My issue with SBMM is that I miss the feeling of getting closer to the skill ceiling. Yeah, I used to hop into a new game and get destroyed constantly. But as I learned the mechanics, found my playstyle and got my muscle memory down I would get better, and I would feel that improvement because I was still playing against a random sample of the player base. Basically as I improved at the game, I would do better in my matches. SBMM means I never feel that progression because the game is actively trying to decide when I perform well and when I perform poorly. If I put in time to get better I will just be put up against people who are at that level as well, so I never feel like I’m improving

This hit.... But I think the biggest issue here for me and a lot of people was something that was show in almost every clip. I don't really have friends anymore and the ones I do are so busy we can't really play like we used to. I still have my fun don't get me wrong but not having many people to play with has silted the fun a bit. On top of that IRL stuff makes it hard to truly invest myself I guess. I miss playing halo in a lan with my friends for like 9 hours on weekend without a care in the world and now that experience happens but it doesn't hit the same I'm thinking about bills, work, errands I have to run the next day, etc... I can't really lose myself anymore. Not even sure what I'm saying really it just all hits different I don't hate modern gaming or anything like that just feel different IDK but great video man keep it up

Thanks man, but yeah that's always a hard one when the friends you used to play with don't really play much anymore, or you don't have the time. My honest suggestion is try to find a discord community or if you play games that have LFG servers (looking for group) just pop in some LFGs or community matches and meet people through that outlet when you have the time. I know that's not the best option for everyone because some people don't like talking to a bunch of people in a new group but idk grab a drink try it out maybe you like it maybe you don't. But that's my suggestion create a group of people that are on when you can get on. Hope that helps a bit if you try it out but yeah there isn't really much to remedy people around you and ourselves having less time for these things sadly ( also hope that all made sense I was being super rambly I just woke up lol)

hot take to counter your hot take: not all evolution is good. this is probably obvious and was outside the scope of the video but it's still important: like how shit keeps evolving into crabs, almost every multiplayer shooter now is filling the same mold, with the same movement systems and mechanics, including ones that used to be more unique. it all starts to blend together into a bland indistinct mush. most painful example is how Halo used to have very little friction and disconnect between your movement and shooting. crouch jumping never locked out your ability to shoot. sliding, sprinting, mantling, etc however, adds friction and "end lag" where you can't fire your gun, even if they cut it down as much as possible in the case of sprinting. it still almost feels like a completely different IP now, despite course correcting the art direction.

Very well put together video! Had this one in the watch later list for a little too long and finally set aside time to watch it. I entirely abstain from games with predatory business practices, and that is unfortunately a large majority of games. It doesn't help that my tastes are niche and attention is fickle. I've had more success enjoying games by creating distance from them and only playing for short bursts, and trying to keep myself away from watching too much content on any games I'm currently interested in (which can be tough, information is half the battle after all). I just think it's a shame there's so few titles I can genuinely say I enjoy now, compared to when I'd go buy a game myself at the store and be excited to play it when I got back home. I still treasure every physical copy of every game I've owned because, it's like you said, the memories associated with the game are the value you get out of them.

What had always confused me is that SBMM doesn't seem to accomplish anything it's supposed to. It doesn't work to segregate the high-level players, so they could have a fair fight and don't unbalance every match. Instead it just guarantees there's one player on each team, slaughtering the normal people who have no chance of fighting back. They don't enjoy it because they see every game as either "carrying", or the reward for failure: a round of mowing down a team with no contest, just so their win/loss ratio will be forced back to 50-50. But I'm just opposed to matchmaking in general, it's the cause of endless problems. Give me a proper server browser, so I can join one where I have low ping and like the culture. Imagine if instead of an infinite parade of usernames you'll never see again, you got familiar with the regulars on that server. Those were the days. Matchmaking turns us from people into interchangeable bots, which happen to be run on grey matter instead of silicon. There's no need to treat these players as people, because the matchmaker will just spit out a different set next time.

i get what your saying but the casual player base like matchmade and i do (to an extend) but i def see what your saying. ive kinda just tried my best to create that in my discord server (maybe will open one day to host customs and servers to play with a dedicated community. but yeah i see where you are coming from and value those parts of custom browser games but its got to have that balance of accessibility and features so ill take both for now

To be honest I think the internet killed video games. Without the internet we couldn't download, update, patch. They had to produce a polished game. The internet killed all media. Look how the internet killed the music industry. You can't even buy a CD anymore. Look at movies. They want you to stream them all. In the 90s we used to go shopping for media on our days off. Go to the mall and get CDs, video games, and movies. Internet really sucks, I mean today everything is censored online. In the 90s we had the anarchy cookbook online free to download. Consoles also censor games. PC is the only platform with adult only games.

