Bad brakes are scary but with time you will gain more skills and confidence. eventually ...Good luck and keep practicing. Massive amounts of practice and seat time will enable your true skillset. Sram uses Dot 4/5.1. If it gets too hot it can boil (even if it's new brake fluid, it just needs more temperature) and your brake is gone. Mineral oil don't boil, as long as there is no water in the system (the oil won't boil, but water still could of course). The pads will burn off before the rest of the brake fails if a mineral oil brake is well maintained

That's why I don't trust disk brakes I was going super fast down a mountain road for over ten minutes. Passing cars n stuff. At the end of the descent right before it started to get flat, my front brake became useless in a matter of seconds. Thankfully had my rear brake. When checking the bike out I was dumb enough to touch the rotor, burnt my finger. The rotor turned blue/purplish. I really do not know if it's the brakes' fault for not handling 10+ minutes of real fast downhill with lots of braking or mine for overcooking it. For now I'm happy with my V-brakes!

There is an old way add additional braking power - use legs to have additional friction, but i am not sure, if its good idea, cause here is very narrow handling section, its harder to balance, cause its problem to find pedals back, but i would start to friction with legs anyway, if feel something off with my brakes. Less speed - less damage even on collision. If your friction on foot is stable - just stand a bit a drop a bike

This exact thing happened to me, I used to ride when I was younger so when a friend of mine came to visit from overseas we decided to go do one of those trail ebike tours. We hadn't even gotten out of the starter area and I mentioned to our guide that the brakes don't feel right. He assured me that there was nothing wrong and that I wasn't using them correctly and telling me about how the bike uses disk brakes rather than rim brakes blah blah so I took his word for it but I never felt comfortable on the bike. Fast forward to me almost going right off a drop cause I couldn't slow down enough to make the turn. I just trusted the guide and assumed the equipment was maintained well since it was a pretty pricy tour and my lack of knowledge since I haven't ridden a bike in over 10 years. Whenever your get a gut feeling, just listen
