I'm curious to know how you feel about the Madea movie franchise? They've always been a proponent of "funny movie, but also let's bring attention to these horrible struggles that people deal with every day" And it's definitely inspiring a lot of the "PSA comedies" that have come out, and I understand why someone wouldn't enjoy watching it, but I think that's the point? The daily horrors that people face that don't get talked about because they're in a minority, or otherwise overlooked in society, sandwiched in funny so that people listen. Would you consider these comedies still, or a different genre on it's own entirely, and are they less enjoyable as movies because of it? Again, just really curious to hear your thoughts!!!

To paraphrase what a producer said recently, it used to be that there were three major studios and 23 great writers. Now with streaming there are hundreds of major studios, and 23 great writers.
@Scantronimus4664 ай бұрын
Don’t forget the recent strike settlement now *requires* productions have a certain amount of writers. So if each show needs to have 10 writers, those 23 good writers are either getting used up quick or will be diluted by the bad ones.
@elleofhearts84714 ай бұрын
that doesn't answer for the thousands or tens of thousands of screenwriters who haven't had a chance to show their potential. If the studios are lacking writers, theyre the ones who have the most power than anyone in the whole structure, to open the door for more already talented writers to be seen and/or to further develop the talent of writers with potential. A shortage of good writers is a problem the studios created and won't solve themsleves. There's not a shortage of writing talent outside the establishment, but you do have to go outside of the establishment to find it. If studios refuse to do that, then the writer shortage is their own fault that they can only remedy. I don't feel bad for the studios and I'm not watching shit movies by studios who are too chickenshit to take risks when they can clearly see the age old formula doesn't work anymore.
@PowerfulLeadahYas-Yas2 ай бұрын
@elleofhearts8471 this is so true. I went to film school in the 90s, and while I don't consider myself a great writer (camera is more my thing) I do know several excellent writers (in LA) who are very clever, but none of them ever managed to get a film deal... Well actually one of them did but after his (pretty good) comedy film was auctioned at Slamdance it was buried by the studio. The studios are incredibly selective in who they decide to champion. And talent is not the primary metric.

The Academy Awards, popularly known as the Oscars, got their nickname from a legend involving Margaret Herrick, a librarian and later executive director for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. In 1931, when she first saw the statuette, she reportedly exclaimed that it looked like her Uncle Oscar. This anecdote spread, and by 1939, the Academy officially adopted the name. Another version of the story credits actress Bette Davis, who claimed the statue reminded her of her first husband, Harmon Oscar Nelson.

I’ll say in terms of recent comedy movies, Bottoms starring Rachel Sennott and Ayo Edebiri was probably the funniest movie I’ve seen in years. It’s gloriously chaotic, the jokes were flying a mile a minute, Marshawn Lynch as a teacher was comedy gold, and it did a great job turning the conventions of high school comedies on its head. It didn’t get that much of a push due to it coming out during the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes, but I think it’s a future cult classic that’ll gain more appreciation in the coming years.

@@XMooMooMonkeyX That makes me think of 3 excerpts from the movie reviewer Vince Mancini's review of Bottoms. "Having just seen Bottoms, directed by Emma Seligman (born in 1995), I now have fresh hope that maybe Gen Z nihilism will save comedy. Bottoms, a sort of lesbian riff on Superbad by way of Heathers with a Fight Club angle, is the most chaotic, anarchic comedy I’ve seen in years, a cinematic barely-in-tune punk band with anthemic choruses and drums like a guy falling down stairs. It’s affirming not for telling you what you already know, but for selling the dream that you too can maybe make something this weird and smart and stupid and it will somehow come together through sheer force of vibes. Beyond its natural pugnacity, Bottoms has a level of craft far beyond the utilitarian, center-framed sitcom style that has come to dominate comedy in the age of easy affirmation. Many of Bottoms’ scenes feature a foreground conversation driving the plot, using the background action as a canvas for as many sight gags as Seligman and co. can squeeze in-like the school’s anatomically correct mascot with a huge dong. Social hot buttons and pure scatology are always battling for supremacy in Bottoms, with a joke density that would make the Zucker Brothers jealous. I wanted to rewatch it before I was even done watching it just to catch all the jokes. Best of all, it feels un-focused grouped, like its natural weirdness was just allowed to exist without being sanded into bland conformity. There’s a rudeness to Bottoms that’s been missing from the last five or ten years of comedies. On paper, a comedy created by a brain trust who were born when I was leaving middle school should make me feel old, but Bottoms mostly just made me feel alive."

Alright, my oldness now has a use! So, one thing you missed was the fact that there were all of the video stores back in the day that gave comedies a different revenue stream than now. You didn't pay a streaming service one price a month, you had to consciously say, "I'm renting Napoleon Dynamite tonight." and then put up the cash specifically for THAT film. The distributor got to sell a ton of copies to the video store for rent and sale, the video store then recouped costs by having finite rental inventory that was essentially recycled to the point of big profits off of relatively small inventory compared to other commercial ventures, like department stores. Then, there's also the fact that without people being used to going to comedies in theatres, there's no cultural touchstones like there was in my day. Say what you will about any of the problematic pieces in American Pie 1 & 2, but people flocked to that movie to laugh in a large crowd, together. Laughter is contagious and even a mediocre a comedy benefits from that sort of engagement. I'd like to see more absurdist comedies, like Airplane and Naked Gun, again. I know that Naked Gun is being remade, but I mean getting new ones. They typically had some stunts and sensationalism worth going to the theatre for, but they were straight forward just comedies. I very much miss them.

