When it came time to end it in 2013, The Office demanded an equally outsized finale. That finale was actually an epilogue, catching up with the characters a year after the premiere of the documentary that’s been filming them over the course of the series. As they discuss how their lives became a TV show, while offering the kind of fairy-tale endings we're used to seeing on television, The Office becomes a meta-commentary on itself-contemplating its larger purpose, and subtly urging us to think about how we might re-evaluate our own lives if we saw them reflected back to us on a TV screen. I don't like thinking of Erin as the new Pam. She was more of a completely different character. She was a good character who was introduced too late. She had a different storyline and a different attitude. She is in fact an Anti-Pam. Pam thought her job was boring, but Erin loved that job, seeing that same job as a promotion.

That was actually one of the main reasons why I loved Erin. She WAS a different character from Pam, not just a cheap remake. They took Pam’s sweetness and dialed it up to an eleven into a different character and I loved it.

I know this is late, but I agree with you. She had her own personality being sweet and having the same energy as Michael. Also, she actually loved and cared for her job and had a father-daughter relationship with Michael. She had a sad past being an orphan and got a lot of character development. I see her as her own character. And that's why I love her character.

The finale, for me, was by far the best finale of any show I’ve ever watched. When Steve left, it was different but I still loved the show. The finale.... I laughed, I cried, it was perfect. I love that now I’m sharing this show with 20 yr olds.

Hello Miss K Dawson. If I may, I would love to say that I share the opinion of yours. I don’t think we could have asked for a better finale. Because the finale is not just one episode. It is the climax of the growth of each and one of them over the years that have gone by. I might already have said it above in the comments but if I may, I’ll repeat it again. As far as the ending is concerned, I believe I disagree that ‘The Office’ should have come to closure with Steve Carell having left in season seven. Because I don’t think ‘The Office’ is just about Michael Scott. No. It is so much more …. The world of the office does not revolve around one individual. It is the Union. As the years went by, they used to hate one another. And it is only when the end arrives, we can see that each one of them has truly been united with the other. Now I am reminded of how Angela reaches for Oscar and grasps his hand. Realizing that all along he has always been there for her. And all she needed to do was merely to let go of her pride. She caves in and breaks in front of Oscar. Tears stream down both her cheeks as she realizes that it is a little too late for her to save their love with Dwight. And as far as it comes to Dwight, there is this fragment in the finale where he asks Jim for help. He realizes he needs help. He can’t do it himself. ‘Cause He is too weak. And right before Jim is about to get him made fun of, Dwight tells him that he is not joking. He truly needs his help. To me, this fragment is of a tremendous importance. Because it shows you that Dwight is not an idiot as he might be thought of. And I think the writers of the show had intentionally let Steve Carell leave The Office. For us to come to know that the place where we are does not only revolve around us. It’s true that the game is never ever going to be the same on the day when you leave it. But the future will unfold itself whether you are or not here.

There will never be a show like this ever again. By this, I mean that that even if you bring the exact cast and crew back right now, they still wouldn't be able to pull it off. The office was one of those shows created in a special moment in Television history. It didn't have tthe sazz of today, it had outgrown some of the standardized comedy of FRIENDS. It was shot in an unexpectedly ludicrous style, the casting sat perfectly together- not just in their chemistry with each other, but where they were in their careers. none of them were big stars; they were all just seriously talented people just eager to make the best of this one opportunity that had come their way. Even for the creators, schur and daniels, this was the beginning, which kickstarted one of the best known tv careers. So somehow, it all sat together in this melting pot where timing, history, peoples artistic career arcs, and the need for a show like this, broke through the screens for us. This show was touched by a divinity. Its hard to describe, but very few works of film get to capture the lightning in the bottle in this way. I mean, whatever said and done, nothing these actors ever do will ever top this. It doesn't matter if they win back-to-back oscars. This show was a moment of actualization- of pure perfection. Not just for them, but for everyone watching. It was an exhilarating artist-artistee relationship. Everyone, i say, everyone, who was involved with this grew out of it in a way that was life-altering in the most meaningful definition of the word. I'm talking mostly about us, the people who watched this show. I mean think about it, in the end, has there ever been a show like this? ever? ever? its deleted scenes alone could make up a show that is better than almost every show being put up out there today. its the show that is familial in the truest sense. its perfect. its perfect. i cant tell you what this show means to me. i could rewatch it a hundred times and still extract the same fulfillment from it, because theres so much to watch for , so much to tune yourself into, so much. and at the end of the day, you realize that this is the show which most closely resembles the lives we live. just goes to show how beautiful life can be, this show captured the lightning in a bottle when imitating life to art, and now we must draw from this bottle as much as we can, let the art percolate into life. this is what we need- a simple, sophisticated show which shows us how extraordinary our ordinary lives actually are. thank you, thank you god, thank you deborah and susannah and the creators of the office. thank you so much.

