Mary Queen of Scots first husband, Francis Il, died on on the 5th December 1560 when he was 16 years old. One month shy of his 17th birthday. His body was taken and buried in the Basilica of Saint-Denis. The Basillica had been the burial place of the Kings of France since the 10th century.
Francis' heart was placed in bronze urn atop an intricately carved column at the Eglise des Celestins. During the French Revolution the Basilica was raided and the remains of many tombs were desecrated, bodies were removed and ettigies destroyed. Francis' body was never found after this point. The column which Francis' heart was on was saved by archeologist Alexandre Lenoir and placed in the museum of French monuments until it was moved to the Basilica of Saint-Denis in 1817. #history #maryqueenofscots

Sad and horrible end for poor Francis. Even after death he couldn't rest in peace. I can only imagine how heartbroken Mary was over his death. Thank you for the wonderful video.

So beautifully told but so sad. Seems blood letting was the “cure” for everything.

Wow such an interesting video. I love the story of Mary Queen of Scots but I usually think about this early period before she returns to Scotland as not important. Clearly it really changes the context of everything else that happens to her.

I have been fortunate to be in Paris many times so I made my way to this Cathedral! All what I could think about is how so many of the Kings and Queens were devoted Catholics ! The French Revolution did so much damage to so many Holy Places in France ! YOUR KZbinS ARE EXCELLENT ! Thank you so much for your hard work on these KZbins ! Blessings from Michigan USA

Saint-Denis is probably one of the most over-looked places in Paris .. probably due to it's location. It was a facinating place to tour and the crypt was amazing! It is well worth the time to visit this site!

Imagine being born with no choice who you would marry . You go to a foreign place where no one likes you as an outsider . You're just a child . Then the lies and everything about you and just because you married someone you are put to death for it ... What an awful thing

Mary Queen of Scots was embraced by the French Court actually. She was very well received. And she wasn’t executed for who she married. I think you might be thinking of someone else? 🤔
