"And then... stock footage!" Great review. Mantis was one of the first giant monster movies I ever saw... on TV, on a UHF channel (look it up). I've loved U.S. monster and Japanese kaiju movies ever since - no matter how cheesy.

When I was a kid, this movie was my favorite.it was a rare treat on our local channels during late night weekend monster movie time slots. It was boring for most of the movie as a kid but the monster parts were worth it. And I always have and still do love praying mantis’s

I grew up on a steady diet of giant monster flicks, but somehow I missed this one until I finally saw it in my 20's. You know a movie is bad when you can honestly state that The Giant Claw is a better film.

The radar system was probably set up to detect any planes carrying nukes into American airspace. It’s common knowledge that the fastest way to get somewhere is to take a shortcut over the Arctic, so any planes carrying nukes from the Soviet Union would have to go over the arctic in order to bomb the US. Radar stations in the North Pole became obsolete when the development of the ICBM rendered any sort of plane usage moot

To be fair, the Arctic (not Antarctic) early warning system thingy was a huge deal in the early Cold War because that's where Russian nuclear bombers would fly over to the USA and it would give everyone precious minutes to spend ducking and covering.

I haven't seen the MST3K version of this - I used to grow up watching all those horrible yet wonderful 50's B-movies as a kid and when catching up with MST3K, there were only a few which I saw MST3K do that I watched in their original versions. This was one of those that I actually did NOT see the MST3K version of, and I while I have far less appreciation of it now, I do remember fondly (and somewhat embarrassingly, I might add) how it was part of my viewing early childhood to early-teen experiences - all the clunky acting, goofy monsters, overuse of stock footage, silly use of science, dated sociopolitical background, bare-bones plotting and use of already-revealed mystery that didn't amount to jack shit, etc. Now, I'm beginning to wonder what my childhood self was thinking - at least I missed THE GIANT CLAW, that's the only thing I can say in favor of my childhood self. And yes, I have much reason to believe THAT is Kamacuras' dad! Ready for your review of SHIN GOJIRA! (Got to see it on a big screen here in Asheville and for once with original Japanese language in English subtitles.)
