Don’t they already have clauses like that? I’m not sure if I’d be okay with that as a player because what will fit within the definition of “awful”? I wouldn’t want my boss deciding whether or not to pay me based on if they approve of my life decisions. Criminal acts should void contracts. Hypothetical: a player expresses a political or social opinion the team execs do not agree with. They deem that opinion “awful” and void the contract. A clause like what you’re suggesting seems like something that would be abused

They already do. “Guaranteed” money is never actually 100% guaranteed. The contracts have clauses in them that basically state that if the player consciously engages in activity that directly compromises the success and business of the organization, the contract can then be voided. Committing crimes like statutory rape, lewdness with a minor, and likely even sex trafficking since he was paying money to keep the relationship going, that very clearly hurts the organization, and because of that once Franco is formally convicted and sentenced, the Rays will almost surely have no problem voiding the contract. The San Jose Sharks were able to void a guaranteed contract with a player (Evander Kane) a couple years ago because he was engaging in behavior that was deemed as actively detrimental to the success of the franchise.

I'm an American living in the Dominican Republic and this is, sadly, not a surprising story. Young baseball players who have signed any amount of a contract, come back here and live like gods. Think about Tatis and the motorcycle accidents he got in during the off season and the tragic deaths of Yorlando Ventura and Oscar Tavares in 2017. They're young, rich and stupid who come home to show off their new found riches. On top of this, poor parents do whatever they can to get their kids to "advance" and sex with rich adult men is not too uncommon.

The only way you can come close to distinguishing their age is by actually talking to them, and observing their maturity level. Even then, it’s still hard. Young attractive woman and teens all do the same thing nowadays. Tik Toking, making selfies, and putting their bodies on display for Facebook, the gram, and other social media platforms. As of now, because there is a legitimate investigation going on, he should stay suspended. If he is innocent, and was played, give him the second chance. Guilty…… then no more MLB.

Negotiated with him a monthly payment to be with her under age daughter. It's very unfortunate. Now, what many people don't know (or don't care to talk about) is that in Dominican Republic it is common to see a 19 - 21 years-old in a relationship with a 15 - 18 years-old. This is nothing shocking for us Dominicans. I don't condone it nor recommended it for so many reasons, but it happens very frequent and is almost part of the culture. The Dominican government finally, during the last decade, has been creating laws and has been addressing this issue but I believe it is due to political pressure. Now, let's put the blame where it belongs: parents. Mothers pimping out their daughters (to adults that just because they live in the U.S. or Europe are deemed good providers) is not uncommon either. Now, imagine a dude like Wander with all that loot and fame! Believe me, this mother was not the first or last one to throw their daughters at Wander. The only reasons Wander is in this situation is because he refused to pay up, give in to the family's demands and his net worth.

He certainly had that potential, even given playing in just parts of 3 seasons. I am weary however to put such labels on players at such an early age. He played the equivalent of just over 1.5 seasons. But was slightly better than Bo Bichette in 2023 based on OPS+. Would have been fun to compare these two over ten or more years. Unfortunately, another example of a sports figure royally messing up, I believe the fame and fortune get to some of these guys' heads.

If he’s proven guilty in a court of law no his contract will likely be forfeited due to contract legalities. But he’s made $5 million so far as a pro that’s not including endorsements. $5 million US dollars in DR is equivalent to nearly $300 million so he’s still set for life regardless.

Not defending him but I know a guy who got in trouble for this type of thing because the girl was 15 and lied and told the guy she was 18. Some girls look older then what they are and while it might be easy to prove age most people won’t ask someone they are dating to pull out their I.D. It could be possible Wander didn’t know her real age and if she looked 18 he probably didn’t think to verify it.

@@QRS4 The way I see it is a few things could of happened here. 1. The most popular: Wander Franco knowingly did what he did. If this is the case I hope he goes to jail for it. 2. Wander Franco was lied to about the girl’s age. Maybe he found later and they threatened to report him if he didn’t keep paying them what they wanted. 3. It’s possible that the other 2 people involved are lying in order to get something from all this or Wander could have gone out with them on separate occasions not knowing their true ages. He has probably dated many people considering he is a rich baseball player. There are a lot of sick people out there that commit crimes like Wander Franco is being accused of and they deserve to go to jail, but I also know that it is extremely common for teenagers to lie about their age. I remember girls and boys doing this in high school and a few even had fake I.D.s. So I just prefer to not judge until all the evidence comes out.

When you’re young or even older some girls lie about what age they may be. The key is to not mess with young ones under 25 or not be a horn dog and get to know them for a sec, it doesn’t take long to filter through the bs.