Its true man, the office even if they tried could never turn out as amazing as it did, if it was not for the people and where they were at that time. The guy who played Micahel I believed even told all of them once in the first season. "No matter what we do after this, be it going to space or anything. We will always be remembered for this." And yeah none of them were big stars, John was working in a restaurant and he and everyone else thought that the pilot was a one and done, and he woke up the next day and everything had changed. Even the writers of the show and creative directors were all people just trying to make their first project their best after every take they would come out of the room that was behind the door in the office ( behind the printer John said that was where the writing team was watching the cast doing takes) with so much energy, ideas, and love, and now as a director, he says he doesn't see that same energy. It really was the right time for everyone involved.

the thing that the office taught me is that i should start appreciating the normal things about life. It taught us, more than that, that having a normal life doesn't mean we're not special. seeing pam loving her simple life, erin thinking everything was amazing made me realize that these normal moments are the most special ones. that we should be thankful for some things but also be able to go for bigger dreams, like jim and andy. this whole series just fascinated me because basically most of the characters are comfortable with their lifes. and this is so admirable in a time we're always taught to want more, to never settle down for anything. its just the greatest show ever made.

Agree 100%. For me, it´s sometimes even difficult to see myself as "enough", because social media constantly makes me feel like I´m not, like I have to chase those huge dreams, have those great adventures. Like I´m nit supposed to be happy with just being average. And it is sometimes hard, even paibful, to accept yourself as just average, when basically every social media tells you that average sucks. Kaitln White it’s genuinely sad but at least Troy never did. He always treated him the same as everyone else and never underestimated Abed's talents and intelligence. However, Jeff always did. Jeff at the beginning saw him as just another inconvenience but when he got to know Abed's talents in films, he started to treat him better.

Ugh, I hate that trope. It's like the "Magical Negro" trope, but instead of a POC teaching the white protagonist a life lesson, the disabled person teaches the able-bodied person the valuable life lesson. It's an ablesit view, and it's condescending. Disabled persons don't exist just to teach you about appreciating your family, or optimism, or whatever else the movie wants to convey, and they have value as an individual just by being, not by what you can get from them.

I think The Office teaches us to ask better of ourselves even as we’re satisfied with what we have. It’s a very beautiful commentary on how real relationships, even though they hurt us and become deeply complicated as they move along, are worth fighting for. Honestly, this show changed so much inside of me. I think I saw bits of myself reflected, as everyone else did, I’m sure, in all characters somewhere or the other. Especially lately, I’ve been looking at how similar I am to Pam, and how I contribute to people’s lives around me. I’ve always had a struggle on the self-worth front, especially with romantic relationships, but Jim’s acceptance and appreciation towards Pam shows me that maybe it actually is possible that I have just not met someone who appreciates the (quite fulfilling but, when unrecognised, exhausting) emotional labour that goes into supporting and loving and comforting the people around us. And that we should try to trust our hearts and minds about important decisions, we’re not always gonna act immature and we’re not always gonna make bad decisions (even if we’re not currently in the place we expected ourselves to be five years ago). And with Jim, it shows me how relationships are built on trust and communication, and hasty decisions can sometimes really rock the foundation of those relationships. Also, specifically for men, Jim shows that vulnerability is a beautiful thing. That’s how you learn to trust yourself and others around you. It’s a cyclical thing- you become vulnerable, you get hurt BUT you come out of those painful situations knowing you can handle them, and then you’re ready to be vulnerable again. You’ll get hurt again, of course, and maybe deeper than the last time, maybe it’ll disable you for a while, but it’ll teach you something about yourself- and that lesson will always be with you in some way or another, even as you adapt it to the different situations you face in life. Okay I’m gonna stop otherwise I’m gonna write something for everyone I just have too many feelings for The Office 🥺

