If you had to choose between face pulls and lat pulldowns to build more muscle, which would you choose? In this video, I am going to compare the two and explain the application of each in order to build muscle. Now, you might think that you have the answer already, but pay attention to the end of this video to see if you were right or not.
When looking at the lat pulldown, especially done in the way that not only I show them, but the way that Sam Sulek shows it as well - do you notice anything different? Now compare it to the face pull. Is there any difference between the two? Well, if you keep up with the trends in KZbin fitness, you should be able to identify it pretty quickly.
What we are talking about right here is long length partials. Partial reps are nothing new, but they are currently in vogue with recent research highlighting the benefits of introducing them into your training. With a recent comment left by a viewer here on KZbin, the common sentiment might be that the lat pulldown is the superior exercise simply because it features these partial reps. If long length partial repetitions are the superior way to train and they do not lend themselves to use with the face pul, then obviously the face pull is the inferior exercise.
Wait a moment. That can’t be true, can it?
Well, it’s not really a fair comparison. Just because the exercise doesn’t apply long length partial reps, doesn’t mean that it is not an effective exercise. The commenter themself thinks that it’s time to move on from the face pull, but I can’t agree. There is an important reason to keep the face pull in your exercise arsenal.
The face pull offers itself as an incredible corrective exercise to reinforce strength and stability in the shoulder girdle and the muscles of the upper back, including the rear delts. Not only is it a great corrective, it still has the ability to build muscle as well. If you don’t believe me, just take a look at the development of Jesse’s upper back.
Now this underscores the point of the importance of corrective exercises, especially the face pull. Jesse was able to build himself up to a 560 lb deadlift over time, without injury. By attacking the muscles in the upper back and the rear delts, he was able to maintain greater strength and resiliency that allowed him to progressively overload with the deadlift to get to where he is today. If he had avoided the exercise altogether, it stands to question, would his upper back be strong enough to assist in pulling such heavy weights? Would he have stayed healthy enough and injury free in order to continue progressing? Would he have the same upper back development that he does now if he only did exercises with long length partials applied?
Partial reps, while not a new concept, have gotten a lot of attention in the fitness industry as of late with recent research showing that partial reps are able to provide 5-10% more muscle gain than if they are ignored. That sounds like a significant amount of muscle gain. However, if you dive deeper, you might find that that 5-10% is not as significant as you thought it was.
If a significant amount of muscle gain over the course of the year is 10 pounds, then what is a 5-10% increase? That would be 10.5-11 pounds total. Does 10 lbs vs 11 lbs seem like a major difference? I think you would be hard pressed to find that 5-10% increase to be noticeable in the mirror, especially if you have clothes on.
Does that mean you should just throw out partial reps completely? No, of course not. As with most things in fitness, they have their time and place, just like the face pull. It's important to know when to apply the exercise or the technique in order to build muscle. So no, I don't think that you should avoid an exercise because it doesn't lend itself to long length partials. I also don't think that long length partials should be avoided because when applied as an intensity technique, they can extend a set to and through failure.

I don't like crowded gyms. So, I use a resistance band combination of 40, 30, and 20 lbs, a large carabiner, and 3-feet of thick rope, take it to the local park and attach it to the pull-up bar, and do my face pull sets. The air conditioning is much better than at the gym, as an added benefit. Also, it's free.

I’ve been an avid follower of Athlean X for about a decade, and the information here and the many hundreds of videos I have watched in the past on this channel is the very reason why I continue to follow the training programs and be guided by excellent information. The training programs offered by Athlean X are not just about building lean muscle or strength, but like Jeff talked about in this video, it’s about having a well rounded approach to your health and fitness. I’ve seen too many guys be so overly fixated on a single pursuit of fitness and don’t give it consideration on how they should expand their horizons when it comes to this. It’s this message of having a well rounded approach to your fitness that has appealed to me the most from this channel and it’s what gives me so much gratitude and determination to continue the journey I am on. Jeff and Jesse, I appreciate you guys and thank you for continuing to inspire so many like myself, as I have by far the strongest purpose to my approach to health and fitness that I could ever have imagined! 💪🏼😉👍🏼

Jeff, I absolutely LOVE this video. It is evidence you are *NOT* "KZbin fitness", as you call it. You're a fitness expert who uses KZbin as a platform to share his expertise. *BIG* difference. Nobody is perfect and nobody gets it right 100% of the time. I have my M.S. in Gerokines; I've contributed to research and read more than I care to think about. I have almost a decade of experience in the fitness industry. There's still shit I get wrong. But I always am looking to the research to learn and tweak my method, of course always with a critical eye. And your emphasis on that is a breath of fresh air among a scary number of fitness influencers that just throw around terms and ideas with no real evidence-based backing. I paused as soon as I got to the point where you brought up the comment you go on to discuss. This was honestly the first I ever heard of the term "long-length partials" (you can probably guess I haven't watched too much "KZbin fitness" in a while; the research I tend to turn my attention to, of course, generally is focused on older people). My immediate reaction was to look at some research; I'm always wary of any claims that a new strength training technique is "much more effective" than previously accepted, evidence-based standards. I'll admit it was a fairly cursory look, I did a quick scan of a few individual RCTs and two systematic reviews that dealt with the effectiveness of "long-length partials". And while there is undoubtedly *SOME* evidence they can be an effective *ADDITION* to a well-rounded exercise program, there is no evidence to suggest you can build a program entirely on them. Furthermore, my mind went to "well, WHY is this technique effective?" and the obvious answer is as you say, increased volume of muscular tension, particularly after you reach failure. When I came back to the video, it was awesome to see you go through (basically) same exact process. And then you go even further and bring it back to "why the heck are we talking about replacing one exercise with another, anyway??" and re-highlight the importance of both the biggie muscle builder exercises as well as stabilizing exercises. Everybody is trying to get big on KZbin; Jeff's getting us strong. Keep up the great work, Jeff.

In most gyms I've been too, using two ropes to do Face Pulls effectively is a big no go. There are often not enough ropes and I don't think it's good etiquette to do so. I feel like a complete asshole using two, and resistance bands are often lacking as well. And this is why I don't do face pulls, while using one rope is not giving me the proper form either.

One thing you can do to feel better, is make the suggestion at the desk that due to the ropes popularity they might add one/a few extra for a better gym experience. Then at least you did what you could to minimize the hassle.

Those Sam Sulek pulls are not lengthened partials- they are only just mid range partials 😊 Face pulls have stopped all the discomfort from a torn rotator cuff a couple of years ago.. they will definitely be a mainstay in my workouts! Thanks for showing them to me 👍🏼

What a timely video. I've heard so much about LLP's that I felt I was missing out. I even did a few yesterday in the gym after my regular routine. I just watched this and decided not to convert my whole routine to LLP's, which I was seriously considering. I would never give up my facepulls, though. PS. There is no emoji for facepulls. We need that!

After seeing so many fitness videos and applying many methods in my trainings, i came to a point where i realised that the best approach is alternating the execution methods. So instead of just focusing on either the eccentric or the conventional, the most optimal is doing both and also mixing them up. That way you shock your muscles and you improve overall performance. Also incorporating corrective exercises fixed my muscle imbalances and improved my general athleticism and lifts. Fuck around and find out and please focus on the form and not weights. Great content once again Mr Jeff !

Jesse, I love that you have hung in there. The gains are impressive, the strength is unreal. Keep it up, I know this is foreshadowing, but someday Jeff is going to need a stand-in. You are the chosen one! Keep crushing it and bring back some of the old competitions (maybe)...
