Despite what I've read from both "sides" in the comments; this is not anti-American; it's satire. Oliver has performed this same material to more uproarious applause in the United States. I'm sure some of my fellow Americans feel butt-hurt; but they needn't be. The Daily Show & Colbert satirize our news programming, Chappelle takes on the racial injustice & stigmas affecting our society, even Seinfeld (a show about nothing) pushed Gay Rights forward. Americans in general don't get any more butthurt when their country is criticized than citizens of any other country get butthurt when their country is criticized. In any country, there will always be a certain conservative part of the population that is defensive and sensitive and will easily take offense. I am sure that there are plenty of English people who would be butthurt if you criticized England about certain things in their presence. This show is not offensive at all to any reasonable American. I think it's very funny and I really like John Oliver.

Eh, its just pandering. There are a lot of people out there that look at success with anger and jealousy. America is the most powerful nation in the world with the largest economy in the world. John Oliver is smart, and knows how to capitalize on the lesser nations' jealousy. But what country did John Oliver move to?
@ZlatkoTheGod10 жыл бұрын
Eric S. Yeah i'm pretty sure Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Japan, New Zeeland, Australia you know, countries that work, are really damn jealous of you. Yup that must be it, it's totally that and not the imperialist nature of your politics or the complete immorality of your foreign policy that disgusts people over the world. Nope, they're obviously jealous.
@erics.489710 жыл бұрын
ZlatkoTheGod Well...a majority of those countries are allies in our "imperialism". And when I say "ally", I mean supporters who have organizations that are led, planned, funded and implemented by the US. Maybe you're stupid, and not as well-informed as you think...because if you were, you'd be agreeing with my obviously factual statement. Where does John Oliver live, again? I want to say the US, because that's where a majority of successful people are, but he wouldn't support that type of "imperialism"....right?
@ZlatkoTheGod10 жыл бұрын
Eric S. Correlation does not equal causation, in other words post hoc ergo propte hoc. In other other words, get over yourself, your country isn't the sole reason every other successful country in the world is successful. They are "allies" because anything other than that with a country that values its military more than its education system and on top of that got rich off of the world wars would be beyond stupid. That they're allies with you, doesn't mean that they like you. All of those countries I mentioned can be and have already been prosperous without you and will continue to be that without you, of course they will take a bit of damage in losing the US as a trade partner but then again, the US is not 90% of the world and China would more than gladly take your place anyways. BTW I love how you downplay the idea that US politics is a cesspool of idiocy and fascism based on the sole fact that the rest of the western world is in reluctant coalition with them (not that not wanting a war with a crazed superpower with 4000+ badly supervised nukes would have anything to do with Europe being the continent that was completely torn apart by the world wars instead of the one that took one blow and immediately forgot morality existed, and as a result of that doesn't want any more war, but hey I'm the uninformed idiot here so who am i to judge?) while your foreign policy includes making the god damn clear blue sky fucking terrifying to look at in some countries. And I also love the comic arrogance in that last sentence, really The Great and Powerful Trixie herself couldn't have said something more egocentric. And I'm not even commenting on the one where you literally say "you'd be agreeing with me if you weren't stupid. Classic.

“America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves.” - expressed by Lincoln in an 1838 speech in Springfield, Ill., without distorting the meaning or sense of the original. What does it mean? No one but ourselves can stop us. ;D

We host the world's biggest comedy festival and practically export comedians to the US and Europe. Yep, we can laugh, including at ourselves. Having a decent sense of humour is practically a stereotypical national trait (on both sides of linguistic divide). The weather's crap but the company's fun.

NB Davis enjoy what? Your country is a crime riddled shit hole and you don't even have a AAA rating anymore. You guys are on your way to being 3rd world except for the very rich... You guys are more commie than north korea. You have on average 41 mass shootings a month and now trump is running for President???? Hahaha! What a joke. Glad i live in Australia, the best and most safest country on earth voted 5 times.... a list the US didn't even make. Plus we now officially make better pizza than you, we've always made better alcohol but just to put the icing on the cake a whisky from Tasmania was voted the BEST on earth last year.

Unlike other countries like the UK, Australia, etc, the generalisation is that most Americans are too patriotic to appreciate humour that makes fun of their country, and I think that generalisation is rooted in a lot of truth. I don't think there would have been any place in the US willing to host a show like this considering the possible backlash, nor a station willing to televise it if there was.

There are good things and bad things about America. To progress we should bring to light things that are bullshit about POLITICS in America. I think John Oliver does a good job with his team looking into these things. Oliver says he loves USA. Educate yourselves as much as possible!

Thoughts from the first 4 minutes, Canada stole just as much land from the Native Americans as we did, and when the U.S. had 9% unemployment, Many European nations such as Spain and Greece had 25% unemployment, so still the best place to live.

Its easy to have 9% unemployment when you dont count half the unemployed.

pretty sure the employment rate is far from the only metric you can use to measure liveability. The best place to live is probably iceland, norway, or australia.

It gets more and more stale every time I say it, but I'm getting kinda tired of the Coward France meme. If you lost over 4% of your population in one war- a so-called "war to end all wars"- how eager would you be to throw your people at another death machine just twenty years later? And I remember hearing about this one guy who thought he could conquer the world... what was his name? Short guy, funny hat, named after a pastry?
@alanliu374810 жыл бұрын
He was 5 feet 7 inches; that's not that short for that time period.

It's beside the point, but yeah, that's what I hear. I've been to historic buildings like the missions in California and the doorways are consistently smaller.