Many people say the office has a weak finale, but I don't think they got the true essence of the show. This video says everything I have ever thought. The office is much more than a sitcom for me, it is a massive part of my life. It has been and will be with me for every part of my life. It will be with me for the darkest parts of my life, it will be with me for the happiest parts of my life. I celebrate little things in my daily routine by watching the office, I cheer myself up by seeing this show when things go South. The Office is therapeutic for me. I watch a lot of different shows and sitcoms, but none of them feel like family. Despite watching the series finale for more than several times that I can count, I tear up every time Pam says "I wanted to scream at Pam for not being Happy for so many years,". I relate to Andy's line so much. Even Creed makes me cry. I am genuinely grateful that I will always have the office with me, no matter how awful my life gets.

I feel like the only people that say that are probably the ones who preach earlier seasons and cared too much about Michael Scott being in there or not, and whined too much about the introduction of new characters. The last two seasons felt a bit different without Steve Carell and we all loved him, that's for sure. And maybe some episodes were skippable. Personally though, I didn't skip any. Most people can generally agree that the finale was beautiful. The last three or four episodes of the show in particular, I find absolutely wonderful. And it's too bad for the people who shunned this show just because they kept being bitter over a character leaving, or because they didn't like where certain parts of some characters were going. I never even sat down to rank every season of it as some people do. I don't think I could nor would I want to. This show, with all it's ups and downs, is very well made, inspiring and touching overall, and as long as you're putting up any episode from The Office on TV, I probably am going to be happy regardless of what ep or season it is. It's mainly comedy, but it covers real aspects from different people's lives and is not afraid to put it's audience in an emotional rollercoaster. I'm actually on my first re-run of the show, this time with my parents. We're nearly reaching the end of season 9, and my folks are already getting sad knowing they're not gonna see anything new going on at Dunder Mifflin quite soon. I remind them they can always go back and rewatch the old stuff though. :) I'd say this show's finale is on about the same level as the Friends finale, if not actually way above it.

In a History of Theater class I took several years ago (so please fact check this) we talked about the different kinds of comedy throughout the years. The Office seems to encompass many of them. We laugh, we have some high brow jokes as well as plenty of dick jokes, and we have that happy ending that elicits a tearful smile. It's not a perfect show, but it encapsulates many different styles of comedy in an interesting and satisfying way.

I respected Pam for loving her boring life in Scranton. P&J really had everything a person could want, so much more than a lot of people, and he didn't appreciate that. He married the love of his life and had 2 healthy children. They both had a stable job. They weren't very rich, but how many people are?! The job wasn't super interesting but how many jobs are?! His coworkers were ok, boss wasn't too horrible, he had lots of laughs at work, parties... We can't have everything but he already had so much. Almost lost his family for being greedy.

When I saw this in my feed, I wanted to watch it right away. But I had to hold off until I finished my first thorough binge of the entire show. I've only watched the final episode today! It felt like a fitting way to wrap up my enjoyment of this series. This video is such an interesting take on the ending, and I liked how you touched on the meta-narrative aspects that was explored in the final season.

