In the early days, George Martin was the adult in the room, and The Beatles would come to understand how great a blessing that was.
@MarkRoberts-bj2me13 күн бұрын
According to Lewisohn, Martin never wanted to record The Beatles initially. That was the intital reaction by almost all adults except Brian Epstein. "But there was something in there worth listening to" is total and complete horse manure. Martin was forced to schedule a studio sesion after he had refused them a recording contract by the original owners of the copyright to "Love Me Do" who happened to wield some power in the London music scene. They obtained the first Parlophone session for the boys through Martin. Martin was not even present during that session until an assistant he had assigned to get the thing over with came running to Martin informing him he better come and listen. Martin insisted The Beatles record "How Do You Do What You Do To Me" as their first single and told them to work up a version. The Beatles insisted on "Love Me Do" an original. Martin would not even double-track John so he could properly sing lead as well as play his mouth organ. Consequently, the world heard an inferior version with Paul singing lead although he has said this caught him totally by surprise and he considers his own vocal rendition inferior. Gerry and the Pacemakers would take HDYDWYDTM to #1 although The Beatles version is far superior. Never forget, the acknowledged musical genius was John Winston Lennon (the main composer of several masterpieces, best R & R singer of all time and an extremely underrated and gifted rhythm guitarist) and although Martin came up with some production ideas of note, The Beatles were the artists. Their music changed the culture of the world which is why they are still acknowledged as the #1 Pop/Rock group of all time 55 years after they broke up.

Things were very different in those days you must remember. The record companies held all the cards till The Beatles came along. Even The Beatles knew that. If you wanted a recording contract you played by their rules. The suites and ties they wore to recording sessions in the early days reflected their recognition of the studios status. They weren't there to challenge it. It wasn't until they had success as recording artists that they became more independent, they had become aware of their worth to the the recording company. It was a new discovery for the record company as well they'd never dealt with a cash cow the likes of The Beatles before and they wanted to keep them happy so indulge them a little. If they're a little unpredictable and ignore the rules so what just keep them churning out those records! Both sides were learning new ways of doing things. George Martin was good for The Beatles and The Beatles were good for George Martin. It was a successful partnership.

Martin did some amazing work on some of the Beatle songs after they started working solely in the studio. I love 'I am the Walrus', but when Lennon presented Martin with a first draft, there was virtually no melody to it. 'Strawberry Fields', 'Lucy in the Sky', most of 'Sgt. Pepper' all owe a lot to Martin.
@stayclean77714 күн бұрын
George Martin told the story of when John first introduced his new song Strawberry Fields in the studio, just accompanying himself with an acoustic guitar. George said he'd always kicked himself for not recording it, it was so beautiful. As a matter of fact, "Walrus" and "Lucy" also came into the studio melodies intact, as the outtakes show, before they were dressed up w/production. Lucy in particular sounds great played on just an acoustic guitar.
@dannyvine360513 күн бұрын
As stayclean has mentioned your facts are incorrect. All Martin added to I Am The Walrus was the orchestration which he worked on with Lennon at Lennons Surrey home. In fact Lennon sang a guiding vocal (the melody) to help the others master the song. All the songs on Sgt Pepper had melodies prior to the studio and Martin first hearing them.

2014 was an interesting year for me personally regarding these German translations of the Beatles. That year, I was drafted into a New York underground-based cover band called The Meetles. At the end of one Sunday night when I wasn't playing but showed up to listen, they played "I Want to Hold Your Hand" which they always closed with - and I started singing "Kom gib mir deina han" off to the side. The leader (whose name is also Eric) started ribbing me for it. That was Circa March. About 2 months later, I was in a private singing workshop in a friend's apartment and tried my hand at singing the full-length version of that translation. It was kind of surreal.

George Martin was not always "steadfast" in sticking by The Beatles. During the making of the White Album he was so upset with the band that he went on holiday, leaving his new assistant, Chris Thomas (later to produce 'Never Mind The Bollocks', and Pretenders, among many others) to supposedly produce the band. I am not blaming George Martin here - just saying that he was needed less and less as Paul, George and John had learned how to make records, that tension often arose between all parties. Their (then) main recording engineer, Geoff Emerick, felt things were so strained that he quit engineering for the band, also during the making of the White Album (although he retuned later).

George with The Beatles was similar to Galton and Simpson with T Hancock.

I have read that Martin never really benifited financially from their success.I have no idea if this was true,amongst so many untruths around this group.

I wonder if this story was an influence on the Rutles scandalous love of tea. And biscuits.

Without George Martin ,the Beatles would be playing in a pub

You portray George Martin in this video as if this scenario was in an episode of The Crown or another period drama, such as Lord John Grey in Outlander. 😆 "You really are Bastards, aren't you?", cried out Martin, incredulousy exasperated, half laughing, half serious, doing his best to retain his anger. The Beatles ran about like school boys in a scene of pure farce, a humorous footnote in their career.

The Beatles weren't anyone's employees.

Many artists in these days recorded versions of their best songs in several languages. It is not funny that the Beatles produced two songs in German. It's funny that it was only two and that they never did French, Spanisch and Italian versions.

They did the same thing with Pete Best, not surprising.

The assumption that Germans in the 60s didn't speak English is nonsense. At that time West Germany was crawling with US military and English was taught in the schools. My guess is that the band knew this.

4:00 *WRONG!* EMI's German subsidiary was, in fact *Electrola GmbH!* Odeon was merely one of the labels. Odeon served as the German and French equivalent of Parlophone. GmbH stood for *Gesellschaft mit beschrankte Haftung,* or in English, Society with limited holdings.
