Mt St. Helen's: I was living in Glendale California, when we got the air quality warning about ash. We left school early, and on my walk home it was like it was snowing ash. We stayed in our house and only went out if we needed something. It was unbelievable.

It was a lahar that caused New Zealand's greatest train disaster when the mud flow came down the river valley taking out the bridge across the river minutes before the Night Train carrying passengers was due to cross it the train ended up in the river and dozens of people lost their lives. New Zealand has a string of volcanoes and we have learned to live with them but never underestimate them our largest lake, Lake taupo was formed when the volcano exploded obliterating itself and dumping its remnants across the central part of the North Island forming what is now essentially a desert. All volcanoes are dangerous no matter what type they are they must be treated with respect and awe to do less is the court disaster and arrogance of the highest order, when you see Mother Nature let loose her Fury it puts us in our place and shows us how fragile we truly are in the face of our planets might

At 8:24 when Dr Hon (now the head of HVO) was talking, behind his right shoulder you can see a HUGE crack, like the lava delta was about to collapse. Sadly, people have died from this happening! What's weird is from Mt St Helens to the direct north (toward Seattle), we near Sea-Tac Airport didn't get a lick of ash. We did when MSH blew again that August, like the dirt left on your car after going down a dirt road.

I keep hearing about volcanic ash and the damage it does both immediately and long-term. Trouble is that I have a very hard time comprehending this kind of ash. From fireplaces and campfires I thought I understood what ash was; burnt wood. It's soft, usually white and can simply be blown away if it gets on something. Volcanic ash is burned up ROCK. The idea that rock can burn is weird enough, but that it can float around and kill by suffocation when the shards of silica that have cooled and are little scalpels cut your lungs to pieces. It can kill like this 1000's of miles away.

*"Lahar" is an Indonesian word since hundreds years ago which means material released by a volcano. Indonesia is the country with the most active volcanoes on planet Earth. There are two types of Lahars, Hot Lahar and Cold Lahar.* - HOT LAHAR (Lahar Panas) is very hot, every material released by volcanoes, including lava and pyroclastic flow. - COLD LAHAR (Lahar Dingin) is already cold, every material that has long been released by volcanoes in the form of dust, sand and volcanic rocks and others. If this Cold Lahar is carried away by the flow of water because it rains in mountainous areas it's called LAHAR or Cold Lahar also, and this is usually the more frightening because it can crash, damage and hoard whatever it goes through, without mercy.

Every time i watch this is hear a phrase that intrigues me, this time it was about Mt St Helen's and the lava dome, "geologists say it could erupt again, but it's not likely, but they are certain it will happen in the future" it just sounds funny that the volcano now is right in front of them and they say not likely but they are sure it will in the future, should it be the other way around? Don't go off in the comments, I just love paradoxical statements.
