It's a bit surreal to come back to this video. 8 years ago I stumbled upon this and have followed the advice exactly, along with much of Aaron's advice. It's 2023 and I can retire at the age of 35. No debt, no mortgage, no wife, no kids. Planning my road trip to the southwest just like Cappy did. Thank you Aaron.

I bought 'Worthless' along with the audiobook. I want to know what books he reads personally because I am in agreement with everything he talks about in these videos. I do have a worthless associates degree and although I don't have any real debt I'm considering learning a trade instead of going back to school. Even if just to learn a real, marketable skill.
@moonrice555
@moonrice555 8 жыл бұрын
+BatBrakesBones Dude, I regret going to college. I think it is fine for specific fields, but to just get a degree because you're "supposed to" is bullshit. I work in the public school systems and they actually have banners on the walls practically brainwashing the kids into believing you are a worthless sack of shit without a degree. Here is how one banner reads---and I'm not making this up: It is not a question of IF college, but WHICH college. Can you taste the bile?
@BatBrakesBones
@BatBrakesBones 8 жыл бұрын
+moonrice555 Yeah, going into debt for something that won't pay off and has no real world application, is a huge no-no. I only wish they taught the importance of mastering a skill/craft in school rather than making people feel like they would be worthless without a degree. Not everyone is meant to be in college. I went to school with people who obviously had no business being there. They were just there because they felt pressured by society. I missed out on thousands of dollars that I could've been working for while attending school. The only reason I don't regret it is because I got it "out of my system," so to speak. My goals are much clearer, now.

I am 26, never had any debt, no Credit card. I never understood this Credit card thing in the bank, always asked for Debit one. Paying my rent and live "poor life" minimalist way. I buy cheap, but good, and only in need. Don't mind having same outfit on me, or living in studio apartment, less than apartment with endless rooms you are not using and bigger rent... No car here, only bike. I don't mind living poor, you can have a want for everything, but people nowadays don't know that want is not all the time need. Credit is good only for bankers and want for sellers. Yes, some will stop friending you, because you lack fancy car or two, big house and material objects... but if the people are wanting you because what you have - they are not right people. Live poor, and stay happy, because the opposite never works!

I'm on the last house I'll ever own. Its a ripoff anymore. Govts. keep taping into property taxes because you can't move that fast, and then if the property stops going up because of high taxes, now you can't sell it either. My sister's in this dilemma in MIlw. There's much cheaper alternatives. New car? Forget it. Even college, work your way through, go through community college. Ya, single guy here. I still wanted a house though. I have this fetish about gardening and fruit trees. But the house payment plus tax and insurance is cheaper than rent anyway. If I lost the house I would have still enjoyed the cheaper living costs during the time I lived here. I bought my first home (a condo) that was cheaper than I could afford. Paid extra and paid it off in 11 years. So the house payment is 1050, minus the profit from the rental condo it's 670, minus a small rental income from one of my extra rooms it's 420 a month. That's a heck of a deal to live in a nice house on a half acre lot, and the place is all mine! When I cut a hole in the wall for an automatic dog door, I didn't have to ask anyone. And that's the way I managed to get an income to spending ratio of about 50%. That leaves about 2200 a month as a total surplus. You should post a bitcoin address, I'd kick in a donation from time to time if you did. And the profit from a donation would be a heck of a lot more than the little bit you'd get if I bought your book.

When I went to buy a house, I had cash and solid everything. The sticking point that almost kept financing from going through was my credit score wasn't great. Also about 650. A woman from the bank told me the problem was I had practically no credit history in the past 5 years. I said 'But that's because I have no debt." I asked her "So... I'd be in better shape here if I actually owed more money to more people?" She paused a few seconds, then reluctantly said "Mmm.... Actually, yes."

Wise words from your experience. I have two vehicles- an 87 Chevy (easy to fix) and an 89 truck ( 320K miles, also cheap to fix.) No loans. Cheaper insurance that way. Property tax on a house- hundreds a month. Property tax on 20 acres with a trailer-- hundred a year. If I could do over-- I would buy rural acres- a place to keep my stuff, maybe keep it rented to cover taxes and utilities. Then just rent a room near the city for work projects. I remember paying thousands a month to live in NY-- that could have paid off a piece of land in a year.

Your videos are great, but, unless it's too personal, would you please clarify something? You said you shouldn't own property, but at 9:45 you state that the only debt you have is your mortgage. Is your mortgage for rental/investment property, or is it for a house you now regret purchasing? The only thing I disagree with you is that if you don't buy your house, you'll likely need to rent, and rental agencies generally pull your credit bureau report prior agreeing to rent an apartment to you.
@sixwingproductions
@sixwingproductions 7 жыл бұрын
however the mortgage is still cheaper on a monthly basis. the 360 a month mortgage is cheaper than the 700 a month apartment that does not include utilities. the average american worker in my experience, takes home no more than 2000 a month, my self and most people i know only bring in 1300. due to this everyone has roommates or their spouse is also forced to work. in order to live comfortably you need to make between 2000 and 3000 a month in that apartment, and that is just so you can save for retirement, pay the ultilitys and not have to choose between gas and food. wages are stagnant which means thanks to inflation they are declining, and the cost of living is going up.

Good video. I agree that NEEDING a good credit score is stupid. However, when I moved to a new city for work, there was a housing shortage because everyone else had moved there for the same purpose. So to rent a room in a shared apartment, the landlords would check your credit rating, which was really fucking annoying because I don't outspend my earnings and thus have no need for credit, thus don't have much of a credit score.

