Have you ever heard another concept album that wasn't rap? What about The Wall? You can't really argue this. Concept albums rarely have a clear path or seamlessly integrate the story into every song. They often blend together in other ways that the listener may not know. Slim Shadey is his addiction. He's trying to kill him but he will always be there. As a recovering addict I understand this on a deeper level that just what it sounds like to an observer. Getting a ride out of people is part of his addictive personality and he now fully realized this and has probably been holding this back for a some time.
@Mushroomz3 ай бұрын
@@dereksmyth8596 yea here’s an example: I think after hours by The Weeknd is a great example of a non-rap concept album where the concept is phenomenally executed while still having individually great tracks. Another more recent 1 I rly loved (while it is hiphop) was samurai by lupe fiasco. The concept for that record is crazy but lupe makes it work simply by being an incredible lyricist. It is possible to make a concept album where the concept is coherent across every track and IN MY PERSONAL OPINION Eminem’s record here just doesn’t do that very well for the reasons I mentioned in the video.

with all due respect man, i don't think you were fully grasping the reason for his lyrics or the concept of the album, try to actually figure out the album and give an honest review, now I'm not saying Eminem is perfect at all or trying to be his annoying fan, but this doesn't come across like u have generally listened and understood the album. For example, Eminem has said before that the Slim Shady persona doesn't work today but worked back then, giving us a reason for why its appropriate to kill off such a big alter ego. And Gen Z has continually tried to cancel him due to things has said in the past so has not fighting air for anyone saying that.

Like I said in the video my problem is not with the concept itself. I actually think the concept of Eminem killing off Slim Shady is a cool idea for an album. And I agree that its well warranted given the current social climate. But again, the problem is with the execution. The fact that Slim only gets killed two thirds of the way through the record means that the majority of this album is just Eminem rapping as Slim Shady, which as we established really doesn't work in 2024. I would've personally preferred if the record started with Slim already dead and the lyrical content of the album revolve around Em grappling with all the good and bad that came with portraying the character in his music the last two decades. And as for the Gen Z canceling Eminem thing, I promise you no Gen Z member over the age of like 15 is legitimately trying to cancel Em. As someone who's right in the middle of Gen Z age wise, we grew up listening to Em's music lmao. But even if I disagree with what you said, I appreciate that you were cordial with your response. That's all I really ask for when it comes to commenting 🙏

Sound review... but I liked the album because of how a beginner can read this album to have understanding of multi-syllabic rhyme schemes and other technical parts (which what one can expect from Eminem's writing, but this seems much better than MTBMB in rhyme scheme and wordplays).. also, it is an upgrade from MTBMB, we dont get silly songs like Those Kinda Nights... Temporary and Somebody saved me, I literally have no comments. Eminem is getting old and he is probably making music for his kids so that they can listen to it after he is gone.. Tobey, Bad Ones, Head Honcho and Houdini didnt feel like they fit in... Maybe I could be missing something 🤷♂️ Overall, I do think it delievers what it was supposedly to deliver, but creating a whole 19 songs album when it could have been done in 10 to 13 songs is what made people dislike the album to people I guess.. The Slim Shady part got extended too much... Now with that being said, I think TDOSS is significantly better than MTBMB, so I will probably rate it 6 out of 10 (this album is not better than or equivalent to MMLP2 which i feel like decent to strong 7/10).. Tran . . . Sition... Do you like this album? What would you rate the album? Drop your review in the reply below
@Mushroomz3 ай бұрын
Credit where credit is due since I didn't really mention it in the video, but Eminem's technical rapping ability is still strong as ever with the amount of multi-syllabic rhyme schemes and clever wordplay. I just personally don't find much appeal in that style of rap alone, especially if it's done without care for how the song actually sounds, which I feel like happens a lot on this album.

