The Death of John Hammond - Michael Crichton's Jurassic Park

Although the film adaptation of the original Jurassic Park novel by Michael Crichton was basically the same overall story, albeit somewhat streamlined, some people
seem unaware of the differences between both properties. And specifically the different ways in which their characters are handled. Now that we are approaching the
fifth film in the movie franchise due out next year and have confirmation of Jurassic Park's creator's passing from the last film, I thought it would be important to
go over the demise of the eccentric billionaire, as first told in Cricton's book. The Death of John Hammond is a meaningful one, that takes place towards the very end
of the story and its events have actually been seen before in a past Jurassic film, with another character.
This is a video that hopefully won't get demonetized but here is the tags, John Hammond Death and John Hammond Dies are probably searched terms for this as well as Jurassic Park John Hammond and The Lost World John Hammond but I think most people type Jurassic Park Old Man and Jurassic Park Death Scene when looking for this stuff. Now Jurassic Park Kills and Jurassic Park Michael Crichton could also make sense but Jurassic Park Novel or Jurassic Park Book may be more intelligent. With The Lost World Jurassic Park Deleted Scenes and Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom Benjamin Lockwood also providing tags, I'll add Jurassic Park Compys or as some spell it Jurassic Park Compies along with Jurassic Park Compsognathus and Jurassic Park Procompsognathus as well. Richard Attenborough is beyond incredible and I loved his work in Jurassic Park 2 honestly. Okay lets hope I don't get attacked for titling this what it should be lolz

RIP Mr. Richard. As a young boy he lived thru the Blitz of England. So during the filming of JP in Hawaii the crew sheltered in a Hotel while a massive hurricane hit! Mr. Richard slept thru the whole storm! He told Steven Spielberg that after the Blitz, one hurricane was no big deal!

"Here comes all his little creations" That's ... a surprisingly real way someone like him would react to meeting a death this way. No one wants to die, but knowing that your creations are strong enough to fend without you and live on ... guess Hammond had some reassurance in that statement, don't you think?

I’ve recently read Michael Crichton’s original work and my goodness I was so surprised by the way Hammond acted in the novels. At least in the film and screenplay Hammond learned from his horrible mistakes and did the right thing and a lot of love to Richard Attenborough for his role in this film because he was partly the reason why I got interested in dinosaur’s and so John Hammonds dream was realised! He managed to bring smiles to all the children’s faces in the 90s and for years to come. We love you Richard rest in peace.

The use of the T-Rex roar truly gives me chills and makes my eyes water by just how scary that roar is. Think about it, say you're on Isla Nublar, walking down a path and you're near a structure, then out of nowhere you hear that T-Rex roar, I would fall right down to the ground and stay the fuck still and cry in fear.

Movie version of Hammond is far better than the book version. This is one change that improved the story, however I was glad when book version got what was coming to him.
@LeonGun8
@LeonGun8 5 жыл бұрын
That's subjective. Movie version was what the movie needed but the novel wanted to show the hubris of it's creator. Hammond,to the end, refused to believe he could have been at fault for the mess that happened. It's good to point out that in the novel the mess goes further than the hurricane and Nedry's backstabbing. Dinosaurs escaped the island before the events of the novel and the novel vividly describes the death of a child at the hand of unknown animals in Costa Rica. The very reason the Costa Rican ArmedForces fo to the island is precisely because the InGen and it's island had provided it no end of headaches.

“The dark side of Walt Disney.” I like that. I have a theory that the reason John Hammond was in such huge denial (refusing to believe his Park would fail even after people were dying) was because he had recently learned he was terminally ill, and if the Park didn’t open, he would have no legacy, nothing to make the world remember him after he was gone. In the book, he has a conversation with geneticist Dr. Henry Wu. When Wu asks him what his worst fear is regarding the Park, Hammond replies: “That I will never live to see all the children of the world that are made happy by it.” Or words to that effect.

I remember reading the novel for the first time and I was shocked how different Hammond was and was glad the movie version was not like that. I think there was a report years ago that Colin Trevorrow contacted Richard Attenborough about appearing in Jurassic World but sadly his health was starting to deteriorate around that time so John Hammond was killed off and the Misrani character was created. Not sure if that report was true or not but considering in the years since The Lost World came out Richard Attenborough talked about being in another Jurassic Park it's sad that the combination of development hell of the fourth movie and his aging prevented him from returning. Anyway good video as always.

Damn, the way you narrated Hammond's death was very chilling. When I read it myself I was so shocked and anxious to know what would happen when the compy's appeared that it kinda passed me a bit how creepy his death actually is. I just read it too quickly to really picture it in detail. The added music and sound effects was a nice touch, made it all the more tense when listening to it.

The Hammond in the novel was an evil, evil man, and he clearly made his own demons, somewhat literally. The movie version was a tragic figure, with a kind heart but a demented thought process. He loves and cares for his grandchildren and admits his faults and finds some redemption, while the novel version of Hammond does none of this. The two cannot be more different.

Yasmina said that she 'read it up' somewhere that the owner of Jurassic Park was killed by the Compsognathus pack in the 'cursed' old park before Darius corrected her. Also, SPOILER BELOW . . . . . . . Dr. Wu getting attacking by the E750/Scorpius rex and almost dying from it in one of his video logs that Brooklyn and Sammy found in his laptop could be a reference to Dr. Wu's actual death by Raptors in the novel as well. I really love how the series not only service fans of the movie series but also novel fans as well! :)

I'm in agreement with your thoughts on the film version of John Hammond and the original "JP" novel: I too love the book, but I definitely prefer the late Richard Attenborough's performance as the creator of Jurassic Park. Now personally, I look at Peter Ludlow from "The Lost World" as the novel version of Hammond, but 'in a different wrapper' so to speak. Ludlow definitely possesses some of the novel Hammond's characteristics. It'll be interesting to see if Benjamin Lockwood from "Fallen Kingdom" possesses even MORE characteristics from novel Hammond.

