Once a person is convicted of a crime that requires a custodial sentence in Hong Kong, he or she will be sent to one of the city’s 28 correctional facilities. Hong Kong prisons are divided into three security levels, but what is common among all of them is a strict set of rules and routines prisoners must follow during their time of incarceration. We talked to people who spent time inside Hong Kong’s prisons to get first-hand accounts of what life is like inside.

What's sad about Hong Kong is that these prison cells often larger and cleaner than the criminals' own living spaces. Literally an increase in quality of life by going to jail.

Number of prisoners in Hong Kong: around 8 thousand, incarceration rate is around 106 per 100 thousands population. Number of prisoners in USA: around around 2.1 million, incarceration rate is around 655 per 100 thousands population.
