At my last job I was given a probationary strike(3 you’re out). It was the “3rd” one but by mistake. We are supposed to sign each occurrence and I only ever received 2. However, I despised that job and it took almost all my willpower not to hide my smile that I could still get fired. I understand the sentiment though, but in my particular instance I would have rather worked some grimy under the table warehouse job.

After a decade of work experience, I realized that your coworkers are never your friends. When my coworkers quit or got laid off, I still reached out to them to see how they were doing but I got ignored and when I got fired, everyone who were so friendly to me suddenly treated me as if I had the plague. Also, the fear of losing your job and the age discrimination made me start thinking. The system is designed to create "fearful obedient slaves". I too seen it in my workplaces, I however never gave a damn and always spoke my mind and defended fellow colleagues from being bullied by their manager in a humorous way. The managers didn't like me at all and would stay out my way and I was nicknamed as a "troublemaker". The day I got fired, no one stood up for me, I expected it so it wasn't a shock for me at all. There's more to life brother. I started my first full time job (in a Fortune 500 company) in 2010, I was 26 and before that I’d been a student and travelled the world teaching English, lived abroad etc. There was a lot of pressure on me to “grow up” and “get a proper job”. I lasted only two years before I had a breakdown and went off sick for two months with burnout. I remember it was an open plan office with fluorescent lights, no natural daylight, no fresh air, constant noise and phones ringing 8-10 hours a day, stressful deadlines, endless meetings… Hell on earth for me. Everyone treated me like I was mentally ill for not being able to live like that. I thought there was something wrong with me too because I hated it so much. I tried for 10 years to be okay with it. I remember people being made redundant and wishing I was one of them. I’ve never been fired but in a way I wish I had because maybe it would have given me the impetus to do something else with my life instead of just grinding on. I was in shock and then they setup a 'going away' party for me toward the end of the month like I was leaving for another job. I call the number and he and some people from HR were on the line to tell me the news.

The last one actually got really panicked and afraid that I would go to a lawyer. But everytime I was really happy to not have a reason to go to work anymore. I live a lonely and isolated life. I'm not hedonistic and don't care for materialism. I have nothing from my job other my allowance to pay rent and not land on the streets. Also I can't seem to find a partner, since you have to appear like you got it all figured out, which I don't. While I do prefer living with my wife, I wouldnt say its a perfect relationship. so its important to keep things like that in mind. But bottom line, I dont have it all figured out.

Great video. I was fired when I was 23 from my first engineering job at no fault of my own. I was the last person they hired. I joined in June and before Christmas I was gone. Still had 7 months of a lease left to pay an no income. The first 4 hours after getting fired was just shock. The next 2 weeks was pure elation I never had to go back. I was abused verbally everyday and was given the hardest possible physical labor despite being an engineer with a degree. I built pumps weighing over 100 lbs, I pushed part carts that were so heavy I had to put my full body weight into just to get them to roll. I sorted parts while kneeling on the concrete for hours at a time. I felt like I aged 30 years in those 5 months and I did it for $40k/year and no time off. Getting fired was a blessing and it lifted a massive weight off my chest. I laugh about how much of a circus that place was and I make almost double what I did and it’s only been 2 years since then. Never settle. You are always worth it. Never take a counteroffer. Never look back.

The style of laying off people over Zoom is so crazy. I agree, companies are entities that has no respect or loyalty to their employees.

I am 43 years of age. Retired a few years ago, and now I work for myself when I want. Investing a huge part of my wage/salary also got me there. I am sorry that they had a farewell send off for you. That is only meant to happen if you choose to leave on your own accord. We are just numbers to these companies.

Can you share your investment strategy?

like I said, it wasn't for me. it was just to keep the charade. you are right, we are just numbers. I have read many KPI reports at many companies. People are being reduced to numbers. its that simple.

@@realfreedom8932 I held a property for 16 years, and sold out last year. And I currently invest in Vanguard index trackers, with a bit of crypto on the side. Good luck.

How did you keep from screaming out that you were fired- that the cake and party was all a huge lie? What could they do, fire you?

