In this video, I dry some oxalic acid dihydrate azeotropically with toluene in a Dean-Stark trap.

Imagine how Einstein felt when his calculations matched his test results perfectly when he measured the bending of light around the sun. Now that was true beauty.

Very nice explanation! I saw this as a student-assistant the other week and I hadn't worked with it before. I wish I'd seen this video before assisting the students. Thanks for the vid!

It is interesting that your quantitative weight of water looked like only about 5 mL in the trap - pretty heavy water, man! A very informative demonstration of the actual function of this interesting piece of glassware. I never actually understood how we rely upon the very odd situation where an azeotropic mixture can be immiscible at room temperature.

your a really good teacher dude. I thought I knew what the dean stark trap was for but the refluxing thing is really cool.. now only if I could find an easy source of toluene in Australia, and afford a dean stark trap haha

Good detail video on Dean Stark, do you think we should cover the trap with wool and aluminium foil for the more efficiency to trap vapours in stark apparatus?

I'm trying to think of an excuse to buy a Dean Stark Trap.. Idk why, just looks like a pretty cool piece of apparatus.

There are so many different styles of condensers available to use with something like the Dean-Stark trap. Why did you choose that type, other than you had it? Also, how long do you estimate the reflux ran? Always good content, thanks!

Being interested in essential oil extraction I have done a bit of research on steam distillation. They generally seem to run the steam out a tube to cool it down and collect it after. Since the essential oil is heavier than water would you be able to use this device to collect it? If so it would seem preferable since you could use a smaller amount of water.

I think so yes, although youd want to have a pretty decent distillation/reflux apparatus. I recently found an anti-splash adapter with steam outlet that has come into use pretty handy

So how would you separate the oxalic acid from the other stuff in bar keeper's friend?

Would it be possible to make anhydrous phosphoric acid using this method?
@mmmhorsesteaks8 жыл бұрын
I believe you would form pyrophosphates/polyphosphates mainly.

Only m-xylene forms azeotrope with water and the b.p. of the azeotrope is noticeably higher (92 °C) compared to toluene/water (84.1 °C) - this will lead to more melting and decomposition. Alternative solvents may be benzene (69.3 / 80.2 C), chloroform (56.1 / 61.2 C) and carbon tetrachloride (66.8 / 76.8). DCM could be an interesting alternative but the b.p. of azeotrope is very low and contains very little water so the drying would take ages.
