Americans in general don't get any more butthurt when their country is criticized than citizens of any other country get butthurt when their country is criticized. In any country, there will always be a certain conservative part of the population that is defensive and sensitive and will easily take offense. I am sure that there are plenty of English people who would be butthurt if you criticized England about certain things in their presence. This show is not offensive at all to any reasonable American. I think it's very funny and I really like John Oliver.

This is a comedy show--I think John Oliver has a pretty positive opinion of America in real life actually. I've seen him talk about it in an interview before, he does live here after all. The comedy sketch doesn't actually seem anti American either--sometimes comedy comes from good old fashioned self-deprecation and the exaggeration of stereotypes.

Unlike other countries like the UK, Australia, etc, the generalisation is that most Americans are too patriotic to appreciate humour that makes fun of their country, and I think that generalisation is rooted in a lot of truth. I don't think there would have been any place in the US willing to host a show like this considering the possible backlash, nor a station willing to televise it if there was.

Russia's a fragile authoritarian autocracy in the midst of a plummeting economy and rounds of sanctions. China's collapse isn't a question of if or when, but "how soon?" The EU is pretty much held together with duct tape and a dream. The Arab world is choosing between revolutionary chaos and horrific dictatorships. Australia is Australia. I think your EU opinion is a bit off. Where I live there is Healthcare for everyone, no one is poor and we have good regulations, etc. And last but least, the voting system is way better. The corruption in the US is so huge people don't even see it anymore, that combined with the strange voting system and the "white supremacy" makes me think... how the hell is this all possible... And the answer is on education and learning people what real freedom is.

John Oliver got his US green card in 2009, and became a British ex-pat. I like how foreign born comedians, journalists, etc can hate on America, but they fight tooth and nail for the right to call themselves an American citizen. I guess the idea of keeping most of the money you make, rather than having 20 - 60% of it taken away by the government is appealing to a lot of people :)