I'd be interested to try to find an understanding in this take. I definitely disagree most people would say halo 2- BO2 years were the best for gaming! Idk what kind of games you enjoy. We've definitely seen a decline in single player games too tho. So that might be because of the trend of pushing live service but that's a trend and it will fade. Executives pushing single player devs to make online sustainable live services is not easy and usually doesn't work. (Currently at work so might make a longer comment later lol)

Good analysis, I don’t really play too many online games but the conclusions seem appropriate for single player experience as well. Started gaming in my 20s and played mostly 360 games to whatever is on gamepass. Initially it was a fun experience playing so many different games but I feel like game mechanics are being utilized so often it’s hard to stand out. I started out as a dry sponge but eventually became over saturated with so many games played in 7 years.

I think the biggest issue is games with a live service model where the game is treated as a temporary product which won’t be available in the next decade or few years even or early access games where the first few months is treated as funding the rest of the game by new comers on epic games launcher than re releasing on steam to get positive reviews (not a bad idea). Another issue is that there isn’t as much variety on triple A games either back in the PS2 or 360 Era you had a lot of variety of games such as extreme sports, unpolished and usually awful licensed games (rare to see now), games which wanted to be gears of war or had general gritty and gross aesthetics. A lot of modern games are a lot more vibrant and adhd minded trying to keep people with low attention spans engaged with bright colours and flashy imagery. Like old COD tried to be real and had very serious tones of colour in the story and multiplayer but now everything is over stimulating because fortnite battle royal took over. Nintendo doesn’t explore with new IP’s or use ones they have abandoned for nearly 20 years which were great. Also hero shooters being the new craze too. It seems like a lot of companies are just trying to play it safe and indie developers or smaller studios are making the games people actually want. I think the worst thing is that you technically own nothing with digital games (physical media has its own problem especially optical media or some cartridges) my main issue with digital games is that these games will eventually get delisted or the servers to download them again will go offline and the product you owned is now longer available. I think it’s sad seeing so many online stores close too or online services it really is the dark ages and it feels like you are only meant to enjoy things when they are relevant now.

I mostly agree here, I think it's another reason I advocate for people moving to PC as it gives you at least more choice game preservation is a big thing now because of the way the industry is. @@LCVcultGaming even games that had p2p systems like GTAV on X360/PS3 but player stats were server side and the older CoD games too were unplayable for a few years due to a bug in the servers to help players connect to other users. But GTA IV had no server sided stuff as it was just a p2p mode with gamemodes and lobby rules and I think p2p and dedicated servers need to be a standard in games these days as even CSGO got pulled completely and disabled multiplayer features in the last build so you are limited to Replays/Demo viewing and took out the community server features. The original counter strike would outlive today’s counter strike which is completely ludicrous. Obviously PC gaming being the norm is a great thing as it is kinda more accessible than ever and there will always be community for even the most obscure things. But I think people buying into this crap/disaster is what is funding this destructive development.

I believe the major thing is money getting in the way of the fun, the necessity of having a game being money-maker (I’m not a native English speaker sorry) like we have seen with Rocket League (I’m also a pc player) corporates need the money of the videos games industry. And to talk a bit about the SBMM personally I played league of legend were I got stuck in the loop and that broke me from gaming. Or at least for ranked, I can’t go in ranked on other games without thinking of the nights I would spend having two wins and 5/6 loose. And it’s a bit sad to see gaming heading this way. We have seen Overwatch 2 cancelling it’s campaign to had it as event online, now a days it look like you either do a great written game with powerful story and characters but it’s not online. Red Dead Redemption 2 is the perfect exemple the solo is one of the greatest game given to see to myself but the online….. only turned to the money, imagine having a cowboy game without a horse…. The venue of Fortnite really launched our world and the industry in a way that broke the magic of gaming. But you still see some good games trying to come with good ideas ! I don’t loose hope that some sane games for the players are coming. We will see with GTA VI for a start and then hope for other titans of gaming to go a bit back on their decisions ( yes I also fear that GTA VI will be payed by monthly payment like Netflix but I don’t want to see my secret garden that is gaming becoming the industrial war it has become like the cinema industry)
@LCVcultGaming
@LCVcultGaming 6 ай бұрын
agree with everything here, GTA VI worries me because TakeTwo is greedy and they have since how much they can make off shark cards. Also the news just leaked about all the canceled GTA V DLC that was for the story mode. All of which was canceled for GTA Online support, or more cleanly put, more stuff for you to spend money on. But yeah RDR2 Online is an absolute shame, copied the start of GTA Online and had no support. My friend Schlurp It in this video plays RDR2 Online to this day and he is always pissed about how it could be good but it's not. I love that you called out cinema though because yeah, that industry (another that I'm highly invested in) is absolutely dead right now. I think what you don't wanted to happen with games has already been here though however I feel a shift happening soon. Maybe not a huge one but hopefully for the better. Thanks for watching though, and if you didn't relate as much with the "you're old" part of the video I'm actually glad for you. Maybe you just haven't had an issue being invested in what you enjoy, in this case games, and that's great.

