The revitalization of Eminem's "Shady Records" in 2010 marked a new era for the rapper. Coming off the back of personal struggles, including battles with addiction that once left him on the brink, Eminem sought to reconstruct not only his personal life but also his professional realm.
One of the early moves in this rebuilding process was reconnecting with Royce Da 5'9". Eminem and Royce, who had previously formed the group Bad Meets Evil, had had their differences in the past, but both artists were in a space where they were ready to move past old conflicts and work together again.
Eminem also turned his attention to Slaughterhouse, a supergroup comprised of Royce Da 5'9", Joe Budden, Joell Ortiz, and Crooked I. Signing Slaughterhouse was a significant move, as it brought together four talented lyricists under the Shady Records banner.
However, Joe Budden, one of the group's members, would later become a contentious figure in relation to Eminem. While Slaughterhouse received acclaim for their lyricism and the intensity they brought to tracks, the group faced numerous challenges. Their album under Shady Records, "Welcome to: Our House," received mixed reviews, and there was an increasing sense that the artists were struggling to maintain their original identities under the commercial pressures of the label.
Joe Budden, in particular, didn't shy away from voicing his frustrations. Known for his outspoken nature and later his career as a media personality and podcast host, Budden often commented on the inner workings of the music industry, and sometimes his critiques included Eminem and Shady Records.
This, my friends, is the story of the only rapper that Eminem REGRETTED signing.

The issue with most of the artists Em signs is they arent MAKING the mainstream shit that will do Eminem numbers, OR they are too widely sifferent from Em himself, his fans want HIM not 10 other dudes half as good in their mind, Em needs to sign someone similar enough to himself rather than sign dudes that are what EM wants to listen to, Ems preferences in music IS NOT a mainstream preference so when HE beleives in a group or artist they tend to have to switch up and piss of their main base and never gain more fans because they changed up AND arent mainstream capable.

Em wasnt at all to blame, he went hands on with one album, hands off with the other, did everything he thought was necessary to make them successful. Meanwhile they all fell out and used social media to drag eachother and pass the blame, basically asking their fans to pick sides rather than continue to support them as a group. Slaughterhouse have more clips arguing online than they do songs at this point.

I think the simplest way to pick apart complex situations like this always seems to be looking at peoples track records of working with others. Look at Eminem: Signed to Dre, decades later him and Dre are still on good terms. Signed 50, decades later, still on good terms. Even though D12 broke up, all still on good terms. Even after beef with Royce, on good terms. Now look at Joe Budden: signed to Shady, left on bad terms. Slaughterhouse broke up, bad terms. Relationship with Em, ended on bad terms. Joe Budden podcast co-hosts part ways, bad terms. If you're looking at two people and one has a long track record of good working relationships and the other one manages to eventually sour every working relationship ever, it's not rocket science to figure out who the asshole is. Same thing looking at The Game. The Game manages to always have issues with every single person he ever works with and just can't ever seem to realize that maybe he's the problem. The fact that Joe Budden can't look in the mirror at this point and say "maybe I'm the problem" shows a total lack of self awareness.

Eminem and his team are the type to not just hand it to you. If you dont put in that work, you won't go far. He will give you the resources and opportunities, but it's all about what you do with it. I think most of his artists needed to be micro managered to be successful, and thats why they ended up not blowing up. Prople dont realize how much is actually already set up for artists to make them famous.

Joe's track record of breaking something that doesn't need to be fixed or fine tuned is in a lot of things. He did say on his podcast that he felt like they were just doing some nonsense rather than doing what they should be doing: rapping on grimey beats and not pandering to the masses. They deserved praise for being the 4 best emcees to grace a microphone as a collective. But, Em, from what Joe said, seemed like he treated them like a passion project. They started losing money for their momentum when Kendrick comes in the picture. They started doing these side things like...making ice cream at a Detroit ice cream store? Doing Chitlin Circus shows? Joe looked at it like, "Why are we not where we're supposed to be?" He left. Made a good Podcast...destroyed said Podcast and got some new people to be on it...and ended up destroying Slaughterhouse for the second time after Joel and Crook made an album pretty much confirming that the group was over. Royce is waiting on Joe to pick up the mic again...his podcast is his voice now. Joel and Crook will probably never speak to Joe again, only through Royce, due to how Joe disrespected them. Joe is a narcissistic self destructive weirdo and I don't think he has people around him to hold him accountable.

The funny thing about signing Slaughterhouse is that when Em signed them, they were featured on XXL along with Yelawolf. In that article, Em joked that Joe Budden was going to cause his problems. And he sure enough did. Slaughterhouse’s mistake was trying to go commercial when they were a crew of lyrical MCs. Their best material was the lyrical songs not the cheesy commercial tracks they did with Shady.

