Dbacks fan here, a major clarification is needed: They're not planning on leaving Arizona. They are considering leaving Phoenix (the city), there are several different cities that are functionally suburbs of Phoenix but are still a part of the Phoenix metropolitan area. The local government is hostile to sports teams (see the current debacle with the Coyotes in the NHL). The county owns the stadium, and the Dbacks lease it out. The county has done a very poor job at maintaining the stadium (during monsoon season it's not uncommon to see the roof leaking onto the field, and last season the roof was forced to remain closed due to safety reasons). Think of it as a landlord refusing to fix your apartment's roof leak and demanding you just live with it or fix it yourself.

The stadium bullshit that is happening with MLB/NFL teams is absolutely baffling for a European. Most of our sports teams not only OWN their stadiums, they either built them on their own or bought them from the city. Blackmailing cities and states into wasting tax payer money on their silly prestige projects, when the teams keep the money for themselves (economic advantages from teams or stadiums have proven to be pure fiction in other cases). It should be illegal to subsidize teams and stadiums in in this way when the teams are able to spend hundreds of millions on player contracts.

@PresidentDennis That makes sense. There were many baseball fans in AZ before they had their own team. Baseball fans tend to be pretty loyal, so the ones that already had favorite teams likely stuck with them. It takes years to establish a strong fan base. Current owners that can't afford these stadiums should consider selling. If you were an MLB owner back when teams and stadiums cost a few hundred million dollars you probably can't afford to still be an owner when the costs are in the billions. Sell the team for a profit and let ownership groups that can afford private financing takeover. Sure, it's not a romantic view of sports. See The Premier League to see how insane ownership groups with unlimited money can go wrong, but it is realistic. They public can't bail out teams over and over again.
@bigsav19848 ай бұрын
I’m sure the ownership group can afford to renovate the stadium privately, they may have to take out some loans but the cash flow is there. It’s more a case these millionaire and billionaires are trying to milk the government to cover the costs for them and threaten to move to accomplish it. A few things going against Kendrick. 1st he has 0 leverage. His hope was to use another Valley city like Tempe or Mesa to give him money and use it as a threat to move there, but after Tempe voters voted no to a new arena last year, he knew that wouldn’t work. He then thought he could go to a city interested in expansion. He saw how easy it was to pass it through the Nevada legislature, but now with the lawsuits and ballot measures he knows public money in other cities won’t work either. The main reason Arizona doesn’t want to give the Diamondbacks money is Kendricks isn’t looking for money for capital improvements. He is looking for money for development outside the ballpark. That is a private venture. He should be going to private equity for that money. His final issue is that in 1998 when the ballpark was built most of Arizona was natives. Today much of Arizona residents are transplants from California. They have seen all their cathedrals built with private money and know the same thing can be done in Phoenix.

The city as a whole in Phoenix does not care at all about the DBacks. I was glad to see them make it that far last season, rooted for them when they won the 2001 World Series. Phoenix is a melting pot of people mostly from California, Oregon, Colorado, Utah, Washington St., New Mexico and the Midwest. Which means they have a very low local fan base and their stadium sits mostly empty throughout the season. The seats only fill up if the team is really winning or in the series like last year, the city does not advertise the team around the city, hardly any billboards, hardly and posters, commercials, gear being sold at stores. They are almost non existent in Phoenix Metro. Nobody talks about or even cares about sports in Phoenix, the pro teams have a very small fan base and mostly people attend games to see the away teams of their original home town, just look at when the Cardinals play the 49ers or Cowboys or Seahawks or Packers and I can keep going on and on. The Coyotes NHL team does not have a stadium and this looks just like that same scenario, so I would tell DBacks fans look what happened to the Chargers in San Diego, same thing can happen to the DBacks.

And how many more fans were at the Phillies home games in the NLCS? A mive might be good for them
@mcigloo8 ай бұрын
Going by the announced attendance at each game for the 2023 NLCS the Phillies averaged almost 43,000 per game in attendance and the Dbacks averaged a little over 49,000... Sooo the Dbacks averaged a little over 6,000 more fans per game than the Phillies.

Why do taxpayers need to refurb the field at all
@nfamus5408 ай бұрын
Because the city OWNS THE DAMN STADIUM, therefore the taxpayers essentially own the stadium.
@iamtomb19718 ай бұрын
Let them leave. Az taxpayer here, I would rather put the money somewhere else. 20 for a beer, 30 dollars for parking, 10 dollars for a bottle of water. 200 dollars for a shirt. Las Vegas Diamondbacks..priceless. pay the players a little less and let the billionaire buy his own stadium. It's a tax right off for him.
@anthonys36317 ай бұрын
They are leaving. I'm up in Vancouver and am told via prominent business folks here they are on the move up north to Vancouver. Stay tuned.

The ownership group is lying they want to develop the land around a stadium

Sounds like a capitalist isn't so good at capitalism. If you want public funds and don't have any private offers, give the public a certain percent of ownership in the team for public funds.

Chase field is fine as it is. This is a grift by greedy owners. The city needs to call their bs because they don’t have anywhere else better to go.
