. And that's just two examples.
@crazy922blade2 жыл бұрын
And Brian turned from a funny, sarcastic character into a self-centred b-hole who basically let children get abused in one episode just so he could date a attractive, unqualified teacher and upon discovering she had a boyfriend, then he found a problem. When Stewie was going to tell Lois that his arm was dislocated by his teacher like he should, Brian was so narcissistic that he forced Stewie’s arm back into its socket, preventing any evidence of abuse. He acts like he’s better than anyone and everyone else. Sometimes I genuinely agree with Quagmire’s thoughts about Brian.

I would say after season 5 is when the jokes started becoming unfunny and even cringey. Meg was actually a tolerable character before then and now it feels like they try so hard to make her feel "relatable" to teenagers it's hard to watch. That's not to say they haven't had inconic funny episodes since season 5, I would just say that since the new animation style the episodes stop being consistently funny and more politically correct. Seasons 1 & 2 (even 3) were by far the best with in my opinion the very first episode being the funniest by far. I wished they stopped after season 9 because now it's just hard to watch with recycled humor and advertiser friendly jokes.

Family Guy died after the writers strike. When it came back in season 4, it seemed like it was never cancelled to begin with, as it immediately hit its stride and rode it out for two more seasons. Then the writers strike happened, and all the episodes after the 100th episode special (which was planned to air as the season 5 finale) had a massive drop in quality. Characters became flanderized, comedic timing was thrown out the window, the show got way more political, and it started being pointlessly edgy and cruel.

Greetings from 2119. After the end of the third American Civil War, all of the current actors for "Family Guy" were killed in a nuclear air-strike by the Alaskan Rebellion, now the Alaskan Empire. Seth MacFarlane died in 2037 because he was killed by some hater of the show, so Tom Holland, of all people, took his place. He was still playing the parts of Peter, Stewie, Brian, and Quagmire at the time of his death. I don't know why he would want to live in a crappy country like the United States, but for some reason he decided to take the job and move there. The show was cancelled by the Alaskan Empire's government. However, it was renewed after its 23 cancellation, because "FAMILY GUY" NEVER DIED. IT WILL NEVER DIE, NO MATTER HOW HARD YOU TRY TO KILL IT. I'm not saying I like it, but it has been cancelled *so* *many* times and has always come back, and there is nothing that any rebellion or empire can do to stop it. I also regret to inform you that "The Simpsons" was cancelled in 2037, because the person who killed Seth MacFarlane was the creator of the show, and after the incident, the ratings dropped tremendously.

I like to pretend that Family Guy ended with S08E17. "Brian & Stewie" was such a perfect episode and such a departure from Family Guy's standard formula that, in my opinion, it not only stands as the best episode of the entire series but also serves as a satisfying conclusion to Brian and Stewie's character development. If you just pretend that "Brian & Stewie" was the series finale and ignore everything that came after it, then as far as I'm concerned Family Guy ended on a high note.

I liked Life of Brian but literally only for one reason: Stewie. They really made the fact that, although he’s a genius, he’s still just a little kid, very apparent. And I felt that they captured how a little kid feels when they’re pet (their best friend) dies. He was in denial, he wanted to go back in time but he couldn’t because he threw away his time machine. That’s a very relatable feeling, wanting to go back in time to save a pet (especially the way Brian died). I know nobody’s going to read this. I guess I’m just typing it to myself because, well, I lost my cat a few months ago when he was hit by a car, so I really know what Stewie is feeling. I just wanted to say this and get it out finally. Cartoons aren't meant to last long. You can make exceptions but especially shows like Simpsons or Family Guy which rely on 2-3 plots per episode, eventually it gets impossible to get new ideas without having to sacrifice writing and sadly that's the compromise many do just to make more money. 4 maybe 5 seasons is enough for a cartoon. Even then that's pushing it.
@steeldriver53383 жыл бұрын
South Park is a gem all it's own. I can't think of any other show that I could compare it to. The show's reliance on current events enables it to stay relevant, and with how crazy the world can get and with all the idiots that exist in it, the show could go on for years more I believe. Granted, it did have it's rough patches, but it's come back from it so far. I am still a little unsure about the Tegrity Farms trend though...

