This performance just doesn't look right at all. TP's team UAE (formerly Lampre) have a terrible doping history, that they have 2 managers in Gianetti and Matxin with a history of 7 riders in teams they managed banned for doping and then 2019 Aderlass blood doping scandal - UAE rider Durasek was banned for 4 years the ring covered several sports and in cycling centred on Austrian and Slovenian riders - no one failed a dope test or had dubious `biological passport' it was a whistleblower who exposed the scandal, so doping is happening in cycling as a proven fact and dope testing can't catch the cheats. Would have loved to see how today would have gone if there hadn't been crashes in the early stages, and if the likes of Bernal and Landa (maybe even Remco) were here in form. Yes, Pogacar is dropping the field, but who is he actually dropping that's surprising? Given the race circumstances and all that's happened up to now, who do we expect to be able to compete with him? Before the tour, I (and every bookie) expected Roglic and Pogacar to be a level above the rest just like last year, with their closest rival being Thomas. Thomas looked out of sorts from stage 1, and crashed, and Carapaz was never really expected to be on the Pogacar/Roglic level IMHO, and he's had to work harder than Pogacar over the last few days, especially yesterday. Also have to factor in that Pogacar hasn't crashed (as far as I know). Looking at all of that, his performance isn't that unexpected, even though it is amazing. It's also only stage 8.... I'm having flash backs of the 2018 Giro where Yates dominated everyone for 18 days, and then mega-cracked and lost it all.

This is different. Pogacar has proven to be the biggest climbing talent in a long time. And in this tour de France he is competing against people who crashed, had an injury before the tour (van Aert) , or people like Lutsenko, who are great riders but aren't climbing god's. We expected a bit more from Carapaz but he blew himself up trying to follow Pogacar and blowing up 30km from the line in a mountain stage isn't a good idea.

Pogacar reminds me of a young Bernard Hinault, back in the early days of Hinault's career when he was precociously talented across every discipline required to be a legendary professional road cyclist. After winning two TDF's in 78 and 79, A knee injury hampered Hinault's 1980 TDF campaign but it's OK.... he won Liège-Bastogne-Liège, the Giro and the World Championship instead. If Pogacar has a sense of history he'll try and replicate that, LOL. He certainly has the talent to do it.

Haven't seen a show or force and overwhelming superiority like this in the Tour since Armstrong and Contador. Which is why the doubts come in. You see that raw power, climbing a HC mountain on his heaviest gear. While you're admiring that live, on tv, an image of Lance Armstrong, Alberto Contador, Rasmussen and others pop into your head. Not because you suspect Pogacar. But because what you're seeing reminds you of something you already saw a few times. The brain makes a connection and now you're stuck with that thought.

I couldn't help thinking this dominant performance resembles that of Usain Bolt at track & field, or Phelps at swimming. Suspecting is the reasonable thing to do, but it could truly be that these are Future Level athletes. I'd like to emphasize that, among Pogacar set of skills, he's got the Cat-like ability not to fall down; something many (GC) riders seem to lack.
@mumofbrunodog3 жыл бұрын
Yes and also he seems to be very astute in communicating with his (limited) team, measuring his racing and closing down attacks like he did today. Ineos tried to sneak in with UAE at one point (maybe Tao?) and he immediately put himself in front of them as if to say - NO - I’m in control. He seems very mature and confident.

This is good tactic. Make big difference ASAP do dangerous ‘tactical’ team games cant work anymore. One another such escape and Pog will have to care only for 5 GC, because all others will be back 10min+. Who care then, that UAE team us not the strongest and cant chase outbreaks. Even with slow ride they will be under 10 minutes behind

It’s inevitable. My guess is he’s taking something. Not even because of his performance today but because I simply suspect all pro athletes period. Follow the money. @@DBxCooper I think the same, but in some sports, doping is much more regulated and it's really hard to get away with it. Cycling is one of those sports. Not saying Pog is clean but it's very tough to get around randomized testing.

But Pogačar is a great talent since he was a teenager and has been riding amazing since the Vuelta 2019. I mean, if he is using doping, he is doing it for quite a long time. Today's performance is not suprising considering the weak competition and the performances he is having since the beggining of the season. No one knows if he is clean or not, but I am much more suscipious of riders that "all of a sudden" have great performances or that when they are 25y or 26y "all of a sudden" become GC contenders. Pogačar is being consistent since a young age and for a long time.

Im trying not to be naive but how the race plays out must be taken into consideration. We have been so used to noone attaching before the last mountain. Then this kind of performance is impossible. But the field breaks up so early the riders are also more isolated and the individual skills are more exposed. If you send the riders out on a TT for the entire stange it would be normal with huge gaps. The individual differences would come out much more. When the field explodes early like today i belive thats what happens. He used a long time to get this time advantage.
@13redlion133 жыл бұрын
@@pal_lokomotivet2679 Just from a strategic point of view Pogacars attack is very credible, attacking with 2 climbs to go, less than 40 kms to go, and only descents in between and no teammates to help the other favourites is legit. It's not some ridiculous shit like Landis' attack. But while the climbing times individually are not necessarily from another world, it is still over a minute faster on both climbs combined than the Schleck Contador trio who also battled it out on both climbs and that after one or two really hard days where he already did some efforts himself to keep some riders from going into the breakaway. Then again Schleck and Contador had the stage in the 3rd week which might also lead to slower times.
