@@skan5728 Tywin WAS a main character, so I could just as easily say that other characters were an antagonist to HIM, and therefore THEY are the villains. See how that works? Not to mention that every Lannister in the show (even Tyrion) would be far better off with Tywin as King than a king from some other House, so how is he an antagonist to them? Yeah he was an ass to his kids sometimes, but they would've all been ruling Westeros in various castles if he was in charge. Were the citizens of King's Landing better off being ruled by the Mad King, Robert Baratheon, Joffrey, Tommen, Cersei, or Danerys? I could argue that they would have been better off under Tywin's rule than ANY of those people. That would make HIM the protagonist in the story. It's all about perspective, isn't it?

@@JakeKoenig Nah he's a villain, and he's actually very weak himself too despite his veneer. All his talks about family, how marriages for love are unnecessary - but he loved his wife and when she died he refused to remarry, even though he could've made a strong political allegiance and produced more heirs. Tyrion is 32 at the start of the show and so Tywin has avoided doing something he's happy to order his children to do for the 'family' for 3 decades. The red wedding, besides it's obvious heinousness, also represents a failing of an understanding of how to work within the confines of a society governed by the rule of law - by creating a climate of fear and using betrayal, no one will ever trust you again. And against the world, the lannisters would lose. He took a foolish shortcut, and he's somewhat lucky he died before everything could come back and destroy his family, though being murdered by the son he hated and screwed over all the time because of his own petty anger is also pretty embarrassing

The High Sparrow starts strong as a villain but gets dumber as his story progresses. He manipulates Cersi into arming the Faith Militant as a weapon against the Tyrel’s then betrays her and imprisons. Pretty solid villain work there. But then he stupidly lets Cersi go back to her power base at the Red Keep, assuming the humiliation of the Walk of Shame would break her. And even more stupidly he assumes Cersi will show up for a trial where she’s guaranteed to be found guilty and either be executed or imprisoned for life. And he gathers all of Cersi’s enemies together in one place for her to target. He died a moron.

In his defence, I think people read him wrong when they lump him in with the 'schemer' type villains. Yes, he plots how to get ahead, but he's actually a true believer. This is what makes him stand out so much for me. I absolutely don't accept this interpretation some people have that he's 'using' the church to gain power. He really does believe in what he's spouting, really does think a life of poverty and simplicity brings him closer to the gods, really does despise the corrupt elite who live beyond the judgement of the law. The elites of King's Landing struggle to deal with him so much purely BECAUSE he isn't just scheming for personal power. If he was then they'd know how to handle him and he'd never have become a threat. In the end, yes, he stupidly underestimated Cersei, and he massively overestimated the influence of the gods. But he had essentially become blinded to the power of the masses to enact their will upon the elite, and genuinely believed it wasn't an issue if she didn't show up because she would be found guilty anyway and justice would find its way to her. He dies for this mistake, much like Cersei dies for underestimating the power of a dragon and Robb dies for trusting the honour of a Fray. As for bringing all of Cersei's enemies into one place, I'm pretty sure the stash of wildfire is still a secret to most at this point (and if they knew of it, they probably think it was all used up in the Battle of the Blackwater). So if there was going to be any attack by Cersei, it would be surrounding the Sept with soldiers. If that happened, it would actually be excellent to have Margaery there, because he believes she's an ally of the Lannisters and that Cersei wouldn't want to harm her. After all, she's engaged to Cersei's son and when the walk of attonement was scheduled, Cersei's brother came to defend Margaery's honour. She's a human shield. He just didn't realise that she was a human shield Cersei would be more than happy to fire through.

The High Sparrow wanted the people to see the elite brought down to their knees. That's why he has Cersei do the Walk of Shame. It sends such a strong messages to all. Followed by Little Finger. Tywin only defeated Robb and lost to Tyrion.
@lolad12577 ай бұрын
@@spointz8936 Robb was changed a bit. They made his marriage that led to him crossing walder frey (and thus... dying) a choice based on love rather than what it was in the books, which was that overly strict sense of duty and honor instilled in all of the Stark kids by Ned. In the books, he slept with a random woman in camp and got her pregnant, and then married her out of a sense of duty & thinking back to how tough Jon's life was as a bastard. He is someone who is still trying to emulate his father, and breaking a vow just because it feels good is definitely not in character. His death due to this also helps the living Stark kids to get past this fatal flaw that killed both Ned & their brother and mother. All of that is undercut by turning Robb into a fool in love. That being said, it doesn't make the character significantly worse. Definitely not ruined. But... not quite the same.

The Tully family are the biggest villains of the show. Liza killed John Aaron, which started this whole mess. Cat kidnapped Tyrion which caused Jamie to delay Ned’s leaving of Kings Landing. Edmure went for that fort instead of doing what Rob told him which made Rob have to beg Frey for passage across the bridge.

I definitely don't think she thinks she's innocent. A huge part of her arc was devoted to her trying to be a liberator instead of a conqueror; trying not to be like her father. Of course that was all thrown out in the end.