I think BRIAN was more than the voice of reason. At the beginning, he was a completely deadpan character. At some point, he became expressive like anyone else, which kind of ruined his humour.
@feraflauna32386 жыл бұрын
+Vits Vicente Torres-Also more THAN that :D, he was probably the only individual in the series that was reasonably self-aware. Everyone else just took all the weirdness that came into their lives. ..Brian was really the only one who pointed out just how weird things were, ie. if he ever saw Peter get into a random fight with a giant chicken, he would have casually commented over just how strange. . and. . .random that was. . .because it is. . .and how. .and how these weird things shouldn't make any sense. However, probably in part due to the fact he was a talking dog and no one still listened to. . .a talking dog. . .he might have tried to get everyone to see just weird their lives are but eventually gave up when he knew they didn't want to listen. He probably did let Lois know at some point that Stewie was evil and out to conquer the world but she was willfully oblivious to the fact her baby son could talk-in a British accent no less-and was out to become the world's greatest supervillain. And when Lois didn't listen, he just gave up and took it as it came. That deadpan self-awareness has been largely obliterated at this point as Brian slowly morphed into a condescending, snide, pretentious, and insufferable a-hole endlessly preaching for tolerance and understanding when he became one of the least tolerant and understanding individuals. He even went so far as not only to criticize Meg's newfound religion in one episode because he simply didn't agree with it, but he told Meg there just can't be a God (despite that. . .God and Jesus exist in Family Guy. . .they've. . .appeared. . .several times.. . before. . .) because she is ugly and her family hates her. Just. . .what. . .the. . .flipping. . .hell? That is just awful and MEAN. His flaws became so exaggerated and cartoonish to where all that came to a point where Brian stopped being likable. He was just yet another a-hole in Family Guy, only far more pretentious and condescending that he just wasn't "like them." Spare me.
@Tips4Tat6 жыл бұрын
Beyond the unnecessarily long post, this quote is spot on: _"more THAN that :D, he was probably the only individual in the series that was reasonably self-aware."_ Old Brian's humor was biting, curt, and ironic. This new version, aptly summed up as a "Fraud," alienated me from the series.

This theory of Seth McFarland dying with Brian was very deep. It is very true that the show lacks the comedy and greatness it once had, heck I found myself watching a episode of family guy today and I turned the tv off because I just couldn't bare to watch anymore! Family Guy has went downhill to the point where I can't watch anymore. A modern family Guy episode that is great happens once in a blue moon, and we shouldn't be expecting for Seth and his crew to write up something fresh anymore because family guy is dead and I believe we should all leave it in the past. From the 1990s to every episode before Life of Brian we've had great comedy and originality but now it's time to let go and let Seth McFarland move on to bigger better things.

You play that clip from Brian and Stewie and it's a nice little scene, but when you think about it compared to all the times Stewie has literally told Brian he's full of shit, where is the weight? Family Guy didn't die on just one day, it was gradual thing where Meg became a punching bag, Peter and Lois began to hate each other, Chris became a background character, Stewie became stuck up and Brian became pretentious. And the writers try really REALLY hard make us care about characters they constantly tell us don't care about each other and learn nothing from their experiences. This is not saying it an't be enjoyable or funny at times, but by the time Brian died, the show was already on zombie mode.

It's been a while since I stopped watching weekly, so I can't exactly pinpoint the moment the show died to me personally, but one of its current negative factors is that it relies way too much on shock humor now. It gets old quick and it just becomes aggravating. I can't remember which episode this was, but there was a scene where Peter was saying goodnight to everyone in the house, and after he says it to Meg and closes the door, it shows that she hung herself, and the episode ends. I know Meg is basically a punching bag of a character, but come on, bruh....They expected that to be funny?

Agreed. After a certain point, it seemed like every episode had at least one or two scenes that were unquestionably sick, gory, and/or foul without being in the least bit funny. Characters getting maimed, skinned, killed, etc. It's like they hired a sociopathic writer at some point, and it felt totally out of step with the tone of the first (and best) seasons.

