The main reason healthcare is so expensive is because of socialized healthcare programs (although the obesity epidemic burdening the system isn't helping). When health care providers see clients with Medicare and Medicaid cards, they realize they can charge whatever they want because Daddy Government is paying for it. Fire departments existed before states became willing to funnel tax dollars into fire departments. In fact, just about all of the services that people interact on a local level came into being before states were willing to use public funding to support them. The free market creates services, when those services are noted to be of value politicians decide to run on platforms based around socializing those services in order to win elections. If he has not already, handsome Sheamus could probably put together a historical description of several of these developments.
@1978garfield Жыл бұрын
The history of fire departments is fascinating. FWIW I have heard of many rural areas where you purchase fire department coverage annually. If you don't pay your bill and have a fire the FD shows up to the closest address that is covered in case the flames spread from your house. They then set and watch your house burn. Tough but fair.

@niggy7306 жыл бұрын
Do you think this applies also when say a white bar or restaurant owner denies service to a black person, or vice versa? I know in theory the market will answer with that the bar or restaurant that allows both races will out-compete the other ones and thus the problem solves itself. In practice however, it is not as simple. Many other factors play a part and we know for a fact that (through history) that the market fails in such situations, since a white bar owner might lose all white customers if he allows black folks in, thus the market becomes racist. Maybe you are a hard-liner and don't see that as a problem at all, but I think most people think apartheid is a bad thing, regardless if people choose to segregate freely or not. What do you think?
@L3GN5RW96 жыл бұрын
Nils Lundgren Obviously, racism is evil and wrong. However, I don't think that the government should have the power to dictate to business owners whom they must serve. Businesses fail or succeed based on consumers' responses to business decisions; sometimes those decisions are controversial. However, the important principle is that people have property rights, and they should be able to choose the people they engage in economic exchange with. It's all about freedom.
@philmartinez87046 жыл бұрын
Understand the philosophy in this way, if the government has the right to protect everybody to do business with it has the power to thus segregate. Meanwhile if all businesses conducted themselves as the owner dictates then really it's just the better service will out compete the Lesser. If there's a restaurant that only serves to Black customers the competing restaurant across the street that serves to all Races will very likely out compete the racist black restaurant. I think having said this I do find it rather orwellian that Silicon Valley Tech Giants such as Twitter Tumblr KZbin and Google can limit the ideas of conservatives drastically more than they limit liberals. In fact there seems to be an overwhelming sense of favoritism for Liberal ideals. It seems as though most Libertarians are for private businesses to conduct their own businesses however they feel up until they're asked what about tech Giants limiting your freedom of speech?
@niggy7306 жыл бұрын
You seemed to miss the point I made about market failures and how the restaurant that serves to all races might lose all customers because the customers are racist and thus won't go to a mixed restaurant. You might call it self-segregation or whatever you like. I'm glad you mentioned silicon valley censorship, it's one of the situations where the phrase "they're a private business, they can do what they want" simply doesn't cut it. In my opinion this is where the dogmatic libertarianism fails. I truly think government interference is required in that particular instance.

Wow that was frustrating to watch, because modern liberalism seems to obsess over racism, sexism and classism. Capitalism is more concerned with trades, supply and demand. The very structure of capitalism is supported by the propagation of wealth, where as modern liberalism seeks to support poverty. Capitalism generates wealth for all where modern liberalism intends to define our economic subjugation. The modern liberal, the socialist, the communist, confuse me. Because they all claim to offer systems of social order that determine an equitable dividend for all but none shall may have control of. So I am cool for now because I am wealthy but if I find the means to generate greater personal wealth, I should not have control over that wealth? Even if the spending of such wealth already contributes to the prosperity of others who participate within the same capitalist society? I just don't understand leftist philosophy or why there are so many that religiously cling these concepts of social economic subjugation as if these social orders were the messiah? Capitalism does not socially or economically subjugate people. Nearly every individual has abilities that may be marketed to achieve any measure of wealth a market demand may reward for applicable production and services. There are always ladders climb and even ladders that may be created. Maybe if we taught each generation how to generate and manage wealth instead of teaching people how to be resentful of those who generate and manage greater wealth? Public education has failed.

