Every physical media champion should invest in a server host like Plex or Jellyfin, an optical drive for ripping their physical media, and in lots of data storage. Become your own streaming service. Become your friends and family streaming service. And keep the physical media as backups.
@GhettoFabulousLorch
@GhettoFabulousLorch 4 ай бұрын
@Peppersquads I'll start by asking what you know already and what you already have: 1. Do you know how to rip optical media? 2. If so, do you have the means to do so now? 3. Do you have a lot of data storage? 4. Do you know about Direct Attached Storage or Network Attached Storage devices? 5. Do you know how to look up your computer's IP address? 6. Have you checked out Plex, Jellyfin, Kodi, or Emby? Each of these can be looked up right here on KZbin, and I can look up videos for each of you request it. Once you take the plunge you will get the best of both worlds. It's been worth it for me and mine.

@Peppersquads I’m in exactly the same boat, except I’m a baby collector with only around 170 discs that I’d care to rip. I do have a NAS with tons of storage, a Blu-ray drive (that may or may not work), and a couple of Macs, so I’m over halfway there already heh… except… I can barely figure that NAS out… I really just need a buddy to take interest in my plight, come over, and get me set up… too bad I have no such buddy. I do have the NAS working, and talking to my Mac, but I know so little about it. Scared to use it too much when I don’t have back up… that’s what they don’t tell you. You basically need a whole second NAS to be a backup otherwise you’re not secure. So much money, so little use I’m getting out of it. Got it for filmmaking, but perhaps it could be for Plex too?? No matter how much I read or watch videos, there’s always some little thing I can’t find an answer to. Bleh, maybe I’ll try again to tackle this stuff. Way out of my depth. The network part is my downfall. I can’t really visualize a network, so it’s hard to set it up or understand what it’s good for. The temptation of Plex is great though, heh. Although, that said, I don’t know if I want to go back to last streaming… I just set up a shelf, and I kinda like going into the other room and looking at the Blu-rays. Suppose I can have both. Sorry if you read this whole thing, and thank you

I'm also an "old school" person. I never went to streaming. I still buy DVDs, Blu-rays and even VHS tapes. At the recycling center close to me, sometimes there are VHS tapes and DVDs for free. Flea markets are also good places to find movies, and of course movie stores. When I see VHS tapes, I'll get a warm feeling. Maybe I'm just getting old (46 in November) :D Like you said that they'll remove and censor movies. I have around 700 DVDs and Blu-rays, and around 300 VHS tapes (originals). I don't even know how many of those have been censored or removed on streaming services. Also a great thing is, that you can get those movies signed by actors and etc. if you'll get to meet them. You got a new subscriber. Have a great summer. Greetings from Finland.

I think the future will be a mix of options. Physical will grow again but will exist alongside streaming. I'd say the majority have no real awareness of the quality differences in media and often have very average equipment to play content. Physical is heading towards being the premium quality, large niche for the fans, connoisseurs and collectors. The masses have always seen media as disposable.

Compare that to 2006 when the format was brand new, and we’re doing OK. I do spend a lot sometimes though. About 28+ for the new Flight of the Navigator release. Definitely more for a couple others. 40+ for Little Witch Academia short film combo. Bit of a splurge.

. . The psychological effect of doing a slow release pattern as you've described, develops a desire for the product in the consumer. The methods they're using in selling the physical media today, as you pointed out is them shooting themselves in the foot while limiting the accessibility to said physical media. A brain dead, corporate ideology like a commune, it will fall apart. Thank you for presenting these issues, they need to be heard. . 👊😎

Here at this house, there is always in between DVDs standard Blu-ray’s and 4K Blu-ray, even laser discs that is owned by me, everything that I have as a favorite/love to watch, I do own a physical, copy, Seinfeld, diehard, a couple versions of the Terminator movies, so so forth, even have some HD DVDs that I have never repeat purchased on Blu-ray, if I have it on HD DVD I most likely will wait for the 4K/2 arrive. One more thing I have noticed about certain movies released in 4K, Sometimes they do have a lower sub standard DTS 5.one track, and I have noticed that sometimes my laser discs five point one track will sound better sometimes it’s good to own two different copies on two different formats for review purposes to see if the studio that mastered it has taken a step forward or step back in video or audio quality, unfortunately, you’ll find that most of them tempest step back in audio quality for some odd reason.

Maybe. Alternative is many may go back to the way things where over 50 years ago. Learning how to actually repair what you own. Meaning people learning how to solder, lubricate rails and gear and generally replace/repair any part of their own electronics. As opposed to modern day where the answer 9 times out of 10 is "With how much I have to charge you for parts and labor you may as well buy a new one".

