Dbacks fan here, a major clarification is needed: They're not planning on leaving Arizona. They are considering leaving Phoenix (the city), there are several different cities that are functionally suburbs of Phoenix but are still a part of the Phoenix metropolitan area. The local government is hostile to sports teams (see the current debacle with the Coyotes in the NHL). The county owns the stadium, and the Dbacks lease it out. The county has done a very poor job at maintaining the stadium (during monsoon season it's not uncommon to see the roof leaking onto the field, and last season the roof was forced to remain closed due to safety reasons). Think of it as a landlord refusing to fix your apartment's roof leak and demanding you just live with it or fix it yourself.

The stadium bullshit that is happening with MLB/NFL teams is absolutely baffling for a European. Most of our sports teams not only OWN their stadiums, they either built them on their own or bought them from the city. Blackmailing cities and states into wasting tax payer money on their silly prestige projects, when the teams keep the money for themselves (economic advantages from teams or stadiums have proven to be pure fiction in other cases). It should be illegal to subsidize teams and stadiums in in this way when the teams are able to spend hundreds of millions on player contracts.

I went to Chase to watch the Dodgers clinch in 2022. Not sure how true this is but talked to an employee at the stadium (who was a Dodgers fan lol) and he told me that polling showed over 80% fans in Pheonix are fans of other teams besides the Dbacks
@Darbobski
@Darbobski 8 ай бұрын
@PresidentDennis That makes sense. There were many baseball fans in AZ before they had their own team. Baseball fans tend to be pretty loyal, so the ones that already had favorite teams likely stuck with them. It takes years to establish a strong fan base. I grew up watching the Brewers and can attest that they struggled to pull in crowds until they started playing quality ball in the early 80s. Even then, a lot of older people remained Braves fans.

Current owners that can't afford these stadiums should consider selling. If you were an MLB owner back when teams and stadiums cost a few hundred million dollars you probably can't afford to still be an owner when the costs are in the billions. Sell the team for a profit and let ownership groups that can afford private financing takeover. Sure, it's not a romantic view of sports. See The Premier League to see how insane ownership groups with unlimited money can go wrong, but it is realistic. They public can't bail out teams over and over again.
@bigsav1984
@bigsav1984 8 ай бұрын
I’m sure the ownership group can afford to renovate the stadium privately, they may have to take out some loans but the cash flow is there. It’s more a case these millionaire and billionaires are trying to milk the government to cover the costs for them and threaten to move to accomplish it. The only way to stop this nonsense is for all cities to not give in but that is sadly impossible.

No, it is clickbait and it is a nothing story. The diamondbacks want to stay in az, the city of Phoenix want to keep the diamondbacks in az, it is just that the owner ken kendrick was sad that they have not gotten the new deal for their lease at chase field yet, he was specifically asked about the situation so he answered honestly which is that one day waaaaay down the line maybe they wont he in phoenix anymore and that was less of a "yes we are moving" and more of a "it probably will not come to that but it is a possibility"

As a marlins fan I know we’re among the next 3 to move besides the dbacks and A’s. Once marlins park is considered old it’s over. After you give people 20+ years of playoff less baseball why expect people to come? Imagine starting a new sport in a new market and then going almost more than 20 years without playoffs. I don’t blame anyone for not going. The rays are a completely different story. The rays are very popular but getting to the field is an absolute unmitigated nightmare/disaster.

He's not pretending he's poor at all. He's openly said he will spend multiple hundreds of millions of dollars on a stadium he doesn't even own. At some point, as a commercial tenant, the team has to draw a line in the sand. It might be cheaper or more financially feasible, long term, to privately build a stadium somewhere else or work with a city on a redevelopment project that would include team ownership in exchange for economic investment.

A few things going against Kendrick. 1st he has 0 leverage. His hope was to use another Valley city like Tempe or Mesa to give him money and use it as a threat to move there, but after Tempe voters voted no to a new arena last year, he knew that wouldn’t work. He then thought he could go to a city interested in expansion. He saw how easy it was to pass it through the Nevada legislature, but now with the lawsuits and ballot measures he knows public money in other cities won’t work either. The main reason Arizona doesn’t want to give the Diamondbacks money is Kendricks isn’t looking for money for capital improvements. He is looking for money for development outside the ballpark. That is a private venture. He should be going to private equity for that money. His final issue is that in 1998 when the ballpark was built most of Arizona was natives. Today much of Arizona residents are transplants from California. They have seen all their cathedrals built with private money and know the same thing can be done in Phoenix.

The city as a whole in Phoenix does not care at all about the DBacks. I was glad to see them make it that far last season, rooted for them when they won the 2001 World Series. Phoenix is a melting pot of people mostly from California, Oregon, Colorado, Utah, Washington St., New Mexico and the Midwest. Which means they have a very low local fan base and their stadium sits mostly empty throughout the season. The seats only fill up if the team is really winning or in the series like last year, the city does not advertise the team around the city, hardly any billboards, hardly and posters, commercials, gear being sold at stores. They are almost non existent in Phoenix Metro. Nobody talks about or even cares about sports in Phoenix, the pro teams have a very small fan base and mostly people attend games to see the away teams of their original home town, just look at when the Cardinals play the 49ers or Cowboys or Seahawks or Packers and I can keep going on and on. The Coyotes NHL team does not have a stadium and this looks just like that same scenario, so I would tell DBacks fans look what happened to the Chargers in San Diego, same thing can happen to the DBacks.

As an Arizona Native, I can say with certainty that Arizona sports is cursed. Always a bridesmaid and never a bride, we have the one and only ring in 2001 but I was 2 so. The cards lost the superbowl, the suns lost the finals l, and the dbacks lost the world series. The suns also got screwed over a couple times too.

The owner keeps making this threat. Maybe stop being the biggest doner to a political party in the state and pay for it yourself then ask the tax payers of Maricopa county. Don't want to use your own money, maybe you could ask the bank, who's name is on the stadium.

They just got a field in the LATE 90s. What's wrong with the field? Its one thing to fix safety issues and maintain the facilities - that should never require outside funding. if it does & you cant get it immediately, you should be forced to sell the team. Other than that you are just being greedy, narcissistic owners. The A's have to leave Oakland because it's Oakland! Anyone that doesnt understand that has never been there before. It's a crime ridden, drug infested, homeless encampment. Its bizarre to me that MLB didnt get the A's relocated to a temporary market years ago when it became apparent Oakland was a wasteland.

Literally no County in Arizona wants to fund Stadiums, look at the Coyotes alone, heck the Cardinals are gonna be a NIGHTMARE when they want like 1.5 billion for a new stadium. Arizona is mainly a golfing town. Not many retiree's are Arizona fans, they retire in Arizona with other teams they already cheering for. The City and State would be wise to give little to nothing. Billionaires should have to pay for THEIR toys.

Going by the announced attendance at each game for the 2023 NLCS the Phillies averaged almost 43,000 per game in attendance and the Dbacks averaged a little over 49,000... Sooo the Dbacks averaged a little over 6,000 more fans per game than the Phillies.

Because the city OWNS THE DAMN STADIUM, therefore the taxpayers essentially own the stadium.

Let them leave. Az taxpayer here, I would rather put the money somewhere else. 20 for a beer, 30 dollars for parking, 10 dollars for a bottle of water. 200 dollars for a shirt. Las Vegas Diamondbacks..priceless. pay the players a little less and let the billionaire buy his own stadium. It's a tax right off for him.