Disagree. Family Guy died when Brian ceased to be essentially the voice of Seth Macfarlane, and that was much earlier. Brian was never intended to be an annoying pseudo-intellectual douche... he *became* one because many fans simply don't like intellectuals. I'd say the show died when Brian became such a parody of himself that he actually became "friends" with Rush Limbaugh... give me a break. Clearly at that point, Seth was no longer speaking through Brian, and it was at that time that he wasn't invested in the characters or the success of the show any more. This happened long before the episode in which Brian died -- Brian, as originally conceived, died a long time ago -- in season 9, episode 2. The Brian who died in season 12 episode 6 wasn't Brian at all.

Brian as a mouthpiece for Seth is already pretty stupid as Seth himself is just some psuedo intellectual but at least Brian wasn't in your face about it and at least the Seth treated him with enough respect to make it look like the show thinks he's smart. Yup, agreed. He gets way too much credit as some sophisticated guy; he's an obnoxious moron who fakes his intellect by trying to act superior to everyone else. Stewei essentially just calls out his bullshit and it's so funny when he does.
@ketchup1436 жыл бұрын
but brian had reason to be superior, until his character wilted away to be like everyone else. i think they ran out of ways for him to be the voice of reason, so they just turned him into a d-bag, because it's a cartoon and they could. in fact, the show becomes like that all around, where shit just happens for no reason and the story loses all its meaning.

Jose S No Quagmire was always a sex depraved asshole. When he gave Brian that tongue lashing, he openly admitted his own short comings and who he was and what he understood himself to be. Quagmire's personality is shown to have two bridges, either he is a sex offender level freak or he is a total pussy whooped tool that is so weak that he is abused and held captive by a woman. Quagmire doesn't respect the women he picks up, but he respects the women that he loves, and so in my opinion he has never been a hypocrite, he knows exactly who he is and the writers have made him more complex since season 5. As a transgender Man, it is not how Quagmire's reaction to his father that is the problem, it is how the show treats the entire issue. Quagmire's reaction is, in my opinion, completely normal and he still hangs out, goes shopping, and spends time with his father despite the entire thing being so weird to him. I've known people who completely disown and never talk to their parents again, at least he puts in that bit of effort because he loves his father. Don't get me wrong, Quagmire is disgusting and should be put in prison, but I believe that you are wrong and it also doesn't make his opinion on Brian incorrect, if anything it is even more accurate because if he can see how fucked up Brian is, that should say something and that is why he is the one that lays into Brian because even the most low life depraved piece of shit can see that Brian is a bad dog.

I think the day that Family Guy died was when all the characters started to change. For instance Peter went from a really funny and goofy dad who loved All of his children and friends, to being a jerk who bullies his friends. He became mean spirited and down right nasty to the point of making me not wanting to watch. The way the whole family treats Meg is sicking. Nobody treated her that way before now he passes gass in her face or just tuns her out. Why change Stewie who was always thinking of ways to kill his mother or take over the world. Lois just became a whore and really bad mother , and Peter's friends are just kind of background noise now. I don't know that is just what I think.

I also agree that killing Brian was a cheap ploy but what I found even more infuriating was Brian's revival. I'll admit to liking the episode where Brian died because it was filled with sincerity and earnestness, you believed that he was gone for good and the episode served as an effective eulogy. His resurrection was not only a cheap cop out that showed the utter spinelessness and laziness of the writing staff, but it also makes the genuinely poignant death episode COMPLETELY irrelevant. I know writing a tv show is hard but when you make a decision so drastic as to kill off one of your main characters, you better have a plan for what to do afterwards, you made your bed and now you have to lie in it. I realize this is going on ridiculously long and is descending into a full on rant, but this has been on my mind for a while. Another thing that makes his revival lazy was that the writers established in the death episode that Stewie can't use his time machine to go back and save Brian establishing that Brian's death is permanent and cannot be resolved by a Stewie Griffin sci-fi deus ex machina, meaning they basically ignored and contradicted their OWN FREAKING RULES. And as for the last guy who replied in this thread, there's actually a term for the effect you're describing on character traits, it's called "Flanderization".
