I can't speak for gameplay and options as I ahven't tried them but lorewise I think the reset was great for the franchise, giving them much richer characters to work with. I really love the changes to characters like Baraka and Reptile, who went from barely being on my radar to new favorites. Even lesser changed characters like Cage and Kitana are given much more nuance. Kudos to the writers and I look forward to what they do with the Earthforce characters and others in later installments.

All the 3D-era references and especially that entire last sequence felt like the story was tailor-made to appeal to me. Great stuff. Make sure you see the arcade mode endings, they're all canon this time. Lots of setup for future stuff. Reiko's in particular is a big one.

Great two-parter, Matt. I agree with you about a non-fighter MK game; I think this one has created a really interesting world and while a Lin-Kuei game would be cool...I'd like to see Mortal Kombat do an RPG similar to Jade Empire, but with a better combat system as well. An Assassin's Creed type MK Ninja game would be awesome too, though, especially if the assassinations were various, brutal and environment contextual.

FYI the bizarre amalgamation characters in the final chapter are pulled randomly from a pool so there are different ones every time you play it. The characters have some unique moves even! There are at least 3 variants of Ninja-mime!

Wow, I loved the campaign, but I agree it ended kinda meekly. It didn't have a big dumb boss to beat. Blaze is lame sure, but at least you can make a big dumb boss fight with him. Just something other then Shang Tsung again. Like, we couldn't get Onaga? Or Shinnok? JUST SOMETHING DIFFERENT? I must say though, despite that, this actually has got me interested in the MK universe again. I love the direction they took with characters. Especially Baraka and Reptile, who I always felt were just there to be the jobbers you use for practicing fatalities. Giving them some pathos (and in the case of Baraka, a really tragic limited time to live if the disease is as deadly as they've said) feels nice. BUT, Darius and Khameleon? They got shafted. I know nothing about those characters yeah, but I still feel really bad for them.

Yeah, this campaign was a lot of fun. There was more light-hearted moments and less frustrating moments than the previous 3 games. That's why I say it's better than the other three combined (though I will admit Aftermath's ending was a great time). Not perfect, but still a good ride. My tier list otherwise is X > 11 > 9. X I consider decent just for taking some risks with the Kombat Kids and really exploring them throughout. The other two were just not good experiences for me at all, especially as someone who really didn't get into MK stuff until the 3D era and found them too anti-3D era.