Attenborough's Hammond was probably one of the best characters. Caring more about the animals and the people rather than the outright profit margin. He was just an approachable guy who just wanted to give something amazing to people. Its a shame that the character wasn't around to witness the opening of Jurassic World. As for the man himself, I agree entirely that Attenborough was the single most best choice for the role and i cannot for the life of me imagine anyone else doing it. Rest in Peace good sir. Hammond was honestly one of the most surprising deaths in the book. They were all so close to being rescued and if he'd just stayed with the group he would have been fine.

It would have been interesting to see a darker Hammond in the film. Richard Attenborough could have probably pulled it off. Though he has that kind gentle grandpa look. Granted Attenborough pulled off that misguided but kind hearted old man persona perfectly. He feels a bit more three dimensional in the film. He has his problems but his heart in that the right place, and he grows as a character as people, specifically Ellie, make him realize he made a mistake, and now he needs to fix it.

Jeez man! You can make these videos dark with just the movie stills. Wanted to say that in the top 10 JP deaths, but figured now I'd say that. I read the book and while I love it as much as the movie I still perfer movie Hammond over book due to... well, his kind and positive personality while trying to embrace humanity with its past species. Book Hammond was just a man who wanted famed success while movie Hammond wanted to create a meaning, which he did with Malcom's words: life will find a way. Still good video dude. You rock on this stuff

The book does paint a very different picture of many of the characters, but Johns is probably the most jarring. That being said, I really enjoyed the book and see it as a "remix" of sorts, a "parrallel universe" if you will (Though technically the book came first of course!). Lets be honest, any JP fan would like as much original source material as possible, right? Also, it makes watching the later films fun when you spot the re-worked references. Wu in JW was a particular highlight for me as I really liked his character in the book and he barely had a scene in the original film. Great Channel Klayton! I never knew there were so many JP superfans out there and we now have a channel to totally geek out! lol :-)

Yeah, Hammond in the movie really moved me, he had a sort of gentle passion and amazing dream like desire. His personality was amazing too, a sort of innocence that belief that nothing was impossible, even if it got him a bad end. Movie Hammond was one of the better things in the original Jurassic Park cause this was his dream, it was *everything* to him, and in some parts we can see it. especially when that dang gentle Jurassic Park music starts playing, and you can feel it, feel *everything,* feel his *dream.*

There's a possibility that two other parks were getting started after the first book. In a conversation with Dr. Wu Hammond states that he "leased a large tract for the Azores" in order to start "Jurassic park Europe" and got an Island near Guam a long time ago and was going to use it for "Jurassic Park Japan". It would be interesting to learn more about what happened to those parks.

The thing I least enjoy about the second book of the series is the retcon of Malcolm's death. I do love the line "stories of my death have been greatly exaggerated" (or something like that) but Malcolm's death and story arc was perfect at the end of the first JP book.

When I learned about Richard Attenborough's passing, it was one of the saddest moments I had had in 2014 - it was a very bad year for me. What was even worse is, I'm almost certain that the very next day or so, was when I saw the Trailer for Jurassic World. Now I think something needs to be addressed. I knew that now Sir Richard was no longer with us, that there was no chance of him returning for even a cameo during Jurassic World or any other upcoming sequel. And that really disappointed me because; with this film, I really wondered how Hammond would respond to it. What disappointed me the most was to learn that, with the new canon established with Jurassic World, Hammond died in 1998, a year after the events of The Lost World. Something about that doesn't sit well with me... For the one thing, even though in the beginning of the movie, Hammond is in bad shape - "The Lawyers are finally killing me," - a deleted line of dialogue says - that is meant to represent his state at the beginning of the movie, now that Ludlow has taken control. It's metaphorically killing his uncle. But now that Ludlow has been killed instead and the company faces Chapter 11, John appears again at the end of the movie, seemingly revived; well dressed and puts on a rather eloquent interview. I felt like that was meant to be a metaphor for how the balance has once again shifted. That now that Ludlow's nefarious schemes have been thwarted, Hammond is restored. Hammond's entire goal throughout the Lost World was effectively for not just InGen but also Mankind to leave Isla Sorna and those animals alone; to give them their rightful chance to survive isolated from Mankind's interference. However, all of that comes into question when - according to Simon Masrani - Hammond's dying request was to Reopen Jurassic Park and fix the flaws of the past. I can't see Hammond actually making that request so long as the last action we see in his life is telling people to step aside and trust nature, instead of exploiting nature for a Theme Park Attraction. It either makes Hammond seem like a hypocrite... ...or it makes Simon a liar. (I wonder which the movies would go with. In fact; has there been an Novelization of Jurassic World yet?)

God. I was 12 years old when I first read the original JP novel. I was in complete shock when I got to this part. I was like "Hammond DIES?!" Of course I pretty much knew he had it coming in the book but having grown up with the films I still didn't expect it. I was HORRIFIED to hear that Malcolm died. It threw me off to since I still hadn't read TLW the novel. Man the memories. Those were my very first adult novels I ever read and loved every word of them.

I really love this ending, even if it made me feel a little fucked up thinking about it. The idea of Hammond dying at the hand of his own creation just makes sense. I also really enjoyed the idea of him sorta going out like a hero in the script the author had originally intended for the movie. With Hammond being ripped apart as We hear his voice over the introduction. ALSO apparently hammond is a racist
