if humanity REALLY strived to be like superman we'd have a much better world right now. the problem is humanity continues to see ethics and justice as unobtainable "utopian" goals rather than as tangible and realistic expectations. so they don't even try. its one thing to be inspired by a comic book to dream of a better world, its another to actually dedicate your life to achieving that world. and that's what i've done. decades ago i pledged my life to making a better world and, with few exceptions, i've honored that pledge. superman's ethics isn't something i aspire to, its something to which i've already devoted my everyday life. but, also like superman, i could certainly use a little help every now and then.

Superman is the First and the Best, Superman Inspires every one. Marvel and DC may be eternal rivals, at least in the minds of fans, but the leaders of both comic book movie studios banded together last night to celebrate filmmaker Richard Donner. In a presentation with Kevin Feige of Marvel Studios, and comic book writer-turned-producer Geoff Johns of DC, Feige said that Donner’s Superman: The Movie is “the archetype” and that Marvel watches the film before each one of the studio’s movies is made. On Wednesday night, on stage at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills, California, Feige and Johns joined together to celebrate Donner for his achievements which include the 1978 classic Superman starring Christopher Reeve. “Superman: The Movie is still to this day the archetype of the perfect superhero film origin story and we watch it before we make almost any one of our films, and that’s been the case for the past seventeen years since I left the fold to go work for Marvel,” said Feige. Feige went on to quote one of Donner’s favorite words: verisimilitude. “It basically means be truthful, honor the source material, believe in it, take it seriously,” he explained, “and that is what we strive to do.” Feige then went on to say that director Jon Favreau, while shooting the first Marvel Studios production Iron Man, “copied” Richard Donner and put the word on his doorway. Uplifting hope and optimism radiates like the yellow sun in Donner’s superhero classic, so it’s not surprising that Marvel sought to channel that energy into all of its films which are consistently bright and colorful even with dark stories. See Feige and Johns celebrate Richard Donner below.

WB execs need to watch this feature and apply these theories to the next Superman film. In the 90s, those grim and gritty heroes were indeed all the rage, and people were upset when Superman was killed off because he was an icon of everyone’s childhood now taken away (albeit temporarily), only appreciated once he was resurrected. We currently live in a very dark world, and we need Superman stories of hope more than ever. Marvel got it right in their cinematic portrayal of Captain America without having to sacrifice the core values of the character, I know WB can do the same if the right people create a worthy screenplay for the Man of Tomorrow. More than ever, Superman matters.

Years of the comics kept a large part of his mythos alive and in 1978 Christopher Reeve, by way of Richard Donner, made Superman afresh. I’m hoping the next big movie that is made about him just bypasses another too often told origin story and just gets right into a gripping, inspirational story. Now Video games, no new standalone movie, no new animated series to encourage younger audiences. There is no push in creative initiative, just constant poor lackluster portrayals made by people not putting an ounce of an effort to bring the best qualities of the character to light. Superman is no longer the superhero people were encouraged to look up and admire, a character that envoked respect or admiration. Now, thanks to warner bros he is as they once said "irrelevant" . One of the best Superman moments in all of the comics to me is The Man of Steel #3 by John Byrne where Superman is helping Batman take down a villain called Magpie and she says "Shoot him" but one of her minions does the smart thing by saying "He just punched through a brick wall and you want me to shoot him, no way I don't anything to do with him", that just struck me as funny and realistic (that is what you would do if somebody did that) because I never understood why villains and criminals shot at Superman when they know that bullets bounce off him and he could even if wouldn't punch them through a wall.