@@eliasl872 You can earn a living and do alright without going commercial. Most rappers don’t reach the heights of the artists you just named. What’s more feasible is carving out your own fanbase, touring, festivals. That’s what Slaughterhouse should’ve done and that’s what Joe wanted to do 🤷🏽‍♂️Royce did the best out of everyone in the crew and it just so happens that he’s the one closest to Eminem.

The problem is that there are not many people who like underground Hiphop nor appreciate lyrical rappers and it is hard for artists who are signed in Shady Records do not make radio friendly songs. The only one who did was 50 Cent.

Yelawolf was really popping too in 2015 and had even gold album but he basically destroyed his career after that. Seriously thought that he would be may more succesful than he ended up being because his music really resonated with people from countryside and “white trash”. And he made some really good radio/bar songs.

Joe Budden said he was mad that Em wasn't all that hands-on with Slaughterhouse. Em didn't work with them as much as Joe expected. But the thing is, Em signs veteran MCs with the expectation that they're competent in the studio. Em expects them to make hit records on their own, without him having to hold their hand throughout the whole damn process. Otherwise, why tf would Em sign nothing but rappers who have already established a fan base, have music industry experience, already sold lots of records on their own, etc.?
@sebastiancamacho55
@sebastiancamacho55 9 ай бұрын
Thank you!!! The other thing about Em's way of handling them was that he did NOT want to change the chemistry they had or anything about them. He just wanted to give them the resources they needed to be successful. He wanted them to be them they way they are and let them shine. If they needed him to be more hands on then why not say something ¿ Royce is his closest friend out of all of them if they felt they wanted or needed some assistance they could have said something to Royce and Em, would habe been there for them. You can't blame someone who wants to help you with the hardest part, which is the financial aspect. Then, not say anything about anything else and then later behave as if you didn't get the attention you wanted from them. If you don't communicate what you need, how is he supposed to help¿ But you are willing to self-destruct destroy everything. Then, stand on your grave yard and act as if you are the victim

I don’t know WHY people would be surprised or disappointed that they didn’t make it big. Peak deep lyricism [with complex rhyme schemes] never works in the mainstream as the main grab. The masses don’t want to think, especially when they gather to have a good time. They want to be able to be completely mindless and vibe with the rhythm and emotional tone. To sing it as an anthem to whatever they’re feeling, and be able to recite it wasted. If 8/10 people can’t immediately and intimately relate to it, it’s not for the masses. When you have a following of 500 Million people who have purchased your music. You can do some crazy over the top deep stuff because they draw is already there. Hit records usually have a couple niche, non commercial, B-side tracks. Where you can demonstrate your true talent and preferences. But you can’t BUILD a huge following, or rapid momentum, off of music that requires heavy thought by people who aren’t bought-in or invested. In essence: the music needs to be able to go in one ear and out the other yet leave a worm in peoples’ ears. Where they recall and repeat it. Effortless accessibility and connection.

Thats why i was not a fan of the "Our House" album... was not what made them slaughterhouse. It was corny pop songs, party songs and trying tobe radio friendly with basic rhymes and less Joe. Joe alwyas argued we need more depth and internal songs or life. The other 3 knew that wont sell and not what the Labels wanted.

I used to love Joe when his first album and a lot of his mixtape stuff came out around the time. He has a ego problem and feels like being all aggressive, loud, and argumentative makes his opinions fact. 1:30 he signed friends and people he came up with first. Wasn't worried about making them big, just showing them the business so they can make their own way. Yelawolf has a core fan base like that jellyroll guy so thats another horrible example. Every person who doesnt get their rap off spotify or the radio knows gunn,conway, and benny are legit. So saying they don't live up to the hype is absurd. Not every person wants to be 50 cent. And in todays musical climate the level of success or hype you're saying these artists aren't living up to is reserved for pop artists or someone like drake. What is you're artist example of someone who lives up to the hype?

If we are really honest, Eminem was never meant to be a record label owner. Even if 50 Cent signed with Nas, he would have still blown. 50 Cents work ethic and talent for how to work with beats made him stand out. To summarise my point, Eminem signed a full furnished artist. Eminem can't manage an artist without song structure. Look at Obie. If your record label owner is an artist and he is still releasing music, can you ever blow like that? Slaughterhouse and everyone on shady meant to fail because their boss was not an obsessed perfectionist, and he would never sit and tell them how to structure things. He was too busy with his own music, he couldn't give attention. That's my take.
