So, I grew up in a tiny village in New Zealand. There's 180 houses and about 450 people. Until recently the internet there was awful. We climbed trees and took ourselves to the river to swim without adults around. I feel old saying this, but kids these days will never know the thrill of unsupervised fun like we had. 😎

I’m American but I’m 28 too and I think we really were the last generation to enjoy a “normal” internet free childhood and I am actually so grateful for that. I feel kinda bad for kids today. Also, one of the first KZbinrs I ever watched was Irish his name was BriBry he was my first “introduction” to Irish culture and watching you reminds me of that time in my life😂

It definitely does. For instance, I always think Irish-English is more poetic because it inherited the structures of the Irish language, which is less direct than in English.

I'm so pleased you mentioned how the internet is changing language! This struck me a while ago, we're actually losing language, when you watch KZbin, the vast majority of people who do, for example, make up channels, all use the same terms , the same descriptions...seem to have no ability to speak in a way that reflects their personalities, their localities...it's a shame. I watch a few cooking channels, many in the US...they tend to be hosted by older people, or the ones I watch seem to be, & I really enjoy the different accents, the different expressions some elderly hunting guy in Tennessee uses compared to a lady in Vermont. It would be very sad if younger people grow up all learning to sound the same.

Garron your reminiscing made me reflect on my own Irish childhood and I felt quite sad. I’m 51 so a fair bit older than yourself. I was out from morning till night beating jeggies with a big stick because it was great fun. Me and my friends just playing rounders, kick a tin and Kribby. Now for goodness sakes there’s never a child out! Anyway that’s my rant over. Loved this podcast. Thanks a million.

Jack Frost has always stood out among my childhood movie memories. It's one of the few movies I can remember going to the cinema for, and they even sold Jack Frost-themed rock candy. The older I've gotten, the more I feel that his deceased father's best friend is the true hero of the movie as it were (looks after his dead friend's wife and child with zero expectations in return). As for watching shows these days, it's true I mostly watch things on streaming services, but never more than around 3 episodes before I say that's enough until next week. I think you can digest the show better that way and get more out of each episode, plus you can still get a smaller version of the thrill of having to wait to find out what happens next.

I grew up in a somewhat poor household money wise in the gda and because of that ive lived what i feel is somewhat half an irish childhood half internet child hood, because of the one big old crt tv and movies and games from the last generation when all my friends in school have the xbox one i still had the 360 until everyone switched to ps4 pros, Im 17 now gonna be 18 in 9 months and i feel much older then people my own age but i still like the same modern things the still feel too young to be interestied in my main interests

Loved Dustin the Turkey, I bought his version of 'Good looking woman' with Joe Dolan ( RIP Joe) pretty sure i still have the CD lol. I grew up watching Bosco and Zig & Zag with Ray Darcy. I am 8 years older than you. I had a Pokedex too, I was 11 when Pokemon started. I live in the south of Co.Down but we could get RTE 1 & 2 lol. The Morbegs, I had kinda forgotten about it even though I watched it quite a lot. I have a nephew who lives in Belfast and he has an English/American accent thanks to KZbin....it's mad! Aw god I loved Jack Frost with Michael Keaton too, I bawled! Made me love the song Landslide by the Dixie Chicks because of that film.

My daughter is 26 I used to make her go outside to play and would get ‘I’m bored’ I would be out there too growing vegetables. She didn’t enjoy helping, eventually she discovered ‘making dens’ she did this on her own. When her friends discovered it, they started inviting themselves to our house to play outside! We had sky tv but I limited her viewing to an hour a day. She is an avid reader and loves her own company and is a lover of nature. I love KZbin, but I do think it isn’t great for my brain as those shorts are addictive and they are not great for concentration! Gattath is a gemstone and I’m definitely going to be listening to more of his podcast!

It’s interesting that the format of the local youth television programming was similar in Canada. Like “The Den”, we had “The Zone” on YTV in the ‘90s with presenters called “PJs”. Depending on the hour of the day, the programming was targeted to a particular age group (i.e. 3-6, then 7-11, and so on).
