TikTok acknowledges that it can be a dangerous place for children and seeks to scrub risky videos. Still, some get through and kids get hurt. In the case of the "blackout challenge," some have died. Now families are filing lawsuits against the company to try and answer the question: who is responsible for these deaths?
Warning: Some viewers may find the subject matter of this video disturbing.

As an 80s baby, I can say this "challenge" was one that was present in elementary schools growing up. Social media and AI algo's take things to a whole new level, regardless of the content. IMO, the users/community needs to take responsibility and everyone needs to be content moderators, not just the ones that get paid at these companies. We can't just expect others to fix problems for us and complain when they don't.

Why is a 9 year old on tiktok? Why do the parents allow their 9 year old child to use tiktok? Why are they not monitoring and limiting the content their children look at online? When do we stop blaming an app on a phone and start taking responsibility for poor parenting? Why do we blame social media companies for proving a service and not the content creators pushing this nonsense?
@thisismissem
@thisismissem Жыл бұрын
I'm not wanting to defend TikTok here, but their stated Minimum Age for use is 13 years old, as defined by the COPPA act which prevents companies from collecting data on children in theory. There is definitely some responsibility on the parents to ensure that the children aren't accessing content they shouldn't be seeing; though tiktok also definitely needs to take down harmful content. Children generally shouldn't be using social media without their parents' knowledge especially in such a prolific way
@duckyworthIV

Its part of the responsibility of the parents to monitor what they see on the internet. There's tools they can use that can accomplish this task. They need to learn how to manage their own home network. Parents cant be ignorant about this shit anymore. There's so much scarring shit a kid can have easy access to.

In my day we played Club penguin and Poptropica at the library home and school for X amount of time and that was it. Tiktok is not a controlled environment for children. It's basically a search engine. say no to tikthot.

TikTok should be held accountable but so should the parents themselves. Ignorance is no excuse, she was a very young child and had literally no need of a smartphone. Not educating yourself on the dangers of social media and therefore not monitoring your child is your fault too, but I think these parents will not admit to themselves they are responsible as well

This begs the question: Where are the parents? I get everyone’s busy with work, household chores, and other children, but why are you letting your child scroll through TikTok unsupervised? Any form of social media has its hazards, and KZbin Kids, TikTok, and TV shows are no substitute for parental supervision. My heart aches for parents and families that are affected, and I believe we need to help parents foster a stronger bond with their children. That way, they do feel comfortable watching TikTok in in the living room or at the dining table, where parents can keep track of what they’re doing.

At what point do parents look themselves in the mirror & accept responsibility for their children. So the answer to not parenting is to sue LEGO for making the pieces small enough that your child & a group of friends decided the best way to spend their time would be to try n swallow as many pieces as possible & see how many come out. (as an example) No corporation is perfect & none are looking for your own best interest BUT that's what parents are for. In my lifetime, parents went from monitoring how much TV children watched, because they wanted them to do homework, go outside etc.... TO.... giving them TV, phone, internet, full freedom to do n access w/e & then blame "the world" which was already shxt, that it corrupted their child.

The parents want to sue TikTok, but it seems to be an attempt to skirt responsibility as parents. The minimum a parent can do is to protect their own children, and even teach their children how to use social media to their advantage. We're not in a world of ostriches with their heads in the sand. We have to promote independence and critical thinking

100% Bytedance doesn't care if Western children or people suffer from using the app. 100% they would continue with this even if they were LOSING money. Any company wants lifelong customers. The fact that 5 year olds get tablets and phones now... any content directed to anyone under 18 which is free... is 100% designed to keep them captivated and loyal. If you are a parent, you 100% should not trust tech around your children. You need to carefully monitor and control its usage, just like you would with tools, weapons, fire. If you have already allowed your children basically unlimited or heavy access to tech... you better do a lot of research into what they are doing on that tech, the risks, and the trends.

When I was in high school, back in the early 70's, the black-out fad,(challenge) was definitely around. I believe it was more of a "hiper ventilation" thing to do after getting high. Thankfully there was no social media back then to glorify and popularize it. I don't know how such dangerous behavior can be condoned and even encouraged by social media platforms for the sake of likes and money, but it is and they don't care about any collateral damage that may occur related to their content.....Talk to your kids.