Yes! And also, Naked Gun... I'm sorry but no one can do Leslie Nielson but Leslie Nielson. I honestly don't follow comedians, but back in the day, we knew the comedic actors. Robin Williams, Eddy Murphy, etc. You just knew you'd be laughing or at least smiling when they were on screen at some point. I don't know of any newer actors known for their comedy these days. At least none that have left a lasting impression enough for me to name them off the top of my head... Come to think of it, I don't think I've genuinely laughed at something on screen (that was being funny on purpose) in a really long time. I think it was when I watched the first season of Future Man.

I enjoyed the comedy in Everything Everywhere All at Once. I think that’s what made it so successful … it was such a wild story with so much going on, but the delivery of the comedic lines made it so enjoyable. I found myself giggling at the driest of humor they’d display, but the actors seemed to take their roles serious to where it felt real. I felt transported into their story. …compared to watching yet another Adam Sandler movie of grown adults doing things the vast majority of people watching can never relate to where it just feels like it’s just background noise….because that is exactly what it ends up being as I get so bored watching those styles of movies that I end up doing other shite, which is a bummer because comedies (even the terrible ones) were okay to watch in the 90s and 00s. Even the “so bad it’s really bad, but also good in a sense that you can turn your brain off and enjoy following along” types. Most comedies now are either way too sanitized or way too boomer-y with stale jokes and a lot of whining.

On the “art reflects society” point: i REFUSE to believe audiences everywhere just want everything explained to them all the time, or only politically correct jokes. I think that’s what the studios believe will make a great movie, and the fact that they won’t even try to get them on the big screen shows how afraid they are of the response. They are basically creating on the presumption that twitter will flame them for anything even a bit out of the norm. The Pitch Meeting guy said it best on the “Hunger Games: The ballad of songbirds and snakes” video: “-People have been clamoring for some new hunger games content. -They have? -Well, no, but that is a title with some brand recognition which is always safer than something original. I AM SCARED ALL THE TIME. -Hey, this industry was built by risk takers and now it’s our job to calm that down a little bit.”
@Josh_Quillan6 ай бұрын
If art doesn't reflect society it's not art, it's "cOnTeNt". Studios have never wanted 'great', they just want 'profitable', but it was once the case that allowing talented people to do what they want made money and studios, being run by film guys, enjoyed the prestige of being seen as making art. But with them being run by money guys like Zazlav they have become so risk-averse and profit-focused and much less interested in artistic prestige, so they neuter, over-simplify and homogenize everything such that what they make is bland content that's as likely to make money as possible. It's not that anyone wants everything explained to them and only politically correct jokes, it's that those things are seen as the way to minimise risk.
@Gman19986 ай бұрын

Woke is a meaningless word. People apply it to anything they dislike. The majority of the people like Seinfeld who claim you can't make jokes anymore just can't be funny. Like when was Seinfeld the "edgy outsider"? Meanwhile It's Always Sunny was hugely popular and wildly offensive. The trick is making actual jokes and not just complaining that you'd be telling such funny jokes if only those damned woke barbarians weren't waiting at the gates of laughter!
@THCMusicBlog6 ай бұрын
probably true in the sense that companies are trying to appeal to too large of an audience so they can recoup the cost of making the movie, tech advancements and competition like youtube and streaming services also play a part. but companies have always been focused on making money and maximizing the bottom line, good movies make the most money either way. shoehorned activism and political correctness of the scriptwriters AND the companies; and the threat of being boycotted is definitely a factor as well. companies try to make what they think the public want, and the loudest voices, however few, can sway that perception. there's a reason why most of the comedy classics from the past 4 decades can't be made today because they'd be boycotted the first week of release.

Movie studios didn't have as many producers rewriting the scripts back in the day. A script rewrite can water-down and kill a joke harder than it can destroy action, drama, adventure or romance.

Comedy is definitely one of the hardest movie genres, because pretty much everything (writing, delivery/timing, editing, even the musical score) has to be just right. Almost every other genre can get by reasonably well by just filling 90 minutes with every trope in the book, and some can get by being so bad they end up being good/funny, but a bad comedy is usually just...bad-bad.
@alwayz4evr6 ай бұрын
I really wish you’d mentioned Shane Black’s 2016 ‘The Nice Guys’ - yes it is partially a blend of thriller comedy but it is 100% a masterclass in comedy and absolutely CARRIED in terms of joke set up, delivery, character, comedic timing. Crowe and Gosling and frankly fucking brilliant and I don’t think there’s a better pure comedy film been made recently than that. If you’re worried comedy is dead there is hope

His movies are so generic, repetitive and formulaic, maybe the earlier ones had heart, but I was just tired of seeing his movies heing repeated on tv, as if there was nothing else to watch, at least that happens in Latin America.
@twistedlittlepuppy6 ай бұрын
@@jesustovar2549 I heard (not sure if it's true or not tbh) that Sandler purposely sets his movies on islands like Hawaii to get a free vacation out of it. It's hard not to admire the hustle...

He’s more frustrating than bad, because he’s more than capable of making a good movie. “You Are So Not Invited To My Bat Mitzvah” is incredibly funny, even if you need to be steeped in the Reform Jewish culture in order to get the most out of it. It’s filled with heart and love, but so many of his other movies are just going through the motions.