@@memnarch129 i agree. I play guitar and casually work on broken amplifiers if it is nothing major. Old amps, tube and solid state, had fairly easy components to solder and replace. New stuff ( last 15 years) not so much. Consumer grade electronics are designed to fail and are born into the dumpster. Printed circuitboards are very difficult to work on. Point to point wiring is better but nearly non existent on everyday household “brains” that control our devices.

Currently we are in a fight with AI vs Traditional Art. I see a massive resurgence in traditional art making one of the biggest comebacks in history. If I draw something with pen on paper, that's literally the only copy in existence. Sure, you can copy it, but no coppier is good enough to capture the "soul" of the original. Only artists will understand the meaning behind what I just said. It's also real. AI art is just a bunch of ones and zeros that can be replicated millions of times and it will all look and feel the same. Same with physical media. I am so happy I still have my DVD,'s and Blu-rays. My absolute favorite comfort show is How I Met Your Mother. It's so satisfying to pop in my DVD and watch it as many times as I want to, and I also nwver have to buy or rent it again. A smart person would open another Blockbuster again

100% agree! Besides making films, I also paint..I mostly do pop art where I use original old magazines and newspapers and make a collage of them on a canvas and then doing the paintings on top of that and I don't like the idea of using copied magazine & newspaper pages for the background, much less someone using it as an AI sample 🤢🤮... you're right, there is no soul there....I think that is why people are rediscovering Vinyl- because it has more soul....and I think more will rediscover physical media for movies because of the higher quality, extra features (value added), and the personal experience you can have with them! Funny you mention a Blockbuster...my stretch business goal with my channels and as I consider making at least 1 more movie, is to open a small 2 screen theater where we show films from the early 79s, 80s, 90s etc and do cosplay nights etc and have a video rental "bar" out front that serves nostalgia food and drinks and actually rents movies! Maybe carry 5,000 titles or so!!!

all streaming sucks ass. When you pause on hulu they pop up crap in the frame and darken the outside edges so you can't even look for details, you can't grab a clip of the screen, you can't bump frames forward. You get none of that, but if you download a rip/own the physical copy, you can do ALL of that. Worse, particularly hulu, they censor episodes of fan favorite shows, censored episodes in community, in south park, in Sunny in Philadelphia. It's pathetic, and it makes more sense to download a full rip of those shows than it does to pay money for these places to play 1984. People associated w these censored shows should understand, THEY ARE ALREADY NOT BEING PAID APPROPRIATELY-THEY ARE NOT GETTING PLAYS THEY DESERVE. The streaming platforms they are on push their customers towards piracy.

I wish I could be as optimistic. My fear is that these days, for most people, it's convenience uber alles. Hell, people are watching films on their damn phones, where the screen is tiny and the sound quality barely exists. And as long as these people are putting convenience before anything else, the streamers will win. Sure, the streamers are all increasing their rates through the roof (and then add more money for less ads!), but people are actually paying them. I can't believe it either. And don't get me started on the incoming trend of vehicle options on a subscription. People will buy those cars after they get used to the idea. I mean dude, I really hope you're right, but these days I'm having very little faith in the fortitude of the average consumer. They will cave in every time to get the latest hot new thing.

its like these streaming services have forgotten their "identity" and what made people even start using them in the first place, and I REFUSE to believe that Netflix says they are not able to make enough money to operate with out raising prices, specially now that they don't offer DVD's anymore, like they started just by mailing people physical DVD's, I would imagine that would be a lot more expensive than streaming ( in fairness I really don't know what I am talking about when it comes to computers, this is just my thoughts I could be completely wrong )
@AVAPopCulture
@AVAPopCulture 4 ай бұрын
They certainly forgot who they are...and I know firsthand from negotiating licensing my films (we never agreed on a deal with Netflix) that they do not pay that much to license films....they also used to be big in the independent film world when they were begging for content and now they act too good for it which is odd because now indie filmmakers can actually afford to use the same high quality equipment that studios use...if they are losing money as they claim, then they should all be fired LOL...if you have are bringing in a Billion+ dollars a month and losing money, you shouldnt be allowed to run a business! 🤣
@michaelgrimes381
@michaelgrimes381 4 ай бұрын
its not that they cant make enough to operate without raising costs, just that they have to pay more now for thier "original content" to be made plus the liscensing fees went up on getting older content from the IP holders, and they want to keep the same amount of profit. lets just say as an example if thier costs were $25 + they wanted to make $25 in profit they needed to pull in $50 before, now thier costs have gone from $25 to $75 and they still want that $25 in profit so they raise everything to get $100 coming in to keep paying thier costs and keep the same profit margin. they could take far less profit if they chose to, but what company is gonna do that?🤣. also, while it is cheaper for them to stream stuff than to rent out dvds, they still have to pay a suprisingly high amount to maintain thier servers to hold all of thier content on to stream from.