Thanks for sharing your story; I know this story too well. I also enjoyed college and excelled on hard work, but also design talent. In college, I felt like I was in control of my destiny. The deadlines and objectives were clear, AND fair - unlike so many jobs in the corporate world. After finishing grad school, I landed a job in architecture that I was super excited about, but it turned out I was working for a tyrant. I left after 2 1/4 years. My co-workers wondered why I stayed that long. Landed a couple good jobs after that and stayed 5 and 4 1/2 years, respectively, but then the 2008 recession hit, and everything changed. Got laid off, and it was no longer about getting ahead, it was about survival. I changed careers to a related field in 2010 (and then switched back to architecture in 2016), but since then there's never been a "good fit" job, and I've never felt my job was secure beyond a few months ahead. So it's been two year stints on average since 2010, where I've moved on on my own, or got laid off a couple times. It sucks having to live and work with this mentality - feeling like I have to be "on the move", or ready to be on the move, at all times - but the good thing is that I've achieved some finacial security over the years.

thanks for sharing your story and experience. You are like me, one of the victims of 2008. :) Im glad to hear that the experience have made you financially "smarter". most people who havent been through that live on loans.

I once had a job that was so terrible that being layed of was good for my health. BUT - and this is really a problem - I was unemployed for 5 years before finding another job. That experience was even worse.

I’ve been working in finance for the past 10 years, and everyone I know who has been fired (not reorganized or pushed out) has deserved it. I couldn’t imagine having a party or protesting the firing of someone who did a terrible job and made life harder for everyone else they worked with. Also, I do not view my corporation as “family” and my colleagues aren’t my “friends.” I get paid to go and produce… Nothing more nothing less. Lastly, if you up-skill and keep current with what the labor market demands you’ll find yourself with the ability to pick and chose your jobs… I, for example, have a BS, MBA, and 4 certifications. I’m working towards my 5th. I have no fear (at the moment) about my career because I’ve insulated myself… Mind you, I’m in my mid 40s. It’s better to look internally to fix yourself than externally to blame everyone else for your misfortune.

Another advantage of sub-contracting is that you become hardened to losing your job. Most contracts last 6 months to 2 years so you get used to changing employer and surviving without income for a few months. One of the main things you can do is to stock up on food so when you need to cut back spending you have all your essentials that makes surviving on no money coming in much easier. Owning your car outright is another advantage where you dont see hundreds of pounds didssapearing from you account while looking for the next opportunity

Was fired from my last career as a Quality manager for 10 years. I have struggled to survive ever since and its been 6 years now. The assh**e that fired me got fired a few years later and he got an even better paying job. This life is not fair and just sucks.
@TomScryleus10 ай бұрын
that sucks. Im sorry to hear that you are struggling. Life isn't fair, and I often say, why do we think it should be, after all, it never has been. hope things turn around for you. I think 2024 will be your year! :)

This is a response to the person that said that once they realize you're leaving, people start to distance from you. I had the opposite experience. People coming to ME and said they are looking for another job because they are planning to leave the company because they don't want to be treated the same way after I left. It was an environment that went from one person to the next..They felt helpless, just like me. My last day was during the first week of DEC...I NEVER got an invite to the xmas party...until they realized so many people weren't going to show up...so I get this email asking me to come..it was 4PM THE DAY OF!.. I was there for 8 years.

The last corporate job I had was at a place that fired me after telling me several times that I had great ideas and were all excited about hiring me… and then the people who had me fired were all fired by the company that eventually bought them after I was fired. Lol. A-holes

If the corporate entity were to be represented as a physical concept in a museum, it would look like a twisted, tormented, toxic, soul devouring petulant demon that is eternally hungry and never satiated.

Preach! I liked my last job because it was remote, gave great time flexibility (1 hr lunch and 4.5 work days instead of 5), and good benefits WITHOUT that office BS. They laid me off like a POS but there was not any real loss with virtual coworkers. I'll be happy with the prospect of constantly switching jobs and fields and even take the occasional time off for van travel and cross country hiking in the future.

I spent most of my life working 9-5 jobs and felt trapped. I got laid off when my company who I worked for 10 years at fired many of us to save money and make others work twice as hard. That moment was the making of me, I learned to be a journalist, went freelance, and now I contract to others and WFH. Would never go back to corporate work.