Ok, I have a little problem with Angela hiding the fact that Dwight is the father. She knowningly kept the real father away from birthdays, first words, first steps, early father and son bonding, so much! I don't know how she faked the tests when the doctor came out and told them both that Dwight isn't the father. But she went through alot of effort just for "pride". Dwight seems so happy to hear that Philip was indeed his son but I would of been pissed I missed so much of his young life, like wtf?

I think both Angela and Dwight have quite non-modern ideas of what makes life or a relationship successful. They care very little about human psyche, and, instead, are fond of traditions and "honorable" life style. So while to us, modern viewers, Angela's actions seem incomprehensible, they probably make a lot of sense to her - and even to Dwight. If Dwight could not understand Angela's motivations, I think he would be much more hateful towards her.

What's also great is how over time all of the characters know each other inside and out, willingly challenging them in gentle ways sometimes that get sort of passed over as casual conversation. You see how well they all know and care even when they don't want to. Sometimes even their shitty behavior stems from their frustration of seeing who the other is or could be but comes across as standard frustration in the office. It's quite the peeling onion.

I watched it for the first time last summer and what a fantastic show it was. I watched it again only a few months after. I'm on my third watch since listening to The Office Ladies Podcast. The chemistry between the cast and crew, I think, comes from the genuine friendships they have for each other in real life. Steve Carrell could have easily left that show earlier as his movie career was taking off, but he didn't. He also didn't let his sudden fame go to his head. He was content with others sharing the spotlight. And what wasn't said in this piece was how the producers let the actors have a creative hand in their storylines in the final season even down to the minor characters. Greg Daniels let the actors have an investment in their characters. Great show.

Jenna sitting on John's lap in the final scenes made me so sad as I can just see their minds thinking this is it after 9 years of being such an iconic love story and virtually joined at the hip every show. The journey they shared as well as the others is something they will have eternally!

USA Office gave me super unrealistic expectations of an office job. It's not like that, not even close, especially as people tend to change jobs often so you don't really have time to get to know them or be close to them (and no one has time outside of work). People are busy, have their own friends outside of work, and like to meet those friends, not office coworkers, and also, there are always people in office who bully someone. If you are bullied you know it's not funny. Ever.

I started watching this show when it first premiered. I got to follow these characters for 10 years. Even though I didn't care much for the new characters after Michael left and what they did to Andy, I still loved it and wanted to follow all the other characters. I bought the first season as a kid and downloaded it on my ipod to watch whenever I was scared at night and couldn't sleep. I have rewatched this show again and again and again and will forever. There will never be a show as meaningful as this to me.

And also to point out, to me i always thought that michael in season one thought that he had to look more presentable like a real boss to the cameras, this explain the weird haircut, the clothes but then we got used to and he showed the real him. the michael the we knew and love

I don't understand why Pam, other characters and some viewers say that the problem with the Philly job was she was not sure of Jim's love. She was taking all the work from raising the kids and she hit bottom when Jim discharge his own frustrations on her after he simultaneously lost a investor and miss his daughter recital. Pam was actually great and was the most healthy thing for her to stand her ground. I understood the spirit of the last episode, but it destroyed some good things. I would have preferred that maybe Jim quit in Scranton, but use the extra time to have a better home X work balance. Or that they found a good job for Pam in his new business, as she is not a great salesman but is super strong in other aspects that are vital to keep a office running.

I kind of wish shows like this were still being created because in my life so far I’ve not watched anything at it’s pilot and loved it as much as I instantly did when I first sat down and watched this on Netflix. It’s easy to try and watch the copycats like superstore but they are nowhere near as funny and to be able to watch these episodes weekly must’ve been great fun and for such a long time it’s like a lot of people had their adult lives accompanied by it. It’s just beautiful in that way.

one thing ignored in this (mostly excellent) video is how the writers went out of their way in the final season to make Jim and Pam negative characters, the villains, if you will, and Dwight the most positive character, the hero (and it's far beyond, as they mention, the season "exposing core problems in J & P's relationship"--it seems like a concerted effort to get us viewers to become as bored and annoyed with J & P as most of their co-workers are)