I know we can technically still buy vhs second hand but new movies with Blu-ray quality obviously aren’t made on dvd/vhs anymore so I don’t want to keep having to rebuy a movie every few years when they update the quality, that’s kind of similar to renting if you see what I mean? I do collect vinyl but that’s because of the cover art and that lovely crackle like you said. Tech is always moving on so I don’t wanna have to keep buying the same movies over and over. this is one I can speak to experience from! My lower budget indie films were killed when the final Movie rental stores closed and then when Redbox declined in popularity due to more and more streaming services...Family Video rental chain (which we didnt even have here in Georgia) was a guaranteed buy of between 4000 and 8000 titles on dvd for their stores...Redbox was on average a guaranteed of 40,000 physical units...so if you made a movie for $250k and you sold those 2, you were already in profit...meanwhile Streaming on average, for indie movies, paid maybe $2-10k to license the movie for several years! So it paid almost nothing! Now imagine a 25mil Hollywood "low budget" film...without those physical outlets, and physical sales, they lose so much revenue it is mind-blowing to me that they are staying committed to this 2 week release at theater, straight to VOD, and limited physical model....they are literally killing themselves rather than admit the old method was better!

Even though I’ve seen the Abyss multiple times on TV (classIc I think cable) I bought the 4K and wow it’s like watching as a whole new experience. I’ve bought hundreds of bd in the last year to own better than streaming quality. Newest release I’m looking forward to is Twister. I have the classic DVD which at the time was excellent but the 4k remaster with immersive audio wIll hopefully blow anything from the past away figuratively and literally. I think that cable tv is dying but I don't think that streaming is dying. I think that streaming is evolving. I used to have hundreds of books, CDs and Blu-Rays/DVDs. In recent years I got rid of the bulk of my physical media in favor of streaming. I live in a small studio apartment and did not have the room for my former collection. I am glad and relieved.

I hear you...space is a factor...but when these major streaming companies are having to combine, raise prices, add commercials, and eliminate content because they cant afford to pay the rights, Id say they are doing everything they can to keep from shutting down...the word is that this new merger with Netflix, Peacock, and AppleTV will be available ONLY if you have Comcast/Xfinity cable...if that happens, it would literally force people to have Xfinity to get those streaming services...I hate that you had to get rid of your physical media...if streaming dies or takes away your favorites, you wont be able to see them and that SUCKS! It is as if you heard what was being said but failed to take it in. If you are happy with works being deleted and altered then carry on streaming. Go to watch a classic film and you will find scenes missing and words altered. You stream to save space. Guess what here is an idea a 5TB 3x5" portable hard drive is cheap and can hold thousands of shows and movies. Hook it up your computer, load up a media server and enjoy all your music and shows anywhere you want. Rip your music and films, scan your books and keep them forever. No wonder the corps do what they do. Sheep will allow and gladly pay for it.

Been collecting physical media in some form for almost 30 years. Collected Blu-rays since 2008 and 4Ks since 2016. I love collecting and wouldn't have it any other way. I don't subscribe to any cable or streaming services at all, hell, I don't even watch broadcast tv any more, I have dozens of TV shows on blu-ray and of course, can always 'sail the high seas' to check out new cable shows n what not, also a good way of 'Try before You Buy'. There are many people who love consuming movies and TV shows but completely uninterested in collecting, so streaming or subscription viewing I think will always be around in some form or another - it's just so convenient, far more so than having to drive down to the video store as we used to in days gone by. The only down side to being a physical media collector is of course storage space, which will always be a problem. But I really enjoy seeing things on the shelf - adds another layer of tangibility to owing them lock, stock and barrel, as it were...

You're not wrong. Something has to change in the entertainment industry or they will tank the business. You can't spend $200 million on a movie and pull it from the theaters in a couple weeks and put it up on streaming for "free." People are skipping theaters and costing the studios millions of dollars. And they've mostly eliminated physical media as a viable, profitable model because no one is going to buy a $25 Blu-ray of something they can watch on a streaming service they are already subscribed to. I think we'll see a shift in the next few years or the business will tank.