A sound review, I agree with a lot of it but I think I have very different opinions on the tracks. I had a very similar opinion on my first listen of the album, but the second listen really changed my perception of it. I think the lines added for shock value actually RUINED my first listening of the album. By the way I'm not sure why you took a tone that paints out a "gotcha" moment at 6:16 since Habits already confirms your statement. I don't agree with the "have your cake and eat it too" sentiment. Slim and Marshall's voices were used to strengthen the album's theme, right? Since Marshall is portrayed as the 'real' depiction of Eminem and Slim as his rebellious 'alter ego'. Marshall is Dr. Jekyll while Slim is Hyde. The idea is that Slim influenced Marshall to say all those outrageous things, bolstering the album's concept. I'm not claiming everything Slim said should be dissociated from Marshall; my claim is that Slim has polarised and overblown Marshall's thoughts and opinions in order to turn them into blatant rage-bait. I also think the allegory of 'black Mushroomz' is a distasteful oversimplification and a strawman fallacy. You're comparing doing something in a real-life setting to something illustrated in a creative work, the intent is completely different. Wouldn't you agree that the Mushroomz in the 'black Mushroomz' scenario is a bigot for his actions? Wouldn't Eminem be one by correlation as well? That's why you don't think Eminem is a bigot, because you KNOW there's a very important difference. I do like the video though, imma subscribe.
@Mushroomz3 ай бұрын
This is a good comment. I do still disagree with some of your takes but I can definitely see where ur coming from. I think it's just an agree to disagree situation. As for the 'black Mushroomz' allegory, after sitting on it I do think that it comes off as pretty distasteful. So I decided to cut that part out of the video, mea culpa. Here's what I'd rewrite the allegory as: "It’d be like if I invented an alter-ego on my KZbin channel whose whole shtick is they said offensive/bigoted stuff. But you can’t call me out for it because I didn’t say it, it was my alter-ego Dark Mushroomz!" While I'm not a bigot in this scenario, I am still worthy of the criticism of acting bigoted (which is why I wanted to clarify that I don't think Em is a bigot, but that he still deserves criticism for some of his bigoted rhetoric on albums of his) Thank you for the compliment towards the video though, and thanks for the sub! 👍

I think FAILED is a bit of a stretch, you said your issue with the album it's not the concept of self but the fact that the concept creates a portion of the album that is personally unlistenable to you, guilty conscience 2 is supposed to recontextualize the entire first half of the album and make you understand it in a different light, while simultaneously bait and switching conservatives in his fan base for the ultimate critique of both slim shady as a character and the people who asked for slim shady to come back (probably a high overlap to those who actually hold extreme views), the entire album takes place in a fictional dream world thats satirical and based on the exact exaggeration of cancel culture that you speak of, inside which slim shady is trying to take over his mind inside his dream throughout the entire album, which is why some parts have the AI effect and some parts don't, to show the fight in the struggle between the two characters. He then wakes up at the end of guilty conscience 2. You said he is addicted to slim shady but he literally admitted that on habits thats what the song is about. That's why the album constantly has references to the dream, "thought you were dreaming huh?", "how many times you try to kill me?" refrences how the album also loops back to the start where marshall spits on the grave that he is being lowered into at the end of somebody save me, in the beggining of the loop shady rises and the album is structured like a reoccurring dream that never ends which is a metaphor for addiction, in fact slim shady himself is an extended metaphor for addiction, "you fed me pills and a bottle of alcohol a day, got too strong for you and lost control of me", etc. there is many themes of this album that is very self-aware and I feel like em is not being given credit for it. How can Eminem critique slim shady in a compelling way without first giving him the spotlight?
@alanlacosse88503 ай бұрын
Right off rip this dude jokingly says "his quote on quote cancelable lyrics" then proceeds to get all up in arms over the lyrics about Christopher reeves and Caitlyn Jenner, using the r slur and the trans lyrics (so its looking like it achieved its intended purpose) BUT dude exposes himself right away on where he stands by giving Eminem a W for trashing Candace owens (someone who's conservative) and is upset that he didnt go more in depth on the kanye West situation (someone who's also conservative) Then he says that style of writing doesnt work anymore yet literally almost everybody is messing with this album. Like literally everybody. Even people on the budden podcast giving it props. People that have hated on em for years saying its a solid project but it "doesnt work these days" Then he says slim shady isnt a real person and that he's using it as a scapegoat to say these things. Like uh.....yeah. He literally f*cking says that in "guilty conscience 2". And on top of that, so what? You just said sarcastically "quote on quote cancelable lyrics" and now you're throwing a fit saying there's no excuse for him to him to be saying these things. Smells kinda cancely to me. Then this dude proceeds to give props to "guilty conscience 2" and says WHY COULDN'T WE GET THIS FOR THE WHOLE ALBUM....When its like ....that song only hits as hard as it does because its preceded by all the zany slim shady tracks first. If he started with that song or just did it the whole time, then the context wouldnt even make sense and it wouldnt be impactful. Then he goes on to talk about how Em's fall off was mostly due to him using choppy staccato flows and then proceeds to play a clip of one of the only times in this project eminem does the fast rap style His only valid criticism was that "somebody save me" was basically "arose" 2 which I can agree with that Overall i think its safe to say this dude should get better at reviewing music

You're right, none of this is real. But then why are you taking it so seriously? The whole premise of this album is Slim Shady trying to cancel Eminem because A - He thinks it's funny. And B - He thinks this world needs to be shaped back to how it was 20 years ago (Which I kinda agree with). In the end, Eminem ends up killing Slim Shady (Unless the reverse theory is true) and Em goes back to making music. Obviously no one is trying to cancel him, that's just part of the story, as is a lot of this album. Sure, there is a little controversy bait but in the end it's just a fictional story with good music. I think it's really messed up that people get offended for something that wasn't even targeted towards them. I'm an Eminem fan but not that big of one and I personally think this album is awesome.