Im studying CS and taking game dev courses. Quick dive into game theory: according to Bartle's gamer types there are socializers, achievers, explorers and killers. Socializers are the MMO RPG Players like WoW, achievers want to be the best and grind achievements, explorers care most about immersion and interesting game mechanics and killers are your teabagging FPS battle royale players. Every gamer is on a spectrum inbetween these types. Now what surprises me the most about all of the new games is that nearly all of them are hyperfocusing on the killers, even though they actually are like 5-10% of players. Most players when asked in a survey would prefer not to sweat their balls off after a long day at work. Personally Im an explorer and socializer, and I actually hate sweating in games, so playing remnant 1 and 2 with 2 of my friends was the most fun I had in quite some time. I dont get why so many games are so focused on 8h a day hyper sweats. I want to have fun, I already have a job.

agreed, and if that 10% stat is real it confuses me even more. Maybe the revenue shows them something else. Just sad we cant get variety. I like "sweating" every now and then but ill go play ranked for that. If i want to chill and play with friends dont make me sweat

I don't buy into the "you're just getting old" argument. All age has done is deter me from cookie cutter mechanics in specific genres (similar games from the same mold: military shooters, battle royales, MOBAs, sandbox, open world), but I still invest all my time and pledge full immersion into modern games like: - Voices of the Void (beta), - Pizza Tower, - Baldur's Gate 3, - World of Horror, - Pokémon Unbound. My highest time spent on one game during my childhood has to be Garry's Mod (780 hours), and my highest time spent on one game as an adult is Baldur's Gate 3 (302 hours). My gaming habits haven't changed since I was young, I love games, but large corps have heavily dropped in quality in the last half decade. You play one live-service game - you've played all of them. Hot Take: Call of Duty & Halo's multiplayer look the same. PS: Act Man's Genshin video broke my perception of his integrity. If he's willing to claim he's allowed to point out all the flaws and then end up strawmanning inside drama to obscure the game's real problems, I can't trust he didn't just suck up to his co-host so he could appeal to his young fanbase. Oh yeah, *Black Ops 3's zombies mode* and onwards SUCKED ASS! I get switching up the formula to retain the crowd, but putting power-ups behind paywalls & adding sweaty movement controls put me off. I ordered a realism Black Ops shooter and got Modern Warfare - gross. I'll stick with TF2.

@scrittle
@scrittle 4 күн бұрын
@@nonr.2347 As much as it follows the idea he presents, he can only speak for himself. Touching on a splintering idea doesn't encompass his whole personalised theory since unlike him I don't subscribe myself to decaying franchises and lament how much gaming is "dying". This is something I didn't consider in my comment: I am actually optimistic about video games. I must've been sleep deprived when I mentioned the degenerative state of gaming, when that only applies to AAA, and I don't play AAA. I picked out AAA discounts from bargain bins for my PS2 and 360 as a kid, and today I'm not particularly fond of AAA thanks to the diversity of Steam and their dark practices. My comment is framed in a retrospective light because I hadn't touched Black Ops and Halo in a long time. Why? Because it was affordable and offered something unique, today Black Ops is a bog-standard futuristic military shooter that increasingly takes cheques from the American government (the military pays subsidies) and Halo has forgotten what it is. As for TF2, most class shooters are intrinsic as heck, it's difficult moving on because you'll need to re-learn the game from the ground-up, which is time I could put into playing games in my backlog. This reply is super personalised, but so is this video. Unless a sociologist comes along and hatches a new theory on purchasing habits, I don't think this discussion can be concrete anywhere past anecdotes. You too have your own purchasing patterns and your justifications behind it that conflict with the video, but I'll leave this reply here, I've rambled enough.

