With the attitude of the Romans at that time, their own command system, and their hubris? I'd say this was inevitable seeing as this almost caused Rome to collapse. But because of how they Romans were structured, culturally, after the battle they came out on top, even if battered and bruised to high hell

Roman deaths were higher than 40,000. Livvy claimed 48,200, Polibius 70,000. Rome lost more men in 90 minutes in that battle than Canada lost in all of WW2.

It's hard to get exact numbers from an event that happened 2000 years ago, but it's suffice to say that many tens of thousands died in a matter of hours. That should be shocking enough.
