It's that old adage: your friends' friends are not always your friends. Over the years, India has drifted towards the United States, partly due to its border tensions with China. But even the invasion of Ukraine cannot break the historic ties binding Delhi to Moscow - from arms and oil imports to the non-aligned strategic autonomy that steered India through the Cold War. So can India stay out of it? Can anyone? If nations don't actively oppose an invasion, do they enable it?

The question isn't "Can India stay out?". The question is "Can the West stay out of India's personal business and avoid losing the important alliance of India against China?". The West triggered Russia by NATO expanding Eastward. Now they are losing their sleep by wanting for India to disrupt their relationship with Russia which India relies on for cheap affordable defence systems and oil - while US increased their purchase of Russian oil and Europe continues to buy Russian gas

What none of the commentators mentioned, but something Jen Psaki has clarified, India is NOT violating any US sanctions. Oil and gas have been kept out of sanctions list, as Europe will freeze without Russian oil and gas. Europe keeps buying 50 times (or more) oil and gas than India, including since the start of the war.

Afghanistan exit without considering India's security was the driving factor as Indian foreign minister pointed out yesterday; that was India's Russia-Ukraine situation but west was mild there and this situation which is quite strong for the west seems mild to the other side of the world. When China recently tried to invade India's east, no one came to rescue but the Indian army and at the end Indians gained a height advantage and China had to back off. It seems to me like everyone is at its own in the current world and must strengthen their security and economy and that's what India seems to be doing. I don't blame them as they have a billion people to feed and such a huge country has never been given a permanent chair at UNSC.

The point is: foreign policy of every country is motivated by their own interests and priorities rather than (hypocritical) morals of Western Europeans and USA. India may be buying Russian oil at 30% discount however if you looks at shipping routes from RU to IND, that 30% will barely offset the cost for ships to encircle the continent compared to the majority of oil we purchase from Middle East. Also, since the shipping route goes through South China Sea, India will NEVER increase its dependency on it as it will end up giving China a huge leverage against India.