I honestly think that dany changes so much throughout the show and - especially with her ridiculously rushed turn to the mad side of the Targaryen coin - it’s hard to classify her as a villain or hero. She earned names like great mother and breaker of chains for a reason but so did she deserve the name mad queen. She freed many in Essos and played a massive part in saving Westeros and defeating the night king, yet all she ever got in return was hatred and pain. If George R R Martin would finish the books, he prbly would even make her madness understandable I reckon

@comeatmebro8120 I'd say he's a tragic protagonist rather than a villain. Tragic because he stood essentially no chance at victory and had to turn to the witch (melisandre) for her power and she then corrupted him. If these minor characters had more screen time, then other major plot points/important characters, would be rushed. There's only so much time in an episode. 35: Smalljon Umber deserved the absolute bottom spot because in the novels, he died like a badass trying to save Robb during the Red Wedding 31: Olly is a cheap stand-in for Satin from the books, who was cut because an underage boy sex worker is too much even for HBO 22: In the novels it's pretty clear that Drogo ripping the bandage off is what led to his death 20: Locke is a cheap stand-in for Vargo Hoat from the novels. He's such a different character that GRRM made them change his name (back when he cared about such things) 12: I'm still partial to the theory that the High Sparrow is Howland Reed 11: If you know what to look for, Roose was hedging his bets against Robb from the very start 7: The biggest irony is that Alliser was sent to the Wall because he was a Targaryen loyalist on the losing end of Robert's Rebellion, and died not knowing Jon was Rhaegar's son
@DJYungHoxha7 ай бұрын
Seems to me like you're following the logic of "If it's different from the book, it's bad", which is a very disagreeable position to take. Vargo Hoat is such an exotic character that would hint at a much more interconnected and larger world than what we are getting in the show. The change to make him into a fellow northerner makes him feel more grounded in Westerosi civilisation.

Great video! I think you could have put in a few others that were villains for a time, because their screen time and impact as villains is more than some of the minor villains you included in the video: Melisandre - Her arc after season 5 was a little too quick imo, but I remember in seasons 2-5 she being the villain I hated the most. I mean, she did give birth to a literal murderous demon. Jamie - His first seasons he was the perfect evil Prince Charming. Theon - His villain arc was not as respectable but his impact was there and he had a good amount of screen time. I would put Styr (25) a bit higher (15-20). You gave him a lot of deserved praise. I’d switch him with Randyll Tarly (19). Also Meryn Trant (29) definitely deserves to be higher. He was a minor antagonist but was on Arya’s list for a reason. His scenes in the brothel were so gross and evil. I’d put him around 15. Loved all your explanations!

Tywin, Cersei and Jofferey were all equally despicable and outstandingly well acted but were at the mercy of other villains. Ramsay answered to no one once he killed his dad so he litteraly did what he wanted which made him unpredictable. With the little time that Ramsay had in the series he was completely unhinged and the most terrifying villain in my opinion. Jofferey was an asshole bully that tormented people and occasionally killed people when his temper flared but he was a weak mamas boy who got slapped around by Tyrion. Ramsay murdered his own father, killed people for fun and literally fed his stepmother and her baby to his dogs. He violated Sansa, he even broke Theon to the point that he couldn’t respond to his own name, and killed Rickon in front of John. Even before he was ripped apart by his dogs he never gave Sansa the satisfaction of begging for his life. Man was just pure diabolical

Ramsay is my favorite. Unlike Joffrey he was willing to get his hands dirty, he wasn't a spoiled kid but a bastard who would do anything to earn his place. Also I think his death was perfect, died violently as he lived. I loved his relationship with Myranda for the same reasons you mentioned, and the fact that in the end he decides to feed her to his dogs seems insensitive but I think it was a significant act for him and they let us see a little bit of his "human" side. Every scene he was in was fun and entertaining, which I also thought with Viserys, except that Ramsey wasn't a ridiculous looking villain but more like charismatic and intriguing. Great video and I like that you included Tanner and Styr. Those actors nailed it too

David and Dan took the credit for the work that was done by the writer. You watch the show and then you read the book and realize the plot and the good things came from the writer. This might be controversial - but I think Ramsay is incredibly overrated. Personally I never found him very terryfying or intimidating, except for some of his earlier moments with Theon/Reek. Overall I think he's kind of annoying. He should not be higher than Cersei or Littlefinger. I also don't quite understand why he is described as "unpredictable". He's one of the most obvious batshit crazy characters in the show. When he's being nice you can see that it's fake.

I disagree wholeheartedly. What makes Ramsay great and what makes him different from the other insane villain (Joffrey) is that Ramsay is extremely intelligent and calculated. Joffrey acts on emotions almost exclusively, while Ramsay almost always have a grand and devious plan. Both are great in their own right but Ramsay comes out on top for me becuse of that element of calculation and thought disguised as unpredictability. And don’t get me started on Cersei. She was a great Villain in s1-4, she was alright in 5-6, but then she became so bland and one dimensional that I couldn’t for the life of me understand HOW she became the final boss of the show.
