To fully understand the link between gun culture and white supremacist political violence, it is critical not only to examine moments when violence erupts, but to consider how cultural norms create conditions for such violence.
A portion of this next panel will explain the political ideology at the heart of dominant gun culture and examine the cultural implications of laws that allow visibly armed people in public, particularly at political demonstrations.
Public health researchers will also discuss the spike in gun purchasing during the pandemic and explore its relation to elevated beliefs in Christian nationalism, support for Jan 6 insurrectionists, and racial resentment and prejudice among gun buyers during the pandemic as well as an alarming increase in individuals willingness to engage in political violence.