Great video, Aaron! I agree with you on all accounts, except one thing...the majority of those property management companies look at your credit score when you are renting one of their units, which makes sense cause they need to see how reliable a tenant you are when paying rent on time. The only other difference would just be to rent from the owner directly...provided he isn't using a property management company to manage his property.

If you want to live a simple life and not really accomplish anything than yes go for no debt, but if you want to start a small business it is very hard to raise the capital by yourself. There is a concept of good debt that is used to produce assets like purchasing machinery for your factory to increase output by 10% of your product while reducing labor costs and bad debts that just add to liabilities like consumerism.

If you move to a market where the is a housing shortage, landlords may not let you rent apartments if you have a bad credit score, or refuse to let them check your score. At least that's what happened to me when I moved to a new area for work. I had enough cash to pay the deposit and several month's of rent, but was refused solely because of the credit score. The landlord didn't trust me because of the score, even though I had enough cash in hand to pay for everything.

Couldn't agree more with the vehicle aspects of what you said. And the living aspect as well. I've always lived in shared accommodation. Pay for a room. The only reason I'm contemplating property now is purely as an investment. E.g. rent it, or live in it and rent out other rooms. Australia seems to be on the verge of a property market correction, so it's probably not the ideal time to buy just yet.

The only part I'm not on board with is the blanket statement to not own a house. There are a number of hobbies, interests, businesses that you will need to own your own place to have. Try learning to grow food, have a workshop, or work on your car over at the apartment complex. Good luck with that. His point about buying in a big city is well taken, but if you rent in a big city, you're just paying someone else's jacked up property taxes instead of your own jacked up property taxes. Stick to places that won't jack your taxes to the moon for a bunch of nonsense whether you buy or rent. I do agree with his credo of "reconnoiter" an area before moving there. I also agree with advice I heard to live in a place six months and be reasonably sure your job or whatever you're doing will work out for the next few years before getting a place. You don't want to buy a place, then be trying to sell it 8 months later bc the rug got pulled.

I disagree with over 90% of the things you say but I do agree with you about the importance of living a debt-free life, not incurring any debt unless absolutely necessary (education, medically necessary procedure). The real reason why you want to live a debtless life: debt is slavery. Mohammaed understood this very clearly which was why he put so much importance in avoiding debt. Financial experts hav elong said that homeownership is oftne not the best investment you can make with your money, this is nothing new. I'm a lot older than you are and I've been debt-free for over 18 years, never, ever owned a credit card of any type in my entire life, never owned a house or car of any kind. I'm with you about not caring what people think of your credit score. I don't care what people think of mine either.

I tried to buy my first car used, but I bought a new one after looking at many used cars and finding it hard to decide based on what I got for the money and what was available and I needed a car fast. I probably could have gone to more dealerships.

Sound advice, for sure. I use credit cards for the rewards and pay them off every month. American Express Preferred gives 6% cash-back on groceries which is pretty damn sweet (on EVERYTHING in a grocery store...buy a gas gift card and get 6% cash-back. Going to GameStop? Buy a GameStop gift card and get 6% cash-back) Got a used FRS (I know, it was a poor financial decision) but 1.9% APR isn't too bad. Drove a 2002 Ranger for 11 years...and put thousands into it. Really need to brush up on some mechanical skills (air intake manifold, ball joints, CPU, etc...don't think I could replace those myself even if I knew what I was doing). One area where credit does matter is deposits and how much things can cost. Seems like utility departments, cable providers, and everyone and their mother check your credit score. Instead of a $200 deposit to turn the electricity on, I only paid $25. But by all means....you are better off being debt free. On the Muslim note about debt: One of the reasons I believe bankruptcy used to last 7 years is because of the Old Testament tradition (in the Torah I believe) of forgiving all debt and freeing slaves every 7 years. If you didn't pay your debt off, you might not get credit again but at least you had a fresh start. Mohammad probably abolished debt because of the type of people He was sent to teach (the pagans at this point and time were burying their daughters alive, and doing bunches of other dumb shit....), and wanted them to be free and elevated individuals--not slaves to the merchants and ideologies of their ancestors.

I keep a credit card in case I ever lose my checking card like if left in an ATM. Was on vacation overseas and had to cancel a lost card , credit card covered my ass. I know it's not money I made by the sweat of my brow so it doesn't get used but for such emergencies.

You're wrong about immigrants. Immigrants are very entrepreneurial. They left their socialist countries to come to the 'land of opportunity' to make a better life for themselves and their children. Steven Harper has managed to revive conservatism in Canada by courting the support of immigrants who appreciate his low tax, free enterprise message.

AaronClarey Don't get me wrong, it took time. Steven Harper and the Conservatives worked for nearly 10 years to take those votes away from the Liberals since previous generations of Conservatives got their kicks bashing immigrants just like Republicans do with the Latinos today. (Seriously, most Latinos have a strong work ethic, are often religious and have strong family values. How are Republicans not courting those votes?) The only reason immigrants vote Democrat is because Republicans show them such hostility. If the Republicans reached out to those voters they could win them over.

nobody has a problem with immigrants who came legally. And its true they tend to start businesses. We have a a different geography. People can walk into America and game the welfare system without opposition.

You’d probably want to do equity financing instead of debt anyway. If you were going to buy a business, you’d use debt, but the financials of the business are what matter in that case.

First of all my question to you is why brag about CREDIT in America when you can resign and live overseas? Second of all Americans for the most part are not very good at saving money and lack financially. My solution is this, as a dual citizen of the United States Of America and Mexico I can decide to live in Tijuana, Mexico and work in SAN Diego, CA. Oh and America why not move to another foreign country?another thing if you don't appreciate an enslaved society like
