"Those are just facts. And at its best, America has never been about facts, it's been about belief. It's about looking at a fact and saying, 'No. No, No. I don't think so. Let's try something a little better than that.'" That's one of the most accurate summaries I've ever heard.

The funny thing is - after a pandemic and the greatest civil unrest in decades within 5 months, we still think we can make educated guesses about what's going to happen on 11/3 and beyond. It must be evolutionary advantageous, because on the surface, it makes us look like damn fools.

Despite what I've read from both "sides" in the comments; this is not anti-American; it's satire. Oliver has performed this same material to more uproarious applause in the United States. I'm sure some of my fellow Americans feel butt-hurt; but they needn't be. The Daily Show & Colbert satirize our news programming, Chappelle takes on the racial injustice & stigmas affecting our society, even Seinfeld (a show about nothing) pushed Gay Rights forward. Fear silence.

Ken Harvey sort of. What bugs me is why the Americans are so intolerant compared to why others are intolerant. Americans are stuck on race, and skin color and other stuff that doesn't mean a thing. Though also not very fair, european intolerance is a bit more complicated. Not necessarily just, but a mexican or an African American is certainly better off in Germany tolerance wise than the U.S.

You should look up John Oliver's deep dive about the national debt to learn about how it's really an arbitrary canard, a red herring, it's irrelevant considering the human needs that need to be resolved and the suffering that is still being perpetuated, those things have costs as well so as long as injustice exists really talking about a fictional debt is absurd. Pass it on.

You're an idiot. Yah, it sounds like he "loves America" it's the new generation.... They are COMPLETELY UNEDUCATED about politics and it's the reason our country is sinking... A long with the WORST PRESIDENT IN HISTORY. He's a liar and the sheeple of America can't even answer simple questions with any logical sense. "Why would u vote for Hillary " she's a women.... Hmmmm never mind she watched some of our finest DIE, and said WHAT DOES IT MATTER? Scandalous. She should be ROTTING in jail along with Barry and his pen. Then.... After years and years we may have a chance to turn it around with all the evil gone.

I am Canadian (of Indian origin) and lived in UK for a few years. I find Oliver is equally ruthless on his podcast The Bugle about British politics, especially the Royal family and Brexit. As an Indian, I find his critiques of Indian colonization by the Brits absolutely hysterical. Oliver is an equal opportunity satirist.

Americans in general don't get any more butthurt when their country is criticized than citizens of any other country get butthurt when their country is criticized. In any country, there will always be a certain conservative part of the population that is defensive and sensitive and will easily take offense. I am sure that there are plenty of English people who would be butthurt if you criticized England about certain things in their presence. This show is not offensive at all to any reasonable American. I think it's very funny and I really like John Oliver.

This is a comedy show--I think John Oliver has a pretty positive opinion of America in real life actually. I've seen him talk about it in an interview before, he does live here after all. The comedy sketch doesn't actually seem anti American either--sometimes comedy comes from good old fashioned self-deprecation and the exaggeration of stereotypes.

Eh, its just pandering. There are a lot of people out there that look at success with anger and jealousy. America is the most powerful nation in the world with the largest economy in the world. John Oliver is smart, and knows how to capitalize on the lesser nations' jealousy. But what country did John Oliver move to?
@ZlatkoTheGod
@ZlatkoTheGod 10 жыл бұрын
Eric S. Yeah i'm pretty sure Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Japan, New Zeeland, Australia you know, countries that work, are really damn jealous of you. Yup that must be it, it's totally that and not the imperialist nature of your politics or the complete immorality of your foreign policy that disgusts people over the world. Nope, they're obviously jealous.
@erics.4897
@erics.4897 10 жыл бұрын
ZlatkoTheGod Well...a majority of those countries are allies in our "imperialism". And when I say "ally", I mean supporters who have organizations that are led, planned, funded and implemented by the US. Maybe you're stupid, and not as well-informed as you think...because if you were, you'd be agreeing with my obviously factual statement. Where does John Oliver live, again? I want to say the US, because that's where a majority of successful people are, but he wouldn't support that type of "imperialism"....right?
@ZlatkoTheGod
@ZlatkoTheGod 10 жыл бұрын
Eric S. Correlation does not equal causation, in other words post hoc ergo propte hoc. In other other words, get over yourself, your country isn't the sole reason every other successful country in the world is successful. They are "allies" because anything other than that with a country that values its military more than its education system and on top of that got rich off of the world wars would be beyond stupid. That they're allies with you, doesn't mean that they like you. All of those countries I mentioned can be and have already been prosperous without you and will continue to be that without you, of course they will take a bit of damage in losing the US as a trade partner but then again, the US is not 90% of the world and China would more than gladly take your place anyways. BTW I love how you downplay the idea that US politics is a cesspool of idiocy and fascism based on the sole fact that the rest of the western world is in reluctant coalition with them (not that not wanting a war with a crazed superpower with 4000+ badly supervised nukes would have anything to do with Europe being the continent that was completely torn apart by the world wars instead of the one that took one blow and immediately forgot morality existed, and as a result of that doesn't want any more war, but hey I'm the uninformed idiot here so who am i to judge?) while your foreign policy includes making the god damn clear blue sky fucking terrifying to look at in some countries. And I also love the comic arrogance in that last sentence, really The Great and Powerful Trixie herself couldn't have said something more egocentric. And I'm not even commenting on the one where you literally say "you'd be agreeing with me if you weren't stupid. Classic.

Benny Alv Americans don't talk about GB because they don't care about and are almost completely unaware of it on the whole. I know this because I am an American. I would bet that most don't know who the prime minister is, or any of the current events (maybe Brexit) across the pond. There is a certain pride in ignorance here, it's on purpose, they don't know and to them it's a virtue because no country matters except America.

Unlike other countries like the UK, Australia, etc, the generalisation is that most Americans are too patriotic to appreciate humour that makes fun of their country, and I think that generalisation is rooted in a lot of truth. I don't think there would have been any place in the US willing to host a show like this considering the possible backlash, nor a station willing to televise it if there was.

It gets more and more stale every time I say it, but I'm getting kinda tired of the Coward France meme. If you lost over 4% of your population in one war- a so-called "war to end all wars"- how eager would you be to throw your people at another death machine just twenty years later? And I remember hearing about this one guy who thought he could conquer the world... what was his name? Short guy, funny hat, named after a pastry?