Most DVDs seem to be fine. I've got titles from the late 90s that still work perfectly fine. However Warner Bros. titles pressed from 2006-2009 have been failing in large quantities. This has been attributed to faulty manufacturing at a Pennsylvania facility so it doesn't matter if you keep care of them or not. Check these titles I had a lot that no longer play. They won't even start up and many that do will freeze up at some point. But outside of this problem I do believe that DVDs and BDs will last forever if you take care of them.

What I did was buy my wife the Disney classics on Blu-ray. I have thus far bought her fifteen discs in the past few weeks and she's happy. Basically, I can buy the discs for less than a one year Disney+ subscription. And not just that, I have over 200 movies on Laser and CED disc. Last thing, I have been buying vinyl records again. I like that analogy, too. I do use streaming services but I have them tailored how I want, the premium ad-free versions. They want you to pay less and buy the ad versions of the streaming platform; ie sell me crack instead of a pure prescription drug. I can afford them because I dropped cable and bought an antenna for local TV broadcasts. Local broadcasters hate that because they don't get their retransmission fees from cable or live TV streaming. I still have to watch ads on live TV but I DVR all the shows I want to see. On top of that I buy 4k UHD blurays of my favorite movies. I also collect and download movies via internet. 🏴‍☠⛵for archival purposes only. I hate censoring, so I like having digital and disc backups.

I mean, you might as well this point just fucking pirate everything and make everyone's suffer the consequences of pure greed. At least when it comes to them, trying to push streaming as having no alternative. Or just buy physical. I feel like as an American. We have way too many damn choices anyways. The way streaming has made things. It's sad because it's like we are not appreciators of fine art anymore. At least not when it comes to streaming. We have just become caught in the madness of mindless consumerism. How can you really appreciate anything if all you do mindlessly consume? Like for me personally, out of my 70 somethings physical games (not counting several hundred digital), I have literally several PlayStation 5 games and Switch games still in its shrink wrapping. Some games I may never play. I have accepted this. Simply put, there's too much to watch too much to play too much to listen to and not enough time to do it. I think at this point I would rather just have less is more. A pure focus on quality rather than quantity. But that's how it is with music. That's how it is with gaming. That's how it is with movies. It's just too much shit. We don't need these many fucking choices. We were never supposed to spend our lives in front of a TV. I know what i'm saying is falling on deaf ears for most people.

Yup i left cable for the commercials and bullshit. Now streaming is exactly the same as cable and even worse. Good for them because I’m done with streaming and I canceled most of my streaming services. They will not be able to sustain people on their platforms when they don’t cater to the customers. People are fed up with bullshit cable and advertising. People just want entertainment when they want it. Them putting commercials in streaming just makes me get up and stop watching so keep it up 😂. Not only that used to be worth it for streaming. Could have alll the apps for $30 a month and NOW you need $30 JUST to get the 4K version on EACH app lol. I mean they are realllly killing streaming. All it did was jump me back into physical media again and I’m not stopping. Physical media is going into a hugee resurgence right now like the height of the covid hobby era. Physical media is flying off the shelves. Releases are selling out in the first week of pre-orders. They have already killed streaming. If they want people back have to get rid of pay/view quality, less ads/none, less BULLSHIT. Otherwise streaming will be dead. These companies do NOT want you to have physical media or anything owned in your life. They want to control everything in your lives. They just keep pushing the limits to see who they can get. Stop falling into the trap. Get your own everything and stop being dependent on studios, on the government, on everything.

It seemed that way when they started appearing in Walmarts but there was a very healthy boutique market for new Vinyl way back in 2013ish I think, I was there when vinyl records started being pressed again can’t remember the exact year but it took almost a decade or so for LPs to breach the mainstream and come back full force. We will see a similar resurgence for movies on physical media, boutique boom right now, mainstream penetration will come later no doubt.

Thank you! I appreciate the subscription and the kind words and I 100% agree! I think as people see these 4k restorations and all of these extra features, they will begin to see the better quality and more value than digital, more of the true cinema experience that digital misses just like with records vs cds and digital downloads

My boss had been searching high and low on streaming services for the Super Mario movie but couldnt find it anywhere. So I told him i could borrow him my blu ray of it if he wanted, and he happily obliged. It was a good moment. 😄

Way more of it exists on physical media than on streaming...Netflix for example is down to just over 3k total titles counting tv shows and their original content...Blockbuster and Hollywood video carried between 10k and 12k titles per store

@@AVAPopCulture a lot of the hardcore cult classic stuff like the 80s b rate stuff have no current psychical release. Now you're not going to find it on a netflix or an amazon either. Maybe Tubi lol You can find some around the Internet Archive if you dig but a lot is just posted out there in the wild free. Just kinda people putting it up and saving it before its lost to time.