Most of them suck, for they lost the essence of what made them great. Good stories and the world of possibilities. This is why Rockstar is doing so well, and why people still play Skyrim today. I often wonder why triple AAA devs think not hiring great writers was smart. Games with great stories create immersive fun, such as Baldur's Gate 3, Hogwarts Legacy, God of War, GTA series, Witcher 3, Elder Scrolls, Mass Effect 1-3, etc. Now most of the legendary ones are those with a world full of possibilities. Exploration that allows you to find even more stories. This is why Starfield failed, the main story was not great, and the exploration was too repetitive and boring. Ubisoft games have decent stories, but often it does not flow well. Their map tells you where everything is, but at least you can disable the hints for a more immersive experience. Still their cash shop has the cool looking items. Discovery is lost in many games, and finding a location is no longer as exciting as back in the old days. I love it when you open your map/minimap for the first few minutes and see utter darkness except where you are, and as you go out and explore the world opens up to you. Edit: I totally agree the love of MONEY has messed up gaming, removed the need for immersion. They spend more time on the cash shop than the features. The cash shop now has all the fun items they would have put in the world. This is why Elden Ring did so well, for you could find something cool around a random corner. Greed has killed gaming, and I am sure it's not me just getting old. For even my kids find the same games I love fun, and the rest simply SUCKS. Thanks for your video!

I agree with this on many fronts, I think I cover multiplayer with a lot more focus in this video though, so if you like to come back and watch it when it's premiering I'd like to see what you think about what I came up with. @@LCVcultGaming Yup, watched it, and Point 1 is accurate, the love of money has ruined gaming. Point 2 is part of it, but I notice my kids dislike the same games I do for the same reasons. Point 3 is really critical, and this is why I invest time in new mechanics of the games I love. I play Black Desert Online as my only MMO, and I have been to every part of the map, joined multiple raids, and just had a blast with my Guild and other friends.

@@tlove21 yeah def agree with everything you said here. one question by point 3 being critical, do you mean critical good or too much emphasis put on it. I'm assuming you agree based on your statement after. I didn't want it to seem to much like I'm saying become a sweaty player or something, but if you pick up a game with build crafting... learn the build crafting. (I'm getting Gherkin into Destiny rn and it's really fun seeing some one learn it in that game) but I'm glad most people aren't feeling the second part AS MUCH as the first part because MONEY IS DEFINITELY the MAIN issue with what state the games are in. However, I do know people who need to hear the "you're old" part as far as just finding your own fun or learning new things goes. It does make me happy that you don't struggle with it as much, I have been struggling with it in Single player games a bit sadly. Either way glad you enjoyed the video! Thanks for spending an hour of your time listening to my over edited shit post! hope to see you around!

Exactly! This is actually a well known fact in the gaming industry. according to Bartle's gamer types there are socializers (WoW, Minecraft) , explorers (Subnautica), achievers (achievement grinders) and killers(teabagging FPS players). Every player is on a spectrum inbetween these types. Most games today focus on the killers, even though they are like 5-10%. Exploring and socializing is almost nonexistent anymore. I guess you can hook players for longer in a game where you rarely win and your not done when youre through with the main quest.

I think the problem you described of people not feeling like playing in a private match counts as playing the game is because of global xp and progression systems. If you don’t get some kind of persistent reward from an activity it’s almost like you did something else. Can't play with friends when the opt-in requirement is a full priced game (~£60) per person because couch co-op is dead. I don't go out of my way to buy games from big companies anymore either because prices are now ridiculous (Black Ops 6 is near £100). Last game I bought from a larger company at full price was Baldur's Gate 3 (and it was well worth it). Baldur's Gate 4 is predicted to suck since the BG3 team won't be working on the sequel.

I hate SBMM because I dont feel like im getting better. The matches will always feel like sweat mode is on as they adjust the skill ceiling. This also adds to boredom since the only obvious form of progression is unlocks; but that means nothing in todays age of buy it or play enough to unlock it. And in Halo my friends hate playing with me because everyone I match up with are cracked, anything less than my skill level and I get 20+ kills. But perhaps the worst part is that your match is determined before it starts. No matter how hard I carry my friends in a match the other team will have two of me which guarantees our loss. And its not like a normal loss, its always an infuriating loss. BTW 10:55 was dirty!