It’s basically the best example of why America should cut the Department of Education
@enderkoregameing80903 жыл бұрын
When those who are wealthy find ways to exploit the people into generating more wealth for them, they will. Exploitation is profitable and systems are in place that teach the people to become cogs in the machine instead of teaching them to build their own machines, because competition is bad for the elites. PURE capitalism will subjugate people as much as it can to extract as much value from them as possible. It will also not allow developments to things that would better society if it isn't profitable. But to truly allow freedom to the people, a society with a mixed economy with the main law being no treading on the people's rights by anyone, tyrannical government or tyrannical corporations, is the best solution for the betterment of society and the improvement of the world.

fun fact: relating to gun control when they compare gun licences to drivers licences you only need a drivers licence to drive on state roads not private property meanwhile a gun licence when required by law is required to posses one on private property as well, so the more accurate comparison would be a concealed carry permit please be sure to express that to the next leftist who makes the drivers licence argument in the gun debate (yes i know this had nothing to do with guns but the drivers licence bit at the beginning reminded me of this)

Actually the first fire fighters we're private. It's where the idea for fire fighters came from. They were Roman.

@German Pepe I don't think there was only one group owned by one person but that sounds flashy enough to be something the Romans would do.

+German Pepe no. The leader, Crassus was purposely burning down towns and forcing people to sell their property to him for cents on the dollar and would defeat the fire right before the fire reached the town. He had a monopoly on this power as he was a high ranking statesman and general. He was later captured by the Sassanids after a catastrophic defeat in battle and forced to drink molten gold as a fitting and poetic punishment for his crimes.

The Shitpost King Well I don’t live there anymore, but you can look up Exeter MO volunteer fire dept. I don’t exactly know how it works, like I think they do get paid if they go out to a call, though it may not be much, but it’s basically all volunteer, and our electric company is non profit.

My town also has a volunteer fire dept as well as many others in the area, they are funded by donations and fundraisers they have 3 trucks (its a pretty small town, its rare to use use all 3 at the same time) Fire-gear breathing apparatus etc... all the equipment you would expect. All the members have pagers and whenever a fire-call goes out they get paged, all the members who can make it to the fire-hall do so. Then suit up and go out to the call. I've lived here for 15 years and while there have been several fires that necessitated their intervention, there has never been a fire which needed to be dealt with that they failed to deal with. It's the people who think that volunteer actions don't work who are living in a delusional state.
@richardthompson38716 жыл бұрын
Mine does too. They have turkey shoots at the fire department for fundraising. They do a good job, and get a lot of voluntarily donations from the logging industry.

Same here mate, as someone who isn't religious, the fact that two churches, one state funded, one that was basically in this old mexican couples garage (so obviously not state funded) took me and my wife in, fed us, and took care of us until we got back on our feet, really did open my eyes. On the other hand, the whole reason we were homeless was due to us being (by legal definition) human trafficked by people, so, kinda evens out. Some people suck, some people are wonderful, generous, kind human beings.

@@AryanSingh-ru8lg An Italian historian once made the point that there is no real difference between a government and the mafia. They both provide protection and social service to the community. But in return they take a cut of your profits. If you disagree you are met with violence. This is the main reason why the mafia is still going strong in southern Italy. Many people still consider the Italian government a foreign power meddling in their private affairs. Better a tyrant you know, as they say. Which I agree with to an extent, I think the only road to libertarian is first to increase localized power and reduce centralized power.

What I've learned watching this - Libertarian thinking is about personal responsibility. That's the underlying theme. Socialism is about paying the government to make decisions for you. I don't agree with _everything_ in libertarianism, but I also actually know what the party is for. Mostly I just don't want toll roads. I'm good with everything else.