But it’s telling that when a buddy and I play a new game, within 2 hours we’re play Halo MCC, and black ops zombies, or guitar hero. And when I play by myself, it’s Fable remaster and Mario 64/ sunshine. New games are not fun, you can feel the corporate executives grobby hands just on the main screen.

I think it’s how it’s always been just in different ways. There are still amazing games and plenty of shit games just how it was 20 years ago. Games that have recently came out for example that are near masterpieces are Elden ring, red dead 2, Baldurs Gate 3, resident evil 2 and 4 remake. Yes those have been over the last few years but they are still fairly new and plenty of people still haven’t played them. Then there are still a ton of good games. I think it’s just now basically the entire world can hop online and talk to each other and people tend to fix on the negatives so it seems like it’s worse then it used to be and honestly it’s not.

And second I do think online games have went to shit compared to before but for mainly 3 reasons. One is pay to win, then sbmm, and finally cheaters. From what I’ve noticed cheating seems to be the worse contributor, most people nowadays think they are hot shit and think they “deserve” to be better and when they realize they aren’t instead of quitting the game they just go drop 20 dollars for some hacks so they can finally feel the little bit of superiority they think they deserve. When it comes to online games I think the players themselves are the biggest reasons it’s shit now. There are SO MANY people that sre willing to use hacks or drop hundreds if not thousands of dollars in a pay to win game. People can call it cringe or whatever but there’s no honor or pride anymore and they will do anything to win a game even if it destroys the game in the long run.

I went to the Xbox 360 for MP like Halo 3, while on PS3 I went for more single-player experiences like InFamous (a superhero game I still recommend people play). The Wii was fantastic for rainy days when my autistic self also felt the need to move. PC is where I played all my Minecraft and TF2, because I was playing Minecraft in the developing stages before it came to Xbox 360... I still played the 360 version with my dad, tho.

We might be old but also games mostly suck these days. Gameplay sucks, stories suck, pay to win sucks and so on. Most games only concentrate on online play and massive menus that you have no clue how to navigate and so on. Very good example of a very good recent game is Elden Ring. It was fresh, interesting and making you want to figure things out, find new stuff and so on. And there is very few games that has good story and fun gameplay. Few games that was good in last few years regardless glitches and stuff. God of War ( easy,fun, good story ) Cyberpunk ( Easy,fun, good characters and good story ) Elden Ring ( Hard,fun, good story but only when you actually figure it out by playing it more than once). Innovation these days sucks, rest of the games all the same.

I totally understand but it's a bias take, I mean idk if you're just trolling, but was the 360 era not all about Xbox live. I know it was on the OG Xbox but it wasn't the same degree. Tbh I don't think a game not having a split screen option makes it a bad game. I'd love to see the option there for people who want it, but it doesn't make the gameplay bad. The micro transactions I totally agree with, I miss being able to unlock the stuff in game. But the rest of you're take seems biased. (Not that mine aren't) I could make the argument that DLC ruined games, because it led to unfinished releases, or maybe it was being able to patch and update the game, maybe that was the turning point. Like just because these things have been ways for them to get away with garbage behavior in the industry doesn't mean we didn't take away good from them.

i think this is a one sided take many of my friends do not play as much as me or play comp and still complain when they play by themselves. also SBMM makes it harder for players of all kinds to play together. my friend group is all over the skill curve, and it's hard to play together when after 3 games its sweat fest based on whoever has the highest bracket in SBMM. i truly believe the old SBMM of BO2 and Halo 3 works best for all groups and types of players. I've heard the "you just wanna shit on new players argument before thousands of time... tell me when newer players still complain about it being so sweaty... strict SBMM is stale and isn't good for anyone IMO. I would be welcome to an approach where someone doesn't use the "you just wanna stomp" point because at this point I feel like it's cope or people being mislead. Games should be fore everyone, and also be fun, strict sbmm takes that away from many players, and when the old way worked just fine for EVERYONE I don't see why we can't have it besides getting newer players a couple matches to buy a pass or bundle before the game gets stale for them too.

the problem is gaming is the same as the problem in our capitalistic hellscape of a society as a whole, private ownership of corporations. All of the major publishers are publicly traded and the stock market has millions of people obsessed with short term gains and operates on a lie, that infinite growth is possible forever. Companies don't care that their business models aren't sustainable, its just a never ending, desperate chase to make sure the graph goes up. It's not enough anymore to be profitable, you must be MORE profitable than last year, forever. Gaming is one of the less serious examples of this, but we are going to consumes ourselves to death.
